Recommend a cheap but good sewing machine?

Recommended Posts

i've decided it's time to invest in a simple machine for a simple person - all i'm interested in at the mo is something for hemming and constructing the occasional item of children's clothing, and patching up some otherwise healthy adult clothes. should i be able to get something decent for less than £100? something that feeds the cloth through well and doesn't tangle easily.

could anyone suggest something, and maybe even direct me to a good website for buying things?

thanks,

bc

I bought mine from Dunelm about a month ago. They had a small range (three or four) of Brother machines. The top of the range one was £200-something and I think the one at the lower end was around the £100 mark.

I'm thoroughly impressed with my machine. It's solid, stitches well, has a drop-in bobbin whatsit (instead of one you have to fiddle at the front of the machine with). It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of a more expensive machine, but it does what I need it to do and it does it well.

EDIT: Here's the link.

You could also try putting a advert on here under the wanted section of the classifieds.

I got a really good modern machine this way for £10!

Look at Brother or Janome really - both decent makes with a good reputation. JL have both makes and the ladies there will demo them for you to make sure they have everything you want.
