View Full Version : Cat has had op but something's wrong
jediwarrior 20-11-2006, 20:18 My female kitten had an op to stop her having kittens and when she had her check up to see how things were goin vets said she had a infection and we was told to baith it and today when i took her back i told vets her side had got worse and the wound where stitches are had got a lump size of an egg. When vet checked it he said it is nothing to worry about but he thinks she may have a reaction to stitches or something else but nothing to worry about. He saidtake her back to vets tomorrow so he can re-operate and have a look at what is goin on but i am worried cos i had to have a cat put down 2 yrs ago because he caught a desise called FIP which got so bad it parlized him and it was hardest thing i had to do was have him put to sleep im just hopin rosie aint got it
Hi,
It could be any number of things - there are some really knowledgable cat people on here, such as Medusa, so I'm sure you'll get some answers here.
I doubt it's FIP - if it's flared up around the operation it could be an infection, a bleed under the skin, an allergic reaction - it may need treatment but I wouldn't worry just yet.
Many years ago one of my cats got bitten on the neck and the infection that came up was amazing - a large lump full of yuk which the vet drained, stitched and all was well.
Let's keep fingers and toes crossed, and I'm sure Rosie (nice name for a cat!!) will be fine. Keep us posted - you obviously care for her a great deal and taking her back to the vets is the best bet.
Good luck!
jediwarrior 20-11-2006, 20:43 will do vet said dont worry he operating first thing. she dont seem to be in pain cos she`s playin wi my staffy called tia he only yelps if you catch or toutch it
kittenta 20-11-2006, 21:34 My cat had fip. The vet told us that most cats with fip are undianosed until they start having liver/kidney problems and such, he didn't mention anything about lumps etc? I know it is worrying but it is likey to just be an infection or something. I hope all is ok
OK- to answer your first point. The swelling in the spay scar is a relatively common event- we see it a number of times a year in even young healthy cats at the Shelter (and a lump the size of an egg is common when this happens).
It seems to be related to either an allergic reaction to something used during the operation (stitching material, cleaning solutions etc) or an infection or build up of fluid in between the layers of the incision that the vet made during the operation.
As far as I recall, every case we have had has been treated with bathing, antibiotics, time and/or a little procedure to reopen some of the incision to release any built up fluid in the wound.
We haven't lost any cats through this in my memory (and that amounts to several thousand cats)- and it's not related to FIP in any way. Please be reassured about this- she will sense your worry and there's no good side to making her feel that.
jediwarrior 20-11-2006, 22:54 thats good i dont have to worry i was really sad when my cat had to be put down and i thort not again i`ll let u know t morrow how she gets on
bluesandtwos 21-11-2006, 12:05 hope it goes well for your cat. sounds like its either a reaction or bit of infection. Both fairly common post-op things and both easy to sort out. so wouldnt worry too much.
jediwarrior 21-11-2006, 22:31 vet said she had a reaction to her previous stitches so he changed then and gave us some anti biotics to give her hopefully all will be well now
kittenta 21-11-2006, 22:43 aww that's great news, hopes she's back to herself real soon
jediwarrior 21-11-2006, 23:12 she more or less back t normal she is runnin about and attackin the dog as per usuall
jediwarrior 25-11-2006, 00:23 the cats had her check up and still has infection but vets said she will be fine after antibiotics one thing i know for cert is that she is dafter now than before
I'm really glad to hear that it's getting sorted out and that she'll be back to being a snuggly girl as soon as possible.

Great news!
May she continue to get better and become a nuisance around the house! :)
I'm so pleased to hear that everything has now resolved for Rosie- the next step for you is to find out what the stitches that she had a reaction to were made of, so that if you ever need to see another vet you can tell them what not to use.
jediwarrior 03-12-2006, 19:01 will do vet put black ones in but i`ll ask wot stitchs he used
