View Full Version : Very upsetting scene!
Yesterday, at around 2.45pm, an elderly gentleman by the name of Walter collapsed outside the postoffice on Lee`s Hall Road. When my partner went over to help, he realized he`d stopped breathing and promptly started cpr while I was relaying directions from the ambulance service, until the paramedics arrived. I am so proud of him for his efforts, he was quite distraught afterwards, as was the lady from the co-op next door, who also helped.
Sadly, from what I have been told, I don`t think the Walter made it. But that dosn`t stop me being super proud of my hero, for taking control of the situation, and trying to save his life.
If any of Walters friends or relatives are on here, I would like to reassure you that everything possible was done.
Plain Talker 15-11-2006, 14:57 well done your partner, for doing his best, lindix. You are rightly proud of him.
He is a hero, indeed. *takes her hat off to him at his bravery*
It sounds like the poor chap's time was simply "up", and, I extend my sympathies to his family...
However, your fella's attempts would have given the poor old lad a fighting chance, till the paramedics arrived. All he could have done was his best, which he did.
I remember when I had to use rescusitation on my friend's 15 month old baby boy, when he stopped breathing, and, by gosh, it does shake you up.
This is a timely reminder, to all of us, to go on a course, and get some CPR training under our belts, we never know when we might be called upon to use it.
Yes, you all deserve a pat on the back for your best efforts . It's nice to hear about someone who is willing to stop and try to help rather than posts from people asking the welfare of injured people but who never consider stopping to see if they can help at the time .
A good point has been made about doing a course in CPR and first aid ! What possible valid reason or excuse can anyone have for NOT doing these courses ?
Stiffmyster 15-11-2006, 15:04 well done!! very upsetting i know, its happened to me before when i had to do cpr on a lady on a night out.thankfully she survived.
but really well done to your guy for taking this on as i bet there was plenty of bystanders too scared to do anything............
hes a true hero.you too as you did help also.:)
Thankyou for your kind words. Both me and my partner have done first aid courses as part of our training for work(we also have to take refresher courses), but I have to say, it`s totally different when in a real situation like that!

i second, third and fourth that.
*shouts* DO A FIRST AID COURSE!
there is NO earthly reason why someone should not/cannot do a course, and save a life.
My first aid certificate is actually due for renewal this month, so I need to update my skills.

Absolutely! I'm not wearing a hat right now, but I was I would take it off too!
Seriously, very well done, even if the outcome wasn't good, at least he did his best to save Walter.
MissGobby 15-11-2006, 16:04 oh my, is this the same Walter that used to sit near Marcliffe/Wisewood school and give children choclates and sweets and papers aeroplanes and things, he was such a lovely man!!!! hope it is not him, but he was an elderly gentleman :(

No, it`s not him. Lee`s Hall Road is in Norton Lee`s.

I live across the road and work from home, i saw the ambulance turn up and perform CPR on this guy (you and your husband must have been the people in the silver people carrier).
Hats off to your partner, like someone above pointed out its easy to stand and watch but very difficult to react in a situation like this. I don't know what i would have done in that situation.
I can imagine your partner was feeling shaken up, i felt shaken up just seeing the paramedics trying to resusitate him as it didn't look like a nice situation. He was put in the ambulance and rushed off so i presumed they'd bought him round at the scene.
yes, we were in the people carrier, I greatly appreciate the lovely lady who watched my young child(who was in the back of the car) while this was happening!
We`re not sure of the outcome, as when shortly after the paramedics took over, we left the scene as my partner was quite shaken and we had to collect our other children from school.
If anyone out there knows for certain what the outcome was, could they please let us know, I was told at school the next day that he hadn`t made it, but it would be fantastic to find out he had!

I will ask Richard in the post office what happened to the bloke.
The Police arrived and were taking statements about what happened, there weren't many witnesses about though. Someone said he'd tripped?
Mod Note: Some of the comments on this thread have been in extemely bad taste. It may be worth remembering that this forum has many members across Sheffield, some of which may be this gentleman's relatives. Please show a little more decorum.
Don_Kiddick 16-11-2006, 08:57 There's no decorum, in the forum.....
I'll get my toga ;)
I would really appreciate it, if you could ask and let us know.
Stockers 16-11-2006, 10:40 Hi
Got your PM but can't reply been a new user.
I only signed up as i told my mate about this happening and he's a regular poster on here and made me aware of this thread.
I thought the police would liked to have spoken to your partner, there were only a few people on the scene by the time the police were asking questions.
Cheers.
