I'm looking at some of the homesteading properties and a couple I have seen in Shirecliffe have been in fairly leafy lil streets (Longly Ave West just before it becomes Norwood and Musgrave Crescent) and looked quite reasonable. However I have no idea what the area is like - anyone live out that way and have any advice / horror stories about the area?

I don't know too much about the area but when we looked at those Ben Bailey Houses on Shirecliffe Road a couple of years ago we had an environmental survey done as they were fairly close to Parkwood tip. Ultimately we didn't buy round there because of it - we could actually smell the tip and that was in February! However, that house was very close and that wouldn't apply to those further away.

Friends who used to live across the road from us moved further down on Shirecliffe and I don't think they have had any problem.

I would be inclined to say check on the location of the tip in relation to the house as I think part of Musgrave also comes close to it.

Sound advice from Wendy.

EDN, check out this this (http://www.multimap.com/map/photo.cgi?client=public&X=435000&Y=390500&width=500&height=310&gride=&gridn=&srec=0&coordsys=gb&db=&pc=&zm=0&scale=10000&down.x=187&down.y=6) multimap. Musgrave Crescent in the top right; Parkwood toxic waste dump in the bottom left.

Err...I advise you scroll down a page on the map, just to see how big the dump really is...

Neil,

I've recently moved to Longley - pretty near Shirecliffe.

Assuming you are not that near the dump I'd say its a nice area.
I know that lots of people wouldn't touch the area with 10 foot pole (or a 3 mile pole come to that! but they are just snobs (and ignorant ones at that)

I'm not complaining cos I wouldn't have been able to affor it if it was a "trendy" area.

Scrolled down ages and still couldnt find Barnsley!!

Anyway I live on the top of the hill on the Ben Bailey estate. Have been there 2 1/2 years and have had no problems at all. Great views, fantastic dog walking trails and great neighbours.

With regards to the tip, I've smelt it maybe 2/3 times since we've been there so cant really complain.

The health scaremongerers seem to forget that the tip is very near town so at some point most of Sheffield have probably inhaled whatever it was they used to tip there (Only household waste now).

My one reservation though is the amount of scrotes that hang about the shops halfway up Shirecliffe Road. Never had trouble though but they could put some people off.

I'm glad to hear that has improved they are lovely houses. It was just over 2 and 1/2 years since we were going to buy one.

I wasn't trying to cause a scare just advising they check the position of the house. BTW the house we were going to buy was less than 250 metres from the edge of the tip so it was very close - are you further away? I know when we looked at the showhomes we didn't notice anything, so it could just be confined to a limited area.

Anyhow, as I've already said I'm pleased to hear that it has improved.

There has been so much attention on the people that live at Shirecliffe that no-one else in Sheffield seems to have been considered.

The winds that whistle over Shirecliffe hill sometimes are enough to carry toxic dust miles and miles. If you're gonna get it, you are gonna get it - no escaping this stuff!! Plus remember that because it so windy here - all the time - the dust aint gonna settle, it will get carried untill the wind dies - perhaps in the leafy glades of West Sheffield!!

There was a programme last year - House Trapped - that showed a woman on there trying to sell her house but not being very hopeful due to the location. The producers didnt think to look round the rest of the estate or speak to other residents.

These house are snapped up in no time. We've even had people putting flyers throught the letterbox asking if they can buy our house!! And the prices have doubled in 2 years.

I just get really cheesed off when people say "ooer Shirecliffe - you wouldnt get me living there" without looking into the wider picture.

I used to work on Shirecliffe tip the council bit,not Parkwood Springs a long time ago (12yrs).Someone has said that only domestic household waste is tipped on there now.I don`t know but I very much doubt it,anyway the damage has already been done with what has been tipped there in the past.

If you are interested in homesteading on Shirecliffe (or Parson Cross or Foxhill) keep in touch with Haybrooks Estate Agents in Hillsborough who handle the sales. Prices have increased greatly over the last year but with the discount of £12,500 given on homesteading properties they are still a bargain even taking into account the repairs you will have to carry out.

I wouldn't want to live near the landfill - I've done a lot of campaigning and research into that place.
I was the one who discovered that clean-up waste from the Bolsover TCP accident had been deposited there (UK's worst ever dioxin contamination) and I also blew the whistle on the fact that fly-ash (a highly toxic byproduct of incinerators) was being shipped there from London. Its true that not just Shirecliffe will get any dust or gas blown off the site, but it will (and does) get the most concentrated amounts.

I'm not unconcerned with the negative image this gives of Shirecliffe, and it upsets me when protesters are labelled as 'scaremongers'. The precise reason we do our work is because we care about the place and its people.

At least for myself, part of what I do is to scare people, because I have no choice. I don't lie or exaggerate, I just tell people the facts, and the facts are scary. Sorry if you would rather see your house price go up and keep your head in the sand, but everyone has a right to know the dangers (potentential or actual) that place poses, and you're not going to find that out from the Council, Environment Agency or the owners (now Viridor).

And just because you can't smell it, doesn't mean its not there.
