View Full Version : Do you consume a lot of alcohol?

How much alcohol do you drink in a week? 14 pints, 30 pints, beer or lager? what about spirits ( the kind you get out of a bottle ) one bottle a day? two, four, six, how is it that some people can consume vast quantities with very little after effect.

Michael Barrymore could take enormous amounts and still host a show on TV. plus taking drugs as well, what have these people got
that allows them to abuse their bodies in such a way.

Before my brother in law died, he would drink 26 pints of beer at one sitting and still be sober, I went with him for a drink and I could not keep pace with the pints piling up in front of me on the table.

I don't like the taste of beer anyhow and certainly would not want to sit in a pub all night mopping ale, the thought of it makes me feel ill, and having to breathe that blue haze from dozens of smokers cigarettes would finish me off.:x

I dont drink any alcohol. I dont need to drink it to be happy or have a good time.
Im not particularly keen on it anyway but i dont like the fact it is so bad for you (liver, kidney, brain, high calorie content) and i dont like the effect it has on me.
I prefer a nice fruit juice anyday. I tastes much nicer and doesnt make you feel sick or ill the next day. I really dont see the point in drinking alcohol.

Alcohol isn't actually bad for you - it's only bad for you if you over-indulge, as are most things. If alcohol makes you feel sick the next day, you've over-indulged. (Just as over eating will make you feel sick!) Going in smokey pubs is bad for you though - so I see halevan's point...

It's fair enough if you don't like the taste... I personally drink alcohol and I actually like the taste of most beers and lagers but hate )(with a passion) whisky, brandy, rum, etc... even with a good mixer. (I like gin and vodka though - but only with mixers.) What's the point in drinking something you don't like?

I wouldn't say I drink a lot. Not any more. At university we used to drink 1-2 bottles of wine each every night... and on a couple of nights even more - maybe around 10 pints +

I like to get drunk. I'm not an aggressive drunk, so it's always good fun. I've seen some people who don't know when to stop though and turn nasty... In those situations, you can't blame the booze though - blame the person drinking it instead.

I'm a big Guinness drinker now. (It's good for you!) Did you know that a pint of Guinness has less calories in it that a pint of semi-skimmed milk!?! :o

I have a drink most days, it could be one bottle of lager or a glass of wine, very rarely get drunk anymore, as I don't like the after effects.

I like most drinks, but can not stand aniseed based drinks ( had a bad experience) Pernod/Ouzo/Raki/Ricard. I am feeling sick already.

Given the infrequency I drink alcohol, it must amount to about 1 pint per week!

It's something that I can take or leave. All my mates think I'm stupid but I just don't have a taste for it at all! I know someone who can drink all night and all day and it not having any kind of effect on her, it's madness. I just feel that I don't have to have a drink inside me to have a laugh and enjoy myself!

I don't like hangovers, so never too tempted by pub, BUT.... once I'm in there I really struggle to leave until kicked out after last orders. By which tiime I'm feeling fine and dandy and ready to party more. Then I wake up for work the next day, and remain in hangover mode for about 2 days.

Shortly after I left college I used to drink ALL weekend with my mates.

But when I got pregnant it stopped.
One because I couldn't stomach even a slight tipple of wine without throwing up,
Two, it isn't exactly good for baby
Three, I couldn't wear what i wanted without looking fat.

Now I look fat all the time so I really do not want to go out on the razz.

Hey, watch your mouth! Firth Park's pretty safe. There's only a couple of pubs in the area, and one of them - Firth Park WMC on Idsworth Road - is only frequented by people over the age of 90.

Now Shiregreen - that's a problem area, oh yes. All those gypsies, y'see. The council moved them there when they redevloped the Lower Don Valley area.

Where's your car tonight, Jon?

Rude boy jon.
I am respectable lady, just can't type very well when drunk.
Actually only had my car nicked once and that was when I lived in pleasant (?), rural Boston in Lincolnshire - car never got nicked in Firth Park (not mine anyway).

I used to drink a lot and often, especially when I was a student but nowadays it might be once a week. My tolerance has dropped and I'm quite cheap to take out these days.

I stopped drinking after I had had the kids as it's no fun looking after 2 hyper tots when you're hung over or having to get up several times in the night to a sick child when you've had too much pop.

Funnily enough Moon when I was pregnant my midwife advised me to have a drink (just the one) each night as a way of de-stressing myself. I didn't though as like you I suffered with sickness. :( :(

Errr, this is really quite interesting. It's like 'guess what random thread is going to pop up next from the archives'

Try and find one about pineapples, or maybe one about dogs with green and yellow stripes.

Alcohol has a depressive effect on the immune system, so am not sure that it's not 'actually bad for you'.

Haven't drunk alcohol for a few years... don't really feel the need!

Yeah, it does do bad stuff in small amounts even... dehydrating, one of the few things that can pass straight to the brain, carcinogenic metabolites... I'm sure there are more things, I just don't know them.

Alcohol affects people in different ways. lizzmobile you needed the word 'can' in that sentence. I've never been depressed from drinking alcohol.

I hardly ever drink. Mostly a social drinker but very rarely to excess. In fact I've only ever been sick from a hangover once in my life. I don't see any point in over doing it. I only drink what I like and never anything I don't.

What I actually said was that it has a depressive effect on the immune system. As in it weakens your defenses when fighting illnesses. I didn't say it makes you depressed.

Meaks sweetie, I've seen you after a drink remember? .... the life and soul of the party! :hihi:

OMG LizzM, we agree on a science thread ;) .

Alcohol can have a depressive effect on the immune system, in that it has been demonstrated to reduce the activity of some subsets of white blood cells, particularly those responsible for clearing up bacteria and the detritus of infection.

Red wine can have anti-oxidant effects though. At least that's what I tell myself when I open another bottle...

Phew! I was waiting for you to show up! Funny isn't it? I consider it more a health thread, but thanks for backing me up.

So, how do the anti-oxidant effects (which I love too, btw!) weigh up against the immuno-depressant effects?

It is health really, but humour me; I'm an immunologist :) .

I would probably suggest that alcohol should sooner be avoided, if anyone is concerned about the health benefits or otherwise. You'd be better off getting the anti-oxidants from veges, brazil nuts and the like. Besides, the anti-oxidant effect of the odd glass of red wine is negated by the fact that most people (me included) often don't stop at one glass. I'd be more concerned about the effects of alcohol on the liver, than its immunosuppresant effects though.

Red grape juice is equally good. Or you can buy resvatrol supplements, which is the main ingredient they've identified as being an antioxidant... I'd still go for eating the actual grapes / drinking grape juice myself though.

Wassit like on cornflakes then?

Seriously, I don't drink more than 8 or 9 pints a week ...
Firstly I couldn't afford to drink more and secondly I suffer from real bad hangovers.
Very rarely drink shorts as most of them taste awful, wine is ok with a meal but I do have a taste for Guinness and continental beers (English Lager is bl**dy awful)

I used to keep telling myself a glass of wine was good for me too but then I finally realised that it was more and more often becoming three or four, and on a fairly regular basis, so I stopped altogether. I have to say I feel much more healthy now (about 8 months after stopping) than I ever have, I haven't had a cold this year, I have more energy, I started eating more healthily and generally care about myself more and thus feel better about myself. I'd definitely recommend quitting to anyone who's considering it!
