... after a year?

Anyone have any experience of this? It's a faulty electrical item worth over £100. No damage caused by me, it's just developed a fault.

Was bought Dec last year, have the receipt.

What are people's experiences of Argos when returning things after (in this case well after) the 16 day money back guarantee?

Cheers.

had no problems in the past, usually we take the 3 year guarentee/insurance thing they offer;)

There should be info on the receipts. A lot of products need to go back to the manufacturer after a certain amount of time, rather than Argos.

Sorry - i've no specific *experience*, but just thought i'd advise you as i could :)

Apparently Argos are absolute n*bs about taking stuff back. My mate bought a video camera it developed a defect within a week he tried to return it with the receipt and they refused to take it back then had to argue with them for a while and they offered him store credit, so he saw the manager and argued with them and eventually they gave him a refund. :|

never wrong - I hope your comment is backed up by your name :-)

Will they tell me immediately when I take it back whether they will replace it or arrange repair?

Thanks for other comments too...

Let us know how you get on. I bought a digital camera last January and the flash wont charge up now so I'm taking it back.

From my past experience they are very good at returns. I bought an in car dvd player, picked it up from the counter, saw a different model on offer on the shelves behind. I went straight to the customer service desk and swapped the new one for the one on offer, never even left the shop!

Well, we shall see. Just don't want to go weeks waiting for repair etc - especially if Argos find it as hard to contact Philips as I am doing!

All will be revealed ... tomorrow. Will report back.

Thanks again.

Gone for repair - as expected.

Anyone have any experience of the repair turnaround?

possible four or five days it depends on wether they replace or repair if it,s not economic to repair they will just send you a new one and it may be the newer model if they have stopped making the one you have sent back

Argos are very good with returns. I returned an iron which was one month out of guarantee, I had bought it 13 months earlier. The 12 month guarantee is very misleading as the law states that an item should last for a reasonable amount of time. The law does not actually give a time limit, and the manufacturer's guarantee is just a guideline. So, if you buy an iron for £10, you might reasonably expect it to last for a year or two. Because I had bought a £60 iron, I pointed out to the store manager that I felt that 13 months was not a reasonable amount of time for an expensive iron to last, he agreed and informed me that, because I had had 13 months use from it, he could deduct an amount from any refund/exchange (which is fair enough) but he gave me a credit note for the full amount. Yay!!! Always stand your ground, be nice, and you should find that most shops will be fair. Good luck!

I guess they will have to send to Philips to dertermine whether or not it's an economical repair or not ... I can see it taking some time longer than 4-5 days but I may be pleasently surprised.

The model I returned has indeed been replaced by a newer one.

Will post results when they let me know the outcome. Apparently they are going to ring me.

I've found them to be pretty good in the past.

I once bought a TV unit from the Angel Street Argos which had two black glass shelves. When I opened up the box, one of them had completely shattered. I went back the following day at lunchtime to ask about a replacement. She said that I didn't have to return the whole thing or even the broken shelf, but they would give me a replacement shelf if I returned at the end of the day. I did and they gave it to me with no problems.

More recently I ordered a corner group sofa only for the delivery men to discover that it was too big to fit through the door (I should have checked that first). I asked them to take it back, rang up Argos Direct, cancelled the order and they refunded the cost back to my card within four or five days.

returned an iron 11 weeks after buying it as it simply died. They replaced it for me in the mega store in town. Only word of warning I have with argos with returns, is that if you are buying something, get it home and check that you are confident it isn't a return. I have bought numerous items, not just electrical things and it was obvious that somone else has had them.

Examples

sleeping bag - had grass in the velcro (bit of a give away)
food processer - no plastic cover on the plug which tends to be there when it comes from the manufactor, a couple of items were not in bags and odd marks on the main part of the processer - hence to say I returned it and went to Currys and bought one.

Remote control car - the sticky tape was doubled up, when I checked it out the bottom layer had been lifted off the box, then the car had a blade of grass in the wheel when we opened it.

mmmmm

I've always found argos good at taking things back. I once bought a £20 buggy. Days under the 12 month dead line it broke in the middle of town. With my young daughter still in it I went straight to Argos without the reciept & asked for a replacement. I have studied law for 2 years & had to spout a bit about the sale of goods act but I walked out with my daughter in a brand new buggy that lasted long enough for her, till she was walking confidently.

I would also like to state as far as them blaming the manufacturer, it may be the manufacturers fault but your agreement is with the people you buy it from "ARGOS". It's then up to them to sort it out with the manufacturer, & that is the case with any sale.

OK, yes there is more to to it. They said it is liquid damaged but as it's been in the TV cabinet with all the other stuff which is all working fine I find this hard to believe!

It's currently in the kitchen as I can't be bothered yet to take it apart to check for myself.

I am VERY careful with my stuff and would be more than a little surprised if indeed it IS water damaged.

Regarding my earlier post on this thread, took my camera back to Argos for repair and was told there is no repair option on this brand (Vivitar). So, I was told I could have a new camera or my money back, opted for the camera.

The member of staff returned to tell me they don't stock that model and she would have to refund my money on a gift card, £64.99, fine by me.

Had a quick look in catalogue on way out and happened to do a stock check on a Fuji Finepix A500, catalogue price was £99.99, stock checker price was £69.99 because it was display model. I asked staff about it and was told the display models don't get handled at all, So I bought it, left the shop with a much better camera that only cost me £5 more!

Well, you have the one year manufacturers warranty, beyond that there EU law.

Under EU law, all electronic devices must last a certain amount of time, if they break under normal use in that time it is the retailer (not the manufacturer) who must repair or replace the item within 6 weeks. The length of time varies from item to item, but for TV's (for example) it's 6 years.

Most retailers rely on the punter not knowing the law or their rights.
