Check the amount of water in your radiator.
Does the temperature gauge stay on 'cold' for ages, then apparently shoot up to show the engine nearly overheating?

Could possibly be the thermostat

is a rover 45 by the way :DYou should check water level urgently because if it is short of water the engine will overheat but, ironically the inside of the car gets cold because no water is going through the heater matrix. Make sure you put anti freeze in if it's short of water.

It is commonly.....although not always the thermostat!

it's a rover. My guess is the head gasket. have a look at your coolant and your oil, look for oil in the coolant and or water in the oil. It looks a bit like mayo or toffee sauce...

The thermostat doesn't affect the heater, it opens when the car warms up and allows the water to go through the radiator and not overheat. You can however check if it is that by feeling if the radiator is warm when the car has been running for a while.
yup- it was the water in the radiator (or lack of it!!) thanks stockmonkey!!
have topped it up and off to buy antifreeze at lunch :d

Some heater matrix need bleeding (like a central heating radiator) after you've topped the coolant up, to get rid of the air in the top of them. If it still feels quite cold after, give that a try.
