View Full Version : Job Hunting - It's soul destroying!

Hi all, I've just come on here for a bit of a rant

I was made redundant in May of this year from a senior position in the public sector, and thought (very wrongly  ) that I would be back in work by now. I can't remember how many applications I've put in and haven't heard anything from. It's just so rude!

My biggest gripe is with agencies though. Twice I've applied for posts and haven't managed to get an interview, and these jobs have turned up on agencies websites when the job clearly no longer exists  Why? What's the point????

I've had 5 interviews so far but unfortunately have not been successful but am trying to keep positive

On and up!

take a deep breath, pretend you're somebody else, and have a read through your post again....

... now go and re-write your CV ;)

Tee Hee. I know! I've tailored my CVs to match the jobs, but in addition to the rudeness of not responding, the volume of jobs isn't there either.

Still don't get the point of the agencies advertising jobs that don't exist though.

I had to go through this a while ago and after a while found that I had to downgrade my CV somewhat.

You mention that you had a "senior position". This can sometimes frighten off insecure managers who may not want someone that could threaten their position.

Hi cgksheff, many thanks for your response.

I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place I'm afraid. I need the high salary to pay for mortgage and stuff (and some disposable income :-) ) but at the same time recognise that although I've earnt big in the past, this does not necessarily mean that I will again, in the short term anyway.

What did you do to keep your spirits up?

Thanks

When I was made redundant I was told that if you're in employment you're far more likely to get a job than if you're unemployed.

I thought that was illogical but ended up accepting a tedious, poorly paid admin job with the Council. Within a year I found a job I really wanted and am now earning 50% more than I was a couple of years back.

If you look on the 'jobs and careers' part of the forum, there's a thread about the Home Office, who seem to be constantly recruiting in Sheffield. It doesn't sound that exciting, but it could be a means to an end......

Many thanks, I'll have a look.

One of the problems is that I'm a bit of a doughnut I'm afraid. I've spent most of my working life in lower paid jobs until about 7 years ago when I took to doing some qualifications which really opened up the jobs market for me. Since then I've done some really great jobs and felt good about myself for being able to do them and do them well.

I've registered with a temp agency and hope to get back to work real soon doing some admin work. It's just that I feel like I'm going backwards and that's not a good feeling for anybody is it. Sorry if I'm coming across on a downer, I'm usually really upbeat about life but this job hunting lark really messes with my head.

I know how your feeling, I had to downgrade when I came back from working abroad. Went from a really good wage to £5 something an hour with an agency, struggled for ages then managed to work me way up with a good company who also chucked a course in too to help me. Just work at it and dont give up, you will get there in the end, good luck x

PS - if you're thinking of applying for any jobs via the forum, I'd ask for a username change (before anybody gets any pre-conceptions ;) )

the future ex mrs willman did exactly as others state this year.
i did it a few years ago.

i took a lower paying job just to be in work, did it for 11 months jumped into another "make do" job for 3 months at a slightly higher salary and then landed a decent job with decent pay. it did take at least 2 interviews a month - the final job came through primetime agency in Leeds.

the future ex, left a high paying job for "desk duties" and less stress. within 6 months she's back in charge after a second job change to a lower salary in the interim, she's now looking @ a 30% salary increase in less than 6 months.

Yes all you Daily Mail readers! It is nigh on impossible to get a job these days, and the OP of this thread is probably able bodied! So imagine what it's like for guys like me who are disabled, and are discriminated against constantly even though it's supposed to be ILLEGAL to do so!

And no, I am not just on a rant for the sake of boosting my post count, I am making a genuine point, I have asked in several shops this week, and all say they've filled their Christmas temp quotas and tend to keep those on after Christmas if they're any good.

So it's not for the lack of trying that I don't have a job!

no disrespect Rich - but most of the shops @ Meadowhall were advertising for christmas staff in August.
perhaps you could just be alittle too late.
whilst holidaying in Cornwall in September the same chain stores were also advertising for Christmad Temp staff etc.

As someone who is genuinely trying to find a job, it would be interesting to get your opinion on this post.

Have to agree with you on the disability thing Rich. Last year whilst looking for work I decided to let some of the jobs know about my disability and some not. None of the jobs that knew about my disability replied. They can easily get away with it too by saying I wasn't qualified in other areas.

Have you registered at mysheffieldjobs.co.uk I found them very worthwhile during a brief period of unemployment. You give them your details and when a suitable job crops up they e mail you with details. I am in employment now but still get an e mail from them with the latest suitable jobs every morning!

I was made redundant 11 years ago from a well paid job. Like some other posters I took a basic clerical job, and fairly quickly got promoted - ended up in a better paid job. Redundant again this year, I got another basic level job quite quickly, but decided it was too basic so I've packed it in. :o I think when you apply for a job at a lower level than you've been doing, employers can be suspicious, :suspect: and I think it pays to underplay some of your abilities until you get the job. Then take the opportunities as they come along! I'm looking at the moment, but not in a rush this time, and I only want to work a couple of days a week, and do some voluntary work another day. The joys of semi retirement!

Dragglewhatsname. yes I've read that thread. I've not claimed for any benefit at all during this time because I don't want my mortgage lender to find out I'm unemployed incase they call in the loan.

I've been making do with redundancy pay I got but its fast running out. To the other forum members, and this is not meant as a dig at all, if only I had the comfort of another wage coming in.

My 17 year old has been trying to get a part time job since August, she has taken a cv into all the shops that she was interested in working at ( all the clothes shops) in meadowhall, and she is quite devistated as only one shop has contacted her for an interview. Fair enough she can only work certain hours due to her college studies but with meadowhall being open till 10pm over the xmas period we thought she might have been offered a few more interviews.

No its not. I was made redundant in February this year, and was back in work within 5 days of finishing. Theres always work out there, if you put the effort in to find it.

I went through the yellow pages and phoned 5 companies that deal with my trade. Out of that, I got 3 interviews, and 2 job offers.
