They're remaking everything, and then they'll remake the remakes.

It appears that John Carpenter has optioned all his property for remakes. We have already had The Fog (which was worse than the original - if that was possible), and The Thing and Halloween are in the pipeline. Rumours circulated about a rehash of Escape from New York too.

They first toyed with remaking TheThing as a 2 part (4 hour) mini series, but it seems are now set for the big screen. To be honest, the pedigree behind the proposed remake, and the words "companion piece" in the article actually make me kind of hopeful that a good 'semi-sequel' may be the order of the day. So long as they avoid washing it all over with CGI gloss, and try to keep the majority of the effects 'real', then it could turn out right.

Fingers crossed eh?

Well...this will be a remake of a remake already....and some films have already gone past the 5 remakes marker (The Four Feathers being a prime example)

To be fair, recently some remakes have been quite good, I thought Dawn of the Dead was mint, as were The Ring and House on Haunted Hill. However, some have been pants, like texas chainsaw massacre. Could go either way I guess! Anyone else got any remakes they love/loath?

As long as they dont change the music i'll watch it, John Carpenters music for his films is so unnerving its unbelievable.
I'll tell you something though it will never do as well, you cannot remake john carpenters films, The Fog remake was a disaster and they got everything wrong.
They wont be able to replace Kurt Russell because he was brilliant, basically i reckon its going to be a big pile of poo.

Yeah why bother? The 'original' (as in Carpenter's version) is perfect - another sign that Hollywood is disappearing even further up it's own rectum.

I doubt this remake will be anywhere near as gory as the last one, this one will probably be a 12 rating (to maximise audiences) and so totaly crap.

I though The Fog remake was pretty good.

It was totally off the plot, it had nothing like the original fog in it it was boring and stupid and the only good thing was that the guy in it was hot...thats it.

Have you seen the remake of The Amyityville Horror, Ryan Reynolds, now that is a hot bod.

(can't remember what the film was like)

america has finally run out of european films to remake, la cage aux folles to name just one so now its remaking its own films usually badly. Psycho was better in black and white IMO and the all time worst remake of any film, Barbwire, they couldn't have done worse if they'd burnt the original copy of Casablanca on Bogart's grave then urinated on it

The original The Fog was a classic, a superbly done atmospheric ghost story, the remake was a total insult!

Apparentely Halloween is being remade by Rob Zombie, the gentleman behind The Devils Rejects and House of a 1000 Corpses.........The mind boggles! Should be interesting if nothing else!

Don't know what to think about The Thing remake, could be a good companion to the original, could easily be another insult!

Sheff dan the remake was a complete insult, i was brought up on John carpenters films and they have frightened the life out of me even at my age now. In the fog they got rid of the scary movie and added a whole load of new stuff and left a whole load of old stuff out...Whats the point. There going to do the same to The Ghost as well and every other John Carpenter film...its pants.

But you have to change something in a remake, or whats the point of it, making exactly the same film again is a waste of time.

 What exactly is you point? I agree the remake of The Fog was pants! Read my post again please.

I was also brought up on Carpenter films and was scared to death and amazed by them as a lad.

I think some remakes can work though, if they are done in the right way, for example Dawn Of The Dead, that film had a fresh and original approach to it that worked.............well i thought so.

After all these years of rumour it turns out there is going to be a prequel, and the release date has been set for 29th April 2010.

It's something to consider that many of the younger generation won't watch any movie of a certain age. I hear this a lot lately, so for some, who have never seen A Nightmare On Elm Street, or The Thing (and would NEVER consider watching the original) this is a good idea.

But for the rest of us who don't have the attention span of ... sorry, what was I saying...?

Oh yes. For the rest of us, it's a pain to think of our beloved movies being remade and potentially ruined in this way.

It's a prequel Karis, not a remake. It's going to explain what happened in the Norwegian camp.

Having said that, after discovering the "thing", rather than have it arrive by helicopter, you could argue that it's going to be pretty similar. Also, at this time it seems like they are simply running with the title The Thing.

But even having said that, the 1982 film was a remake anyway.

Since John Carpenter's film is one of my favourites, I will try and remain optimistic for now. It's difficult because I find modern, CGI laden films very boring indeed. However, the following interview with screenwriter Eric Heisserer in io9 is slightly encouraging:

What Sick John Carpenter Moments Will The Thing Prequel Explain? (http://io9.com/5524998/what-sick-john-carpenter-moments-will-the-thing-prequel-explain)

Heya Q. I didn't know it was a prequel. I was just following on from what was said in this post. :)

But I'm open to sequels / prequels and remakes. I've had my strop about them and now I just accept them with dignity and aplomb.

It's that or rant about them until I'm old and The Lord of the Rings has been remade three more times.

I agree; it's just a sign of the times.

I've heard kids saying "There's no way I'd watch that dinosaur, I'll wait for the remake"
