I know its fairly short notice, and I`ve not got the route mapped properly yet, but anyone wishing to try Wharncliffe Crags and Greno woods is welcome to turn up at The Acorn Inn, at Burncross, Chapeltown at 10 a.m. Sunday for a fairly long walk, maybe 7/8 miles. There`ll be pub stops on the way back (as usual!), but possibly nowhere to get food apart from sunday dinners at a pub at Grenoside and at the Acorn.
For Purdys benefit, yes I will be obtaining a proper map for this one, and there won`t be as much guesswork as normal! Having said that, doesn`t the lack of direction add to the fun? We`ll see.
Anybody new wishing to join will be welcome. Either come by car on the A61 out of Sheffield towards Barnsley, and once thro` Greno woods, take the Chapletown/Burncross turn off on the right, then 400 yards down the hill the Acorn is in front of you at the cross roads.
For people coming by bus there is an excellent service, the 77 which leaves the Interchange (Pond Street?) at 9.35, arriving at the Acorn at exactly 10.00. Return time is on the hour every hour.

No idea, sorry, wouldn`t think the Acorn is at Burncross cos its a proper food pub, but you could call them. Having said that, the Acorn is where we`ll be parking so your dog could go in the car at the end of the walk if it isn`t a dog pub. The other pubs at Grenoside are Red Lion(known as Top Red in Grenoside seeing as there are twoRed Lions!), Old Harrow, and Angel. Oops, that makes 4 pubs, might end up being a crawl! Seriously, if you want to call them, if it turns out that one of them is a dog pub, we`ll go in that one! Having said that, I thought you weren`t coming due to hangovers?

Are we eating in pubs or bringing food? Just so I know to bring food or cash!

I think the pubs will possibly just do sunday dinners, which is fine if thats what you want, but if you want just a sarnie, it might be better to take your own. Thats what i`m going to do

Fair weather walker are we tut tut? Got to take a chance sometimes in life my friend. Anyway, the weather forecast I saw was for rain spreading from the south sunday, so we might be ok in the morning. Mind you, south of where I dont know!
Obviously if its heavy persistent stuff Sunday morning it`ll be cancelled, but the ones who are def. going have each others mobiles so theres no chance of anyone turning up and being on their own!
Maybe see you at a later walk

Nah, Far from it, I really enjoyed my ten days of under water camping on Offa's Dyke. Oh the nostalgia of wading through wet barley fields with 6lbs of red clay on each boot…

I’m just saying smart hikers use the weather forecasts to not get into situations that require the use of their superior skills / Flu remedies / an RAF helicopter.* :)

Ah, Mantaspook... I can reveal that in rough weather conditions the Walkers Group seldom venture any further than to and from the bar - we talk many a good walk! ;)

So its more of a "Johnny Walkers" kind of group then.

Now that sounds more fun...how do I join? :D

You have to sign your name in blood :hihi:

Please feel free to pop along to any walk arranged - the more the merrier (especially after a few pints)

I should have known to take taxman's tales of battling force 10 gales while negotiating Kinder Scout with a pinch of salt  :) .

Sounds like you`ve done far more walking than I have, so I`ll bow to ye superior experience on weather conditions on this occasion!
However, as is the norm in this country the weather forecast changes day yo day, and as at this morning, its looking a lot better than it did 2/3 days ago! So fingers crossed, and we might not get wet at all! Well, only on the inside! Mebbe see ye after all?

You’re right Scubz, the forecasts do change from day to day, it looks like the rain is now due Saturday night so it may be brighter on Sunday.

I once read that if the forecasters overestimate the wind speed by 1 MPH in a 48 hour forecast the bad weather can arrive up to 8 hours earlier than expected, so it’s wise to check the forecast on the morning of the hike for the best accuracy.

On long distance walks you can make your own weather observations to enable you to predict the next day’s weather with reasonable accuracy.

For example, stand with your back to the wind and observe the high cirrus clouds, if the clouds are moving to your right the weather is about to deteriorate, (“If they’re going to the right, its gonna be sh*te”)

If they are moving to your left it usually means an improvement. If the clouds are moving in either direction along the same axis as the lower wind that’s hitting your back then there is no change.

Try it next time you are out.

I am afraid that it looks like I may not be able to come after all. I really have got so much to do. I'll see how things go today, but I can't promise I'll be there. Sorry folks. :(

Well that was another enjoyable forum outing, nice to see Scubz and Bambi again and to meet joyz

Thanks to Scubz for organising it

Took in Warncliffe Crags, a cute donkey wearing a coat, a little jack russell that joined us for a short way and the stunning scenery

EDIT Two pubs in one day!!!!! <hic>

You forgot to mention the pubs Tess! Oh, and the usual Scubz meanderings of which I`m beginning to get embarrassed by! Today has proved one thing hasn`t it, that even with a map I can get us lost, haha, but its all part of the fun isn`t it!

Lets have a mention for the young lady at the Acorn Inn at Burncross too, who gave us such excellent service with the pots of tea in the beer garden, even though she had to walk miles to get to us!

Finally, just to say that if anyone is interested in visiting Wharncliffe Crags to enjoying the fantastic scenery, and also to take a walk through the 3 woods we went through today, then keep an eye open for a future walk, cos we`re going to do it again!

Glad you had a good time. I'm really sorry I couldn't get out. The weather turned out beautiful again, though didn't it? At least I hope is was as nice up your way as here in S Central. It's also a pity we couldn't discuss matters arising. Never mind. We should have a pub meet soon. What do you think?

Are we sticking with the Cask and Cutler or venturing elsewhere? (preferably another dog pub, for obvious reasons ;) )
