View Full Version : Keeping animals in council property

I've just been talking to one of our members on messenger, and it seems that a random council employee has instructed them to get rid of some of their pets

The tennancy agreement only restricts the number of dogs that can be kept, but apparently this person has too many other pets

Apparently vetbed is unsanitary (according to the expert council employee), and this person's children are at risk from the unsanitary conditions I've just described

Any comments anybody?

Depends on what pets they have. Has somebody reported them?

I didn't ask - they're indoor pets, so I don't know how anybody would have any complaint about them

Need more info if possible. Cant see how he can say that unless he has been sent for an inspection or was he like out to do a repair and refused do to the house condition.

I'd say this is only applicable if this person has about thirty cats doing their business all over the house.

Lets see if the person concerned wants to elaborate :)

Does it vary from council to council, or even from property to property?

Interesting. These are the pet rules:

Keeping animals

You must not keep any animal which we consider to be dangerous or which may cause a nuisance.

You must not keep a dog or a cat in a flat or maisonette which has shared parts of a shared entrance.

If you live in a small block of flats or maisonettes we will give you written permission to keep a dog or cat if all the tenants who use the same shared parts of the building have agreed to you keeping the dog or cat.

If we give our permission we may withdraw it if your pet causes nuisance or upset to any of your neighbours.

If we gave you written permission before 3rd April 1995 to keep a dog or cat
in a block of flats containing more than 12 homes you can continue to keep that dog or cat.

You must not keep any pigeons or doves in or on any part of the property, unless before 3rd April 1995 we gave you written permission to do so.

This is all it says about pets in the tenancy agreement rules on the sheffield homes website.

first, I don't know anything about the rented property vs animal issues but will find out asap as my friend lives in council property with his dog and must have been issued with rules.

Secondly, why is vetbed unsanitary - I'm confused... It's the easiest to clean and dries quickest, hence the use of it, it's used in vetinary hospitals - hence the name and surely can't be unsanitary otherwise it would cause infections...

Any dog bed is unsanitary, or any animal bed, in fact, if it's not cleaned regularly enough....

The issue was with the number and the fact they were in my kitchen diner. I told her to come back when she had legal instructions for me to down size or move them

Sorry but its a bit rude of them to judge too harshly with all the good work that goes on with bailey Im glad you gave them the proverbial birdie salute good on you.

Erm, just to put a different slant on this.

The cat abuse treatment society where the entire back garden has been turned into an indoor cattery is in a council house.

Not sure if Jackie bought it but she has loads of animals and thats never been a problem.

B_M - can you show them the pic you showed me of your 'unsanitary conditions'?

Someone I know was told she had to get rid of her second dog because she wasn't allowed more than the one dog and one cat living in a council property. Personally I think it had more to do with the second dog making lots of noise barking but she said they had put a limit to how many pets she was allowed. Reading fox20thC's post, I can't see this being the case.

I called an inspector out for a repair to my back door and he reported them to her

Absolutely ridiculous.

They'd need to serve you with some kind of order. And to do that they'd need to prove that the animals are detrimental to either the property or human health. Interfering busybodies!

Yep! I agree, at the end of the day it's you that lives there. Some people who don't have pets just see them as vermin and think it must all be unhygenic. If you had someone come round who kept pets nothing would have been said.
Hope it all gets sorted baileys_mum

How Stupid...

I agree with everything that has been said so far, there was nothing unsanitary about what I saw when we picked Ben up, I mean, for Pete's sake, what buisness is it of theirs anyway? You're not asking them to live with the pigs (though I don't know why they wouldn't want to;) :D )...Jess is right though when she says people who don't have pets don't understand:( interfering idiots, hope everything gets sorted soon :) can't see why it wouldn't though! Good Luck!
