Ok so I'm not the sharpest knife in the techie drawer.

WHat sort of email account can I operate through outlook. Obviously hotmail does not want to play!

I NEED MY CALENDAR....ggrrrrrrr

and If I change my email address can I set something up to forward email from my hotmail?????

One last moan:

it really bugs me that I can't fax with broadband !!

You have a few different questions here :)

To use hotmail in Outlook you need POP3 access to it. I'm not sure if hotmail still provides that (they used to). Look in your options on your account but I suspect they have withdrawn that service.

Next, forwarding hotmail. Again check in your user preferences. You used to be able to.

Finally faxing from broadband. You must still have a 56k modem in your computer? You don't need an ISP account to fax,, just plug the modem into the phone line and fax as you did when you had dial-up...it's not any different.

Looks like you can still forward all email.

Go to the Options page.

On the left side of the page, click Mail, and then click Mail Forwarding.

Enter the e-mail address and password for the account containing the e-mail you wish to forward to your personal domain account.

Note

You can only forward e-mail from one @hotmail.com or @msn.com account at one time.

Reading hotmail account in outlook is possible.

When I get time and no one else has answered in the meantime I'll post some info on it.

I'm out for the rest of the day now..

yup can forward but doesn't seem to be a way to use outlook.

As for plugging in the modem, hmmmm, I don't have one. I've had broadband for as long as I can remember.

Are you sure you don't have a modem? I've had broadband for 6 yrs but they still make computers with modems. Every laptop has one built-in and almost every desktop I've ever seen.

If you are intent on faxing over broadband there are a few companies...I haven't used any of them but you can check them out...

efax.co.uk
fax.co.uk
fax.tiscali.co.uk

Again the easiest is to check if you have a modem on your computer and buy the modem cable for £3 .

Ive had broadband for 6+ years now, and I dont have a modem. Havent had one for as long as I remember. I build my own machines, and only put in them the stuff that I need.

I was just presuming from this...
Ok so I'm not the sharpest knife in the techie drawer.

that she wasn't building her own computers. Maybe you would know better than I, don't most Dixons type computers have modems included?

I just thought that would be the easiest way for her to fax. Have you used any of these email -> fax programs slh73?

Most shop bought systems do include a modem as standard. But then again, just because bonny says she not the most techie, doesnt mean she doesnt know someone who is who put a machine together for her. I know Ive built them for a fair few people whove realised that they can get a better machine for less money buy letting me build it rather than going to dixons/pcworld and paying over the odds for a packard bell or compaq or whatever it is they sell now. As for sending faxs over b/band, Ive never tried it. If I need to send a fax I can do it from work. Might be something I ought to look into though..

Ok, I thought that I didn't have a modem but if what you say is true then I must have one. How do i find out?

I have the cable modem (broadband) I know that much. I have fax wizard on my pc but as I do not dial up I cannot send faxes as there is no dial tone.

I do not have a telephone line near my PC at all just the cable connection.

Heya Bonny...

Ok it is possible to send faxes over the net using one of a myriad of commerical services to handle this for you but to be honest the cost is pretty prohibitive.. Unless of course you intend to send lots of faxes to the USA and Aus :)

You'd be better off investing in a modem and a phone extension cord and getting yourself setup to send them yourself...

Yeah I looked into that option but to be honest I don't want to pay each time I send a fax when I know my PC will do it (apart from the broadband thing).

So should I have a different modem other than the one I have (cable) built into my PC and if so how do i find that out?

My primary concern at the moment is running hotmail through outlook. Again I do not want to pay a 3rd party to enable this if there is a way I can do it myself.

Already looked into pop3hot etc etc.

Ah ha ...

It seems that my version of outlook (2000) is too old !

If you have outlook 2003 you can run hotmail through it but only if you subscribe to the premium hotmail account.

Bummer.

Actually the hotmail account premium isn't required as far as I can tell...

You do however need the plugin to handle HTTP accounts...

In all honesty, if you're desperate for an email account that allows you to use both a web based email system AND outlook then I can help for a darned sight less than hotmail are asking for :)

Help me please!

I just want to have my email in outlook as my default. Trouble is I only have outlook 2000.

How can you help me?

I don't mind getting a new email account just so long as I can use it.

Which accounts does outlook support?

Just found a very cheap but not so cheerful way around it.

Made hotmail a folder in outlook............hmmmm

:(

set up an account in outlook and put this in...

POP3: pop3hot.com
SMTP: mx01.hotmail.com

if you need more detailed instructions, then ask away.

arrrrrahggggg.... its downloading all the junk from my hotmail into my outlook express when I checked to see if it works.

Wow didn't know you could do that John :)

Bonny - If it's a desktop pc you have then take a look on the back of the tower where all the cords run into the computer. Look around for a square shaped port that the modem cord could plug into, it is slightly squarer (less wide) than the one your cable modem network cable plugs into. It looks like where your phone cord plugs into your phone handset...not the wall plug. There should be two of these ports side by side (one for your modem line in and the other for phone line out). They will probably be in the bottom half of the back. There's usually a faint symbol above/beside showing a phone handset.

Thanks John!

It's there now. Just having a problem importing my contacts now and sending mail. It receives fine but sent items are staying in my outbox.

I can confirm that sending it via hotmail pop3 is a problem.

It is not possible using outlook express 2000 like you want it.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;234704

It is possible to allow outlook 5 to be configured to read and send via HTTP but I cannot verify since my version is latest.

read warning on regedit when visiting the site below before attempting it.

Go to this site for instructions to allow you to have HTTP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=241841

Then go to this site for instructions on setting the HTTP configuration:

Although you'd be VERY much disuaded from installing that version of Outlook Express because it will be chock full of exploits...
