I have an old medal that has "The Sheffield and District Rifle Association" written on it. On the back it has "full range 1912" stamped in. Must be from the Totley range. If the range is still there would they still have any records of who might have got this medal. Might have been given out just for being there though.

You might have more luck with the association; if it still exists. There is still a rifle range out at Totley, but I think it's predominantly for military use these days. The last time I went there (which is admittedly some 10 or so years ago) it was pretty much just a big fenced of piece of land with nothing that looked like it could be used to store records or suchlike.

I remember sometime in the early 50s.
My friend and I accidentally wondered onto the firing range.
We would have been 10 or 11 at the time.
There were shouts of "What the f*** are you doing up there"before we were dragged down into the butts and the bullets started flying

Was probably mostly military back then too. The medals likely belonged to one of two great uncles who went off to the trenches in WW1. Neither one came back. Thought there might be a way to track down which one had won them.

The Sheffield Archive (http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/in-your-area/libraries/find/archives/sheffield-archives) is listed as having at least some of the records from The Sheffield and District Rifle Association - I would think they are your best bet.

Thanks evildrneil, I send them an e-mail and see if they can help. The most likely g. uncle was supposed to have been one of the old contemptibles. Would be interesting to see if it was true or not.
