View Full Version : Time for a meet? (November)
Strix 20-11-2006, 01:47 PM It has been suggested within another thread that it may well be time we had another non-walking meet (well, unless you count the stroll to the bar :hihi: )
How about next week? What night suits people best? Any preference for a venue? (my suggestion would be anywhere that allows the shortest and most legged walking group members to attend too ;) )
poll added. select all answers that suit you! and it should display who you are and what your choices were
Edit: Time and venue now set:
Cask & Cutler, 8pm Thursday 30th November.
purdyamos 20-11-2006, 05:25 PM I'm busy on the evenings of the 29th and the 1st (that's wednesday and friday). All other days I'm free for beer drinking purposes.
feargal 20-11-2006, 05:36 PM Like PurdyAmos, I am generally available for beer drinking... although to my shame I seem to be doing more of the drinking than the walking at the mo
Happy Birthday Strix by the way!
Strix 20-11-2006, 11:27 PM Well as long as it doesn't clash with the woodseats meet, which I think is the 8th, and the following week....
(thanks Feargal :) )

I'm up for this, anytime, anywhere's fine by me.
belated happy birthday Strix. :partyhat:
Strix 21-11-2006, 02:07 PM Thanks Tricky :)
I'm experimenting with a poll, if you'd like to vote in it. click all that apply

Strix 21-11-2006, 02:26 PM you didn't vote on the poll Sooz :P
sooz22 21-11-2006, 02:28 PM Thought it might be a bit cheeky seen as I only visit this forum to spy on you guys....

Come and see me!!!!!!!!!!!!
Strix 21-11-2006, 02:29 PM Pft, get one of those buns on a lead and get yersen out with us :P
sooz22 21-11-2006, 02:31 PM Hmmmm I dont know how well Marley wold socialise with lots of dogs. He might get a bit... frisky... with them!
tess667 21-11-2006, 02:49 PM It would have to be a Friday for us but I'm happy to go with the Cask and Cutler
BlankFrack 21-11-2006, 06:36 PM If you can make it a Thursday or Friday near Walkley then there's the slenderest sliver of a chance that I might be able to render myself rather less mysterious and lurker-esque.
Now, wouldn't that be lovely for everyone?! :D
I might even join in with a spot of walking one of these days.
purdyamos 21-11-2006, 08:57 PM Why have you picked pubs out in the middle of nowhere? How do you think people are going to get to them? I think we should go to a city centre pub that everyone will be able to get to. Choosing pubs out in obscure suburbs is putting dogs above people. I think that is wrong.
tess667 21-11-2006, 09:05 PM With respect Purdy, the Cask and Cutler is only a couple of minutes walk from Shalesmoor tramstop so shouldn't be a problem for most people, classic though isn't it, ya can't please em all!
ItIsNow! 21-11-2006, 09:09 PM Where is the Woodseats meet? I've never been to one of these get-togethers and I'd quite like to go to one.
purdyamos 21-11-2006, 09:57 PM With respect Purdy, the Cask and Cutler is only a couple of minutes walk from Shalesmoor tramstop so shouldn't be a problem for most people, classic though isn't it, ya can't please em all!
The Cask is the one I voted for due to it being nearer the centre. And with respect tramstops are meaningless if you live nowhere near a tramstop at the other end - which is 'most people'.
I'm talking about the others - they are too far flung. (the fat cat is not far from the Cask but i do not want to walk through those streets alone after dark).
My preference would be the Red Lion in the city centre. We had one meet there and it was great.
fuzzy 21-11-2006, 10:07 PM Can we come?? I know we haven't been on a walk yet but i keep looking at when they are.
Has a decision been made on where and when this is yet??
altus 21-11-2006, 10:30 PM I have to agree with Purdy. Just about everyone can get to the city centre on one bus or tram, the same cannot be said of Shalesmoor and getting multiple buses home after the pub is a pain. They are infrequent enough at that time of night - trying to catch two is almost impossible. Whilst it's not far to walk to the city centre from Shalesmoor, the streets round there are not safe at that time of night - particularly if you've been boozing.
To put it into a bit of perspective, if you take the town hall as the centre of the city, Shalesmoor is roughly the same distance away from the centre as the bottom of Ecclesall Road. A walk to the city centre after leaving a pub from the latter would be considerably safer.
I vote for the Red Lion, or somewhere else in the city centre, even if they are not on the list. Any day will do.
tess667 21-11-2006, 10:53 PM Fair enough, not everybody lives near a tram stop but some people may not even have easy access to a bus route, whatever is arranged is always going to be impracticle for some people. I'd hardly class the Cask and Cutler in the middle of nowhere
Strix 21-11-2006, 11:05 PM I wasn't at the red lion meet, so am not familiar with the place
If it had been suggested before I added the poll in I would have been able to add it in
The out-of town pubs were added as I was under the impression that most of the walking group were also appreciative of a good pint
Funny how there have been more contributions to this thread now it's turned into a grumble

There are pubs in town that serve a decent pint and I would be fully in favour of choosing one of them. :)
I'm not that bothered about exactly where we go as long as it's not too awkward to get home from. The easier it is for most people to get to/from the more people are likely to turn up.

If you think this is bad, ask Purdy, etc. about arranging a walk. :hihi:
Strix 21-11-2006, 11:22 PM Yes, well
Would somebody please suggest some suitable pubs in town, as us Strixes never drink there, so unless everybody fancies the Casbar or the Nelson, I'm not making any suggestions :P
and just one other tiny little thing......
I have given up trying to extract enough information from SYPTE about where to catch woodhouse buses from to actually be able to get home on one too - so don't talk to me about non-train public transport :suspect:
scoobz 22-11-2006, 08:22 AM What about Queens Head at Pond Street, you cant get more central than that, some nice cubby holes too suitable for groups! Having said that, dunno if I can make it, got a few things happening in the next week or two, so it depends what night is chosen. May advice tho` is to get on with it!
Tricky 22-11-2006, 03:53 PM Can we come?? I know we haven't been on a walk yet but i keep looking at when they are.

Course you can. Judging from the great 'Where is this?' game thread, I would have thought this group was right up your street.
feargal 22-11-2006, 03:56 PM I'm favouring a city centre pub - even though the Cask is near. It's fairer to everyone. :o Blimey! Hark at me being considerate for a change!
No real preference for days, so I'm only sticking me oar in a little bit. ;)
altus 23-11-2006, 04:11 PM and just one other tiny little thing......

I was chatting to a friend who lives in Woodhouse last night and she said you can get them from the bus station and on Arundel Gate. This site (http://www.yorkshiretravel.net/default.jsp) has a good timetable enquiry/journey planner.
Strix 23-11-2006, 04:18 PM the problem is that loads of buses go to woodhouse, so when I asked at the travel centre (and I've tried this 3 times now) they always demand to know which part of woodhouse. I'd be happy to walk to my house from any bus stop, but that isn't good enough for them, I'm only allowed one bus.
I've scoured the racks in the travel centre as best I could, but they are arranged in bus number, not destination, which is small print really. I tried the online service for catching a bus home, but stand A5 (or whatever) tells me absolutely nothing about where the blasted thing is
If you're not from Sheffield, you're not entitled to catch buses
We'll take the car or train to the meet
purdyamos 26-11-2006, 10:31 PM Well it looks like Thursday at the Cask and Cutler is the democratic choice. Is everyone up for this? We have LOTS to talk about!

Yep, I`ll be there! Incidentally, as an out-of-towner, where`s the Cask and Cutler?

Right on the Shalesmoor junction, where the tram turns 90 degrees from Hanover Way towards Infirmary Road

you mean that pub on the right next to Albert Jacksons that I pass on my way home from work every night? duh!
cheers for that! see you there
feargal 27-11-2006, 12:27 PM No Scubz, that the Ship Inn. It's across the way, nearer to Tesco - the grotty looking pub, painted pink. Nice inside though! There's parking on the side streets, for those who need it.
Meaks 27-11-2006, 06:17 PM Nice inside though!
Have they redecorated recently or something..? ;)
feargal 27-11-2006, 08:55 PM I was thinking along the lines of the inside of the pint glass!
fuzzy 27-11-2006, 11:06 PM So the Cask and Culter this Thursday night??.
What time??
Strix 27-11-2006, 11:24 PM I may not be able to make it, so have a good one guys
(funeral in the north-west :( )
Godzilla 28-11-2006, 01:07 AM Please suggest a time. I'm going to try and call in for an hour.
feargal 28-11-2006, 09:17 AM Lets make it 8.00 pm
Strix 28-11-2006, 03:59 PM Are we at a point where I can edit the first post with details then? :)
Tricky 28-11-2006, 04:17 PM Are we at a point where I can edit the first post with details then? :)
Maybe we should have another poll?
1. We are at a point where Strix can edit the first post with details.
2. No we are not, it's only been a week and I need more time.
3. I don't care, I'm not going anyway.
feargal 28-11-2006, 04:25 PM I thought it was all set? Cask & Cutler, 8pm Thursday 30th November.
There's nowt like making things harder than they need to be!
Strix 29-11-2006, 09:36 PM First post now edited with the updated info
purdyamos 29-11-2006, 10:16 PM I might be a bit later than 8, if I manage to cram in a trip to Heeley Pool at tea time. :)
BlankFrack 30-11-2006, 02:06 PM As long as there are no pile-ups on the M1 tonight I'm going to try and make it along and say hi.
Look out for the Frank Black lookeylikey who clearly doesn't know anybody and give him a big hug (or just buy him a beer) :)
feargal 30-11-2006, 02:50 PM Any particular era of Frank? I know he doesn't have a rapid image change, but still... ;)

Only if you sing Motorway to Roswell first. :hihi:

The pic at the top of this page shows the great man looking unnervingly like me if I've been especially slovenly in the shaving department...
Is it Frank or is it Blank? (http://independentartistscompany.com/artist.aspx?ID=16374)
Godzilla 30-11-2006, 06:44 PM I plan to nip down for an hour just to say 'hello' and then will have to get back home to feed Mr Godzilla. Might just bring Sarah Greyhound with me. See you all later.
Tricky 30-11-2006, 11:59 PM Sorry I couldn't make it, I've caught this bug that's going round. See you all next time.
purdyamos 01-12-2006, 12:59 AM Sorry I couldn't make it, I've caught this bug that's going round. See you all next time.
That's a pity, Tricky. Was looking forward to seeing you again. Hope you are well soon.
It was a very nice evening. Hello to new faces Fuzzy, Mr 'Alan' Fuzzy, and also to not-so-newbie Blank Frack, who it turns out I knew ten years ago! Yay! We've sorted out some more substance around the 'hideous sadistic death and torment stroll' on Sunday - see separate thread.
We must do this again soon - it's my birthday in three weeks - subtle, delicately fragranced hint! :D
fuzzy 01-12-2006, 01:03 AM That would be Nomme. Where did you get Alan from???
Was good to meet you all and hopefully we will see you out on a walk soon.

I don't know. Where did I get Alan from? I'm so sorry - I don't think he offered a real name.
Godzilla 01-12-2006, 09:50 AM It was good to catch up with everyone, albeit briefly. Sarah enjoyed her evening out. I owe you a roll of sellotape Purdy!
feargal 01-12-2006, 10:05 AM It was nice to see everyone again (and some new 'uns)! One of these days I'll go on another actual walk, instead of just thinking about it
nomme 01-12-2006, 11:44 AM I don't know. Where did I get Alan from? I'm so sorry - I don't think he offered a real name.
Didn't I? Oh it gets a bit complicated with people having 2 names. It's bad enough for me just remembering 1! Anyway, if helps you can 'call me Al'.
Nice to meet everyone last night and I hope to see you soon on a walk!
cheers
Nomme
BlankFrack 01-12-2006, 11:46 AM Hurrah! What a splendid night.
It was marvellous to meet you all - especially Sarah!
I can't believe a walkers pub do was arranged when I was on holiday - Scandalous (Taxman)

Is there something you're not telling us, Mr Frack? :hihi:

I seem to have developed the uncanny ability to channel the spirit of our dear departed Taxman! I'm like a less specious version of Derek Acorah.
I have absolutely no idea how i do it either
