View Full Version : Gordon Banks Obe
herbiegrass 27-08-2004, 22:05 I am at the moment in conjunction with the Sheffield Star,
trying to get the freedom of our city for sheffield's own Gordon Banks obe. He is after all a tinsley lad and still has family in this area.
It is a terrible oversight that the city of his birth did not recognise his achievement in lifting footballs biggest trophy in 1966, the Charlton Brothers were given a civic reception and the keys, even though they never played for their home teams in the north east, as were other players from the squad.
Gordon will be 67 come christmas and I am sure he would like to think that his home town has not forgotten him, I certainly will never forget him as he is my alltime hero.
if you think he deserves better from his city, get in touch with the mayor, the Star even the pm if you feel inclined, but let's do this for Gordon, a great Sheffielder and the best goalkeeper ever to have existed.
Good luck with your quest. Gordon deserves it I feel.
joestrummer 28-08-2004, 09:33 about time a keeper got recognised...
all keepers will love it if he gets it...
PaulTansley 28-08-2004, 15:04 Actually I thought Gordon still lived in Brinsworth.
He is certainly the best goal keeper this country has ever had I its time he was awarded.
Pitty the car crash ended his career so early.
Fact Fans.
Did you know, the drummer from Pulp "Nick Banks"
is Gordon's nephew.
Why not go for an O.B.E. ??? lesser sportsmen have got it.
Why not. An outstanding goalkeeper of his time.
Banksy, should have had some form of recognition long before now, he was certainly in the top five goal keepers in the world. I was lucky..nay unlucky to have stood behind the goals at Leicester and watched him keep Wednesday at bay almost single handed, he was the first man to ever get 10 in the Sunday People match reports, and it was a privelige to have seen him do it ......although I didn't see it that way at twenty to five that Saturday.
Gordon Banks is the best keeper I ever saw play. If it hadn't been for the brilliance of Gordon Banks then the Wednesday keeper of the time, Ron Springett, would have got a lot more England caps than he did.
herbiegrass 13-09-2004, 21:16 " NO SAFER HANDS, THAN THOSE OF HE,
WHO STOOD BEHIND THE LIONS OF ENGLAND"
My late father always claimed to have played against Banks in a Wincobank versus Ecclesfield match. Was he pulling my leg, or did Banksy really play for Ecclesfield? At any rate, I agree with the nice things people have said about him so far. We should be very proud of him.
herbiegrass 23-09-2004, 19:47 Hi Timo,
I don't think Banksy ever played for Ecclesfield, he did play for Sheffield boys and Millspaugh before he became an amature at Chesterfield. Though I suppose he could have had a match in this area.
Hi Herb, thanks for your reply. Now you've mentioned Sheffield Boys something has clicked. I think my late Dad played for them, and somehow I've got things mixed up. Sadly, he's not around to ask anymore. He wasn't the type to make things up, and rarely pulled anyone's leg [that's more my territory]. Aside from this, I support your aims 100%. Banks was THE best.
herbiegrass 25-09-2004, 20:48 At this time the council is meeting to discuss the possibility of having a Walk of Fame maybe on Fargate, of course Banksy will no doubt be included, but who else do you think should have this honour?
I personally think that it should only be for Sheffield's own sons and daughters, but what do you think?
herbiegrass 29-10-2004, 18:41 It seems now that the freedom of the city has gone out of the window in favour of the SHEFFIELD LEGENDS idea,
there is proposed to be a WALK OF FAME outside the town hall, where the names of Sheffield legends will be embedded into the pavement.
the council will be asking the people of Sheffield to nominate their favorites, and they will be discussed amongst the board and the successful ones will have their names on the walk.
who do you want to see in there?
I'd like to see members of Cabaret Voltaire and The Human League, Sean Bean, Joe Cocker and various footballing legends from both clubs [who says a Blade can't be diplomatic ?] in there. I suggest an alternative Infamous gallery, which would include dreadful types like Clive Betts, the achingly-unfunny Bobby Knutt, etc.

I guess that Tony Chrisitie has suddenly jumped back on to the list, but I would like to see Patrick McGoohan (The Prisoner) who, although not born in Sheffield (he was actually born in New York) lived here from the age of 7 and went to my school (De La Salle at Pitsmoor).
Watching reruns of "The Prisoner" convinces me more and more that it was a groundbreaking show, and took the "Big Brother" concept of government to a new level.
ENGLANDER 24-01-2007, 16:36 Well you learn something every day Brilliant Keeper and part of the best England team of all time but allways thought he was from Chesterfield or was that Clements got to go and do a search now
herbiegrass 24-01-2007, 20:25 I would like to thank all who took part in this little survey, but as a result of my tormenting the council repeatidly, they finally did something for"Our Gordon".
last summer they installed the first LEGENDS plaque out side the town hall, and Banksy was the first to be honored, I was luck enought o be invited along to meet my Hero, and I was in awe of him still, completely lost for words, but fortunatly we are in regular contact by post.
but what a great day, to meet him, and have tea with the mayor and his lovely wife, and to meet Gordon's family and friends.
I shall never forget it, and I had two shirts signed as well, lucky me.
anyhow, hope you all go and see the plaque outside the TH, along with Def Leonard and Helen Sharpen.
bye fer now......
kensimmo 25-01-2007, 07:12 I actually thought Ron, in his pomp, the better of the two; but agree that by 1966 Gordon was indeed the finest keeper in the world.
