Hi Im planning a surprise short break to Rome for my partner in the spring. I know nothing about the place other than the obvious tourist bits which of course I want to see. Can anyone recommend a hotel or place to stay, in fact any tips would be welcome.

Am going to Rome in December and booked a hotel called 'River Palace' on Expedia, was a reasonable price and gets good reviews on Trip Advisor.

Whenever I travel anywhere new I always choose a hotel with the help of the tripadvisor (http://www.tripadvisor.com) web site where you can read hotel reviews from loads of people that have been there before. I've done this countless times and never been disappointed. To get the low down on Rome see this link (http://rome-hotels.tripadvisor.com/Tourism-g187791-Rome_Lazio-Vacations.html).

There are some really cheap flights on Easyjet and Jet2. You can book hotels on-line and put together your own package.

I cannot I have the cash, but no card to book on line, I also asked over how much it may cost and she told me around a grand each.

I would reccomend staying in the area around the Termini. It isn't the nicest area in Rome, but you can get to anywhere in Rome (and elsewhere in Italy) from the Termini (underground, buses etc). The hotel I stayed in was nice enough and very reasonably priced and there were tons of other hotels round there.

Try Octopus Travel. It will let you narrow the search down by area's of the city so you can compare the prices.

If you're planning to go to the colluseum, you can avoid the queues (long, boring, tedious and hot) by getting a ticket from elsewhere - they are available from other sources (can't remember where though - try tourist info, or at the station).

Speaking of the station, keep your bags on you at all times around that area.

You can get to most places by walking.

If you want a cheap lunch, there are loads of small pizza shops selling squares of pizza, cheap and very tasty.

If you go the vatican, all the ex-popes are lined up as staues round St Marks square. As you look at the papal balcony, there's one over on the right that looks like he's having a quick "fiddle" in his cassock.

Be careful if you're taking camera's video's etc. There are gangs who snatch them and then sell them on to other tourists, also agree with other replies about tickets. You are better off going with a tour guide especially round Cistine Chapel and Colluseum.

i would say if its your first time then your best bet to get to see everything is to buy a ticket for an open top bus and travel round that way for a day- you can hop on and off when you want and it will help you with your bearings.

find a friend with a card. I dont know how long you are going for but i f it is a week a grand each is way over the top with a budget airline and a reasonable hotel i would sey £350 would be nearer the mark keep a way from travel agents if you pm me with what you want I will find you flights and hotel far cheaper

i went to Rome last Nov, and can reccomend some truly strange metal and rock pubs/clubs. There used to be sheffield theme pub, but we couldn't find it, probably shut down. The food was poor on the whole and at night there's a distint smell of **** in the air due to the lack of toilets. but there are some amazing things to see. I shall dig my rough gide out and have a butchers.

the Rock Castle cafe, Via B. Cenci 8
A small rock club, nothing too heavy, a bit like the G-mex carpark in Manc, all vaulted rooms with a medeval theme. Opens at 9 till 3. You won't be able to find this place during the day as it's only a small door covered by a roller shutter, even the sign.
Black out club
The high pomp cuutung edge in miserable goths, a bit of a strange mix in music, on minute it's sisters then ramstein maybe folled by stranglers. They wern't serving anything but spirits when we went, no bottles and no draught. but still a good night. And they certainly made space for us on the dance floor, with our unique moves.
The Full Moon club, Via Luigi Santini 12/13
this is the strangest place i have ever been. It's a members bar but costs nothing to join.and is the only club with a 'medeval vicking metal night'
the walls are dorbed with majik sybolism and theres a cracking werewolf, maybe not the place for a romantic getaway, but a very special place.
There also a miriad of Irish bars
Trinnity college, Via del Collegio Romano 6
Mad jacks, via Arenula 20
and a Scottish theme pub, can't remember the name, which has the best looking Thia ladys behind the bar, and the foods good to.
Have fun
