View Full Version : Do you Tip?
Are you a tipper? Are you generous and tip regardless or only tip for good service? How much is a reasonable tip? What types of professions do you tip? Do you not believe in tipping and think that it's a luxury not deserved?
Phanerothyme 01-07-2003, 01:08 restaurants 10-15% depending on level of service. Shocking service, no tip.
Taxis, usually round up to nearest £5 but again, bad drive - exact money.
Someone opens door for me at hotel, gets a smile.
I always tip cash to the staff in question, never on the card or cheque - staff will rarely see it.
We always tip taxi drivers 16% if they charge the right price, otherwise they get the exact money, also we tip waiters in the hotel on holiday, if they are pleasant, if not we don't.
Usually, there is no problem as most people providing a service are very nice and we always talk and have a joke with everyone.
DaBouncer 01-07-2003, 08:20 I tip restaurant staff between 10-15% depending on service and if the service is bad no tip.
If the restaurant has a 'service charge' added to the bill I don't tip as they have had the cheek to include it from the outset.
Hairdressers I tip about 10% (although not anymore cos now my fiancee shaves my head)!
I round taxi drivers fair up to nearest whatever the price is: E.g. Fair = £8.50 Price I pay = £10
Fair = £12.50 Price I pay = £15
If the taxi journey is quite frankly s**t then the payment is exact!
I don't tip McD's but I do put change into their charity box!
kittykat 01-07-2003, 10:45 I leave about 1.50 in small change so it looks like more just as to not look tight.
No1 tips me when i serve them in the shop i work in, im just doing my job and they expect me to be polite - as far as im concerned so are waitresses/taxi drivers etc. If they dont earn enough to start with then leave but im sure they dont earn any less than shopworkers do.
Tony Ruscoe 01-07-2003, 11:54 If I've had a good meal & good service at a restaurant I'll tip around 10%. Again - always in cash as staff never see it if it's put on the credit card.
I'll rarely tip taxi drivers because most of them (in my experience) drive like maniacs, take detours and aren't that polite. On the rare occasion where I get a polite, chatty taxi driver who drives carefully and takes the quickest route, I normally round up to the nearest pound or two.
Sometimes I tip the barber/hairdresser if I'm particularly pleased with my haircut. Not much - around 50p.

Why 16%? :?
....now I don't see why people tip..........I think its very American...
If people tip because the person is in a low paid job then it is the persons choice for doing the job they do........I wish I could get tipped for my job, cuz I'd make a right packet

I wouldn't say it's someone choice to be earning a low wage. Perhaps they are under paid in the industry they work.

...perhaps but that means that whoever is responsible for their wages, should increase them .....its not up to the customer, to subidise someones income....I work hard in my job but never get tipped
Tony Ruscoe 03-07-2003, 07:55 I think it's down to service, not subsidising poor income.
For example, a waiter / waitress could just plod along doing their job without going beyond what they actually have to do.
Doing that, hardly anyone would tip them. If they provided a good service, went out of their way to help you and make it a more pleasant experience (and showed a friendly smile, etc.) then people would be likely to tip.

I agree, but certain large companies like to take massive profits and keep their staff below the poverty line. Somethings got to be wrong when the government have to top up these low wages with family credits. Basically it shows how much clout the top companies have with the goverment to dictate that they can pay low wages and the government has to top them up.
costessey 04-07-2003, 00:00 i sometimes tip rubbish into the neighbours garden if the're not about

Why does no-one ever think to tip a barman. I'm working in a hotel for the summer, but rarely get tipped.
waxy chuff 04-07-2003, 15:06 I used to earn bucketloads when I worked at the Unit. All Points North on a Saturday - came home with forty odd quid in tips.
HINT: when people ask if you want a drink (given that the conscientious among us cannot drink whilst working) just put the money away for later.
Moon Maiden 04-07-2003, 15:10 We generally tip Taxi drivers up to a £5 if they help us with the shopping.
We tip the Pizza delivery when we order too cos they are really nice people, with excellent service and food! :D
In restaurants my hubby deals with a tip, but we generally only tip if we have enjoyed ourselves. Biggest tip we left was in a carvery in Scarborough - the owner came out and entertained the kids it was really fun for everyone in the restaurant.

There's two ways you could get tips for sure:
1. Be a better barman...
2. Grow breasts and wear short skirts & tight tops...
Your choice.
