are you wanting to password-protect files on your computer, or secure your wireless connection so that no-one can get on without you allowing it?
could somebody tell me why i keep losing connection, something about losing or re-newing the Ip address??
Do you have poor signal strength?

Router make?
Broadband provider?
To stop the signal dropping out, it may be that you need to change the channel on your router, which is done via the configuration manager. I had to change mine to 10 when I first got my router (BT Voyager 2100), which BT advised me to do, and I've not had any problems since.
Also, make sure there's nothing electrical anywhere near the router/network card "aerials".
pinklady 15-11-2006, 13:25 The router is a linksys wireless g adsl home gateway ... whatever that means?
Phone line BT

I want to secure my wireless conection to stop others using it
Im online now after an hours arsin around (dont know what im doing) but it keeps losing the IP address ???
I
mr.blaze 15-11-2006, 13:28 Could be an I.P address conflict.

Linksys is the maker, wireless g means "no wires to a pre-defined standard" :D and ADSL is the type of phone line it uses.

This is a nice Linksys guide to wireless security (http://www2.nohold.net/noHoldCust541/Prod_1/Articles57815/Enabling_Wireless_Security_On_a_Linksys_Router_Usi ng_a_Linksys_Wireless_Adapter.htm?)
Regarding the IP dropping, does you're network have any other computers on at the same time (possible IP conflict as mentioned), do you have the router give out IP adresses automatically (DHCP). Would you feel confident setting a fixed IP and turning off DHCP (I'm assuming it's defaulted to on, on the router, most are)?
Is it a laptop or a desktop? Can you plug a network cable in and see if it continues to lose the IP address? If it's stable then it's probably the wireless conenction, if it's not then it might be something wrong with the computer.
kurlymunky 15-11-2006, 16:53 Might seem like a silly question but does it lose the connection at random times or is it every 8 minutes? Get your stop watch out

I did say I dont speak or understand computer language!

The network at present is just running my laptop (it also runs my sons desktop but its out of bounds right now because hes grounded!) I have no idea about IP address's or if my router gives them out? I have been having to use a cable from the router to the laptop to re-connect and it takes AGES to mess around trying to connect, but once im online and whilst im using it, its ok but as soon as i sign off .... i have trouble re-connecting to the router again. I dont think its the computer thats at fault (just its operator:( ) because its quite new.
silent_bob 20-11-2006, 01:15 Hi
Did you manage to fix the problems with your router
If not I may be able to help
Cheers
To secure your wireless network you need to enable "WPA" or "WEP" encryption on your Linksys Wireless Router and also install the key on your laptop. Don't use an "open key" as this doesn't secure the network, it needs to be a "shared key".
Have a read of the manual and see if you can manage to enable one of these.
On the IP dropping, sounds like a weak signal or digital noise or interference. If you have any other wireless devices in your home, digital cordless telephones, short range digital tv trasmiters etc turn all of these off before connecting to the network and see if this helps.
My digital TV transmitters have to be turned off for my wife's laptop to connect but my laptop works fine regardless.
