View Full Version : Real Ales at the Dove and Rainbow

We are expanding our range of top selling cask ales to have TEN real ales on handpull PLUS some real ciders......who would have thought that rock music and real ale would have worked so well together....(well, we did actually, but that's not the point). And even if you don't like your rock too much, there is a quiet end of the pub to enjoy your drink in peace. We even have those wonderful old fashioned dimpled beer jugs (with handles) if you ask, as long as you don't walk out with them:mad:

New tomorrow to compliment the current BLACK SHEEP, FLOWERS IPA and HOBGOBLIN, is the excellant SHEPHERD NEAME SPITFIRE, one of the best cask ales from Britains oldest Brewers. Also coming in the next few days will be OLD SPECKLED HEN and BURTON ALE, both very distinctive cask ales:thumbsup:

Thanks to the Dove's past history as one of Whitbreads 1990's TUT N SHIVE branded houses, which were well known for real ales as well as gimmicky decor, we have ten handpulls which are coming back into service after some years of redundancy. We will soon become one of the very few pubs in Sheffield to have as many cask ales flowing at the same time, so if you are a real ale drinker, drop in and try some of our hand pulled gems:) Lovingly cared for in our cellar, we do things the old fashioned proper way, and you are welcome to sample ANY of our cask ales before buying....just ask:)

Nice one goldenfleece!

Good to see the Dove getting back on the ale circuit. I promise to try and get there very, very soon. And I will demand a tankard with handle! :)

It's probably worth pointing out (as a fan of the DnR) that it had Hobgoblin and something else on before the new incarnation, so it's always had real ale. Nice one though. TEN! Ace.

Something for John to drink apart from Strongbow then?;)

But in its previous incarnation it was nearly always undrinkable - I tried it on several different occasions and I could seldom finish a pint (which is saying something!). But by all accounts goldenfleece has sorted out the problems - and greatly expanded the range too. Sounds great, must visit again soon.

I cannot comment on real ale served by the Dove in its previous 'incarnation' as never drunk it. However, I do know all the cask ale and beer lines were replaced last Month. Certainly the place has had a history of real ales going back to the TUT days, but I think its been at least 7/8 years or so since there were 4 real ales on at once. When we get all TEN handpulls working I think we will be probably the ONLY traditional and original pub in Sheffield to have this many ales.

As much as I like real ale, I prefer to drink in a proper, trad pub, rather than the more modern bar/pub, as somehow cask ale belongs to the old pubs, despite increasing dramatically in popularity this year.

There were at least 4 (nearly undrinkable) real ales on as recently as 3-4 years ago, when on of my exes was working behind the bar.

IIRC, they were Pedigree, Directors, Old Speckled Hen, and the other was either Stones or Tetley.

I drank bottles in there.

Glad to hear it's sorted out now anyway. I'll have to get down for some choons!

Oh I forgot quite a few of the old Tetley places stocked Burton Ale back in the late 80's and early/mid 90's...I used to drink vast quantities of it in the Hadfield on Barber Road. In fact its my FAVE all time real ale.........

The Burton Ale will be on either Wednesday or Thursday night, depends when its ready  Sourced some more Hobgoblin now as well......

In time for Friday then? I reckon we'll be out in force again! (that corner next to the speakers is quickly becoming The Gathering's social hangout on Friday nights) BTW - cheers for playing all the songs our group requested.

Oh and Congrats on getting the Indie night sorted (Every other Tuesday?) Talk about making it Our Local - the DJ's - Starr Adam and Paul, are part of the friday night social for The Gathering, its seems we're gradually overrunning the pub's nightimes!

So it looks like The Gathering nights are probably going to be extended to Every Friday, Every other Wednesday (Everfink) every other Tuesday (Starr, Ad and Paul's as yet un-named indie night)

This is becoming something of a partnership, we come regularly and empty your barrels and you recruit my members/friends as DJs!!!

Indeed it was, and certainly still is a gorgeous ale, but was quite difficult to source, so I guess this explains its rarity in this area. Don't know if this ale is on sale anywhere else in Sheffield at the present time......it will be on tap from tomorrow night anyway.......

new ales coming this weekend include offerings from the tasty JENNINGS range..

Much as I appreciate choice, sometimes it's counterproductive to have too many real ales on at once. I'd rather have a choice of 4 in top condition than 10, of which some may be going 'off' (not through any fault of the proprietor, simply that real ale has a finite life).

Also, what sort of prices is the Dove charging for its real ales? Could be a factor, bearing in mind the proximity of Wetherspoons.

Andy C
21-11-2006, 12:32
The Dove and Rainbow are charging more than 'Spoons, but the prices are reasonable for the city centre.

Personally I would rather pay a bit more to drink in the Dove than in Wetherspoons totally soul-less barn.

I've had the odd slightly off pint in the Draft recently (like it often was before the last refit) so have been giving it a wide berth.

I agree - sometimes it's counterproductive to have a lot of real ales on at once. But it can work fine if they are looked after properly and plenty of throughput - several examples in Sheffield.

The smell of vomit by the bar is rather off putting too, not to mention the customers.

When I worked in Cav. Court, we used to call it 'Work With Taps'.

Only expanding one at a time to a maximum of ten.....we may find it levels off around 5 or 6 cask ales on at any one time to be viable but its a process of market testing to determine this really.......many pubs do have 6 or more on, ie PORTER BROOK, DEV CAT, RISING SUN, it depends how much we attract the real ale crowd in the week......

SPECIAL CASK ALE OFFERS WEDNESDAY/THURSDAY this week,

OLD SPECKLED HEN £2 a pint

and dont forget the delicious FLOWERS IPA is ALWAYS on at £2 a pint......
also on at the moment BURTON ALE £2.40
and SPITFIRE £2.40

HOBGOBLIN back on this weekend as I know a lot of people want this one back, and so we are having it as a regular cask ale and not a guest ale.....

Well Wetherspoons pubs keep their prices low by buying beer which is toward the end of it's shelf life.

The Dove and Rainbow will be buying Beer which is ready and not old. It should taste better and for longer.

I may be wrong, but isn't Castle Eden brewery long gone and just the brand name lives on.
If it's being advertised in Hartlepool, I suspect it's something to do with Camerons.

Yes. If I remember correctly the brewery shut about 10 years ago (maybe a touch less), around the time that that dreadful keg 'Eden Bitter' was being punted about. As far as I know, cask Castle Eden is dead.

edit - quick google shows it to be alive and, yes, brewed by Camerons

AH....another convert from the dreaded evil lager...

soon you will smoking a long pipe with cherry flavoured tobacco, sporting a tasteful fuzzy jumper with elbow patches, an overgrown 'mad professor' style beard, and discussing specific gravities and bizarre Cornish brewing practices involving Monks jumping up and down on the 'mash' with fellow real ale drinkers.....:hihi:

...(except the stereotypical image of the real ale drinker is now utterly and completely wrong...its 18 yr old students onwards...since the start of the year cask ale popularity has risen sharply which is a very good sign for the real ale market and image)

....you will LOVE the camerons Strongarm, a delicious and very fruity 'ruby red' ale. This stuff is just so addictive I cannot believe it....

Oh WOW:thumbsup: Cameron Strongarm? Hallelujah!!

What a mighty fine bevvie this ruby coloured, heart warming, deliciously head-knocking beer is.

We used to stop in the Endeavour pub in Whitby (usually around Christmas time, 1993, 1994 &c) and this is the beer that was on tap in the bar (little bar, real fire, dartboard, jukebox with all the Christmas records on which would play till about 3 in the morning. Our bedroom was directly above the bar and all you got was the thud-thud of the jukebox).

Even a pal of mine who never touched beer forewent his lager for Strongarm. Seven or eight of this stuff and you were on your way. It took my mate about 4 or 5 pints before he had to cash his chips in and go to bed!!

Easily, when looked after, one of the best beers money can buy. (It's also a heavy hangover!)

The last place I had some locally was in Holmfield of all places.

I shall definitely make a detour to the D & R if this sexy little blighter is on tap.

You've made my day!!!

Its on my list of new ales to try in the future.........there are SOOOO many now though to choose from with the most amazing names!!!!...... and thats not including many of the tiny micro breweries that proliferate all over the UK, and which are growing almost daily.

WELCOME BACK TO REAL BEER AT LAST!!!!!

Ever since 'keg' beer was introduced back in the early 1960's, cask ale has been on the slow decline, up to a point around 1970 when there was barely any cask ales left at all until CAMRA was created to turn the tide......its taken 36 years but cask ale sales are rising rapidly on a scale not seen since the inception of CAMRA.

To me, the beer cellar is not just a simple 'plug and play' keg operation like far too many of pubs and bars now, but somewhere where you nourish REAL beer, and take pride in venting and tapping the casks, knowing that each is a work of art when it makes its way up the pipes to the swan neck beer engine.

If I had my way ultimately I would ONLY sell cask ales and cider and wine out of great big wooden barrels.....there is a certain pub in Derbyshire with a sign on the door that the Landlord (a very well built publican), will thump anyone (its been tried and its true!!!) who dares ask for "draught lager" in his pub, and the words Stella, Carling, Heineken, etc, are all 'swear words' that are heavily discouraged!!!

But I think I would like to sell cask lagers ultimately...not sure if anyone else does in Sheffield but had some before and it makes certain well known keg lager brands taste like ****........

NEW YEARS EVE....open until 1am.....will be a real festival of rock old and new, lots of classic rock xmas songs, etc....and plenty of delicious Xmas style offers......probably free entry but not 100% sure yet, got to check a few details out on that score......

Ooo sounds like it might be the answer to my dilema about what to do... of course, I shall have to make sure your bar staff refuse to sell me scrumpy... I have to work the next day!!!

Dear God, since when have I been a member of the Gathering?

sorry my dear please accept this correction - you're right, that is something of a generalisation, the night was organised as a gathering social and then it seemed to expand somewhat as folks found out about it. Naturally because of this there were folks there who weren't members - my comment was to advise that you were there as part of the social, not the society.
Apoligies if you took offence at this misunderstanding, none was intended.

Try Mitchells at Meadowhead, or the Dram Shop.

If it's real ale to take home you are after, then the Archer Road Beer Stop is always a good bet. It's a specialist off licence, with shelves and shelves of bottled beer crammed into the little corner shop! They also do a good continental selection too, and if you are drinking the same night, they do handpulled ales in carry out cartons!

Indeed! In days of yore I and a mate lived on Abbeydale Road opposite Lowes, and we were perennially skint ....... take out cartons, and sat on the corner with pint pots filled from said cartons ........ and it was by far the nearest Wards outlet :)

I think the nearest would have been the Priory Inn (possibly the Crown or Bridge), and the easiest the Barrel, but Small Beer (as it was) was the best!

I miss proper Wards so much ...... :(

Also at Archer Road the owner and staff know their stuff and will happily suggest beers or discuss suitable choices.

Back on topic, the Strongarm was going down a bit too well on my last visit to the Dove...

Just a thread to say that this is an excellent bar/pub

Went in tonight with a mate. Plenty of cask ales on the go, as well as draught beers.

Without doubt the only bar I have ever been in that only plays decent music. My mate requested a few songs, and although they didnt have any Dream Theater, they played the requested tracks straight away.

Will definitly be going again, superb pub.

That is one of the unwritten laws of being a DJ, you can never have absolutely everything, and the one thing you forget to take one day is what is suddenly wanted..Dream Theatre will be added today from my archives at home, no one has ever asked for that yet....

We try to play EVERY song requested (if its rock and we have it and its not some obscure 65 minute long pink floyd remix)), no matter how busy we are, so we wont fob you off with "might play it later mate" or "try and squeeze it in sometime soon"...if we have it its added to the playlist ASAP.....

Just grab me and ask or give me a list, I love it!
I jump back and forth a lot from the DJ box to serving at the bar so you have to be quick, I multi-task like crazy on busy nights.....

New Ale on tonight is COURAGE DIRECTORS BITTER, complimenting our regular FLOWERS IPA,WYCHWOOD HOBGOBLIN, and the superb BLACK SHEEP ALE....
Dont forget we also have real ale in bottles, ie OLD PERCULIAR, ABBOT ALE, OLD SPECKLED HEN, BASS, etc, and other guest bottles, and more to come soon as we expand our cask handpull range in the new year......

see you soon:)

Watch out for really excellant cask ales coming to the Dove in the next 2 Months. Included on my list of ales to offer is BRYSONS Hurricane Bitter, Black SHeep Ale (not to be confused with our standard Black Sheep bitter), LEES Dragon's Fire, NEWMANS' Last Lion of London, SKINNERS Cornish Knocker, HALL AND WOODHOUSE Tanglefoot, WICKWARS Long John SIlver, so quite a few you won't find anywhere else I am sure......

Looking forward to some of these......
