Thought I'd put these two questions in one post.

Cats and Sprats - I was told that cats like these so I bought some. They are whole, raw (dead) and looking at me :gag: Are these really good for them and should they have them raw, boiled, fried or does it not matter?

Dogs and Vegetable water - I saw on the internet that when you steam vegetables the water etc you are left with is good for the dog? I tried mine with some yesterday and she lapped the lot up! But, I don't want to make a habit of it if it isn't that good for her. Any ideas?

Thanks

Both good suggestions. There are a lot of vitamins lost in vegetable water, which is why nutritionally it is better for us to steam them! Beware though - it might cause trumping :P

Sprats are an excellent idea, raw and as fresh as possible is the way to go. Try cutting them up into several pieces to begin with though so the cats realise they are there to eat. Manufactured pet food fed animals often don't know what to do with fresh when it is placed in front of them!

they have always had fresh fish but i've never tried these. one of them had the tray out of the shopping bag before i'd fetched all the shopping in so i think they'll know what to do with it  I just didn't know if i should cook it first.

We give veg water to the dogs (and veg too for that matter), also, fruit juice out of tinned fruit etc. Its all good!. fish and meat can be fed raw as thats how the animal would eat it as a wild animal. Yeh!, cats/lions, dogs/wolves thing, but you see what I mean.

All those wee fish like sprats and pilchards do great stuff for their coats!

Isn't that coz of the oil though?

We give Brude the leftover olive or sunflower oil if we've been frying chicken or eggs, and many judges have commented on the quality of his coat

Isn't that coz of the oil though?Yes, very probably - give them fish oil supplements and no doubt you'd see the same results.

ooooh, that's so obvious and yet I never thought of it...

fish like sprats and pilchards are great because of the levels of omega 3 in them, but beware, they contain high levels of protein so don't feed too much unless you want a mad, restless animal...

as for the fruit juice for tinned fruit... not sure I can pass it up to feed the dogs - I ALWAYS get the fruit juice...

well i put one single sprat in the cat cupboard, six cats have been in and the sprat is still there:hihi: They can be fussy buggers eh! :D I used to find that if the fish was anything like a few hours 'not fresh' they'd turn their noses up at it.. and that included from the fish counter i.e. if its been in the fridge in the supermarket for more than a day!
If you don't mind the disgustingness, try chopping a new one up a wee bit - as an entire fish its a bit different for them to a nice piece of fillet :P

or put it on a poly tray, cover it with clingfilm and sit it on the worktop. they are gauranteed to steal it then :hihi:
