When you think of Sheffield what comes into your mind? What do you miss when you're away? What does Sheffield have that other cities don't?

The easy ones:
Steel
Hendesons Relish
The Artic Monkeys

Anyone got any more?

The filthy, deformed pigeons outside "The Friery" on Pond Street, hobbling about on mangled feet picking at the vomit and bits of chip.

How can you miss the Arctic Monkeys, unless you actually know them ?

i like the size of the city, but the fact it still has a small town feel!

also the fact that you're never far away from trees and open fields!

Threads of the most boring and preposterous drivel - such as this (only in Sheffield)

I actually need the results of this thread for research purposes so while it may not be the most entertaining subject it needs to be practical, any constructive comments are welcome.

I have to say most people in Sheffield are exceptionally helpful too.

Steel comes into my mind, more becasue of Steel city, than the old industry, I certainly dont miss it when i go away. If someone said to me Sheffield, i would think of the peace gardens more recently, and the war remorial outside John Lewis, and the view of the city at the top of ringinglow road.

I think 'running the gauntlet' through town trying to avoid being stopped by the endless supply of charity collectors, phone salesmen and market researchers.... If I want to have any contact with you then I'll approach you!

THink the questions would be what wouldn't be missed, in that case, Meadowhall and the que outside GT news in town at lunch time.

Would miss Cafe Azure in the galleries (everyone should try Rudolph cakes by the way - like rice-crispy cakes for grown-ups..yum)
Would miss winter garden and would miss the nice Big Issue man outside Marks.

when i used to think of sheffield i though bout

hole in the road, bustling market, roast chestnut seller near xmas at pondstreet, the pet shop nr the markets, great fresh sea food, quality shops and the night life was second to none.

now days .....

the centre is a ghost town, most shops are closed, market is empty, beggers at every turn. Night life is still ok if yr prepared to dodge the beggers, crackheads and winos

Wherever I've lived in Sheffield for the last 30 odd years I've always had a view - I can see further than the other side of the street. I think that is what helps a lot of Sheffield folk being friendly -we see further than most - we don't have the boundaries in our day to day life - and therefore in our way of thinking compared to loads of other places.

Sheffields good because it has really nice people - most of the time anyway. Even the majority of Hobos are friendly, do a little dance for you etc :)

Aparently sheffield has the most greenery than the rest of England as well :)
