View Full Version : What gets/keeps you motivated?
_Kirsty_ 12-11-2006, 12:33 Im having trouble getting back to the gym. I just cant get motivated.
Since breaking up with my ex and moving out of my parents, all i want to do is go home and doss about.
Iv had a really lazy weekend, promising myself that as from tomorrow (Monday) im going to go back to the gym 4/5 times a week and start eating healthy again, cut down drinking on weeknights etc. But iv got this feeling that when tomorrow comes, il not want to go to the gym... and if i dont feel motivated when i do go, il not stay long... go home and eat something unhealthy.
Help! What do you do to get/keep you motivated? What pushes you to go to the gym?
Kirsty x
Even if I was fit enough I’d never bother with any gymnasium. I’ve noticed their car parks are full during their hours, so what’s the point? It’s like ordering fish, chips and peas together with a diet coke!
Take up either swimming or horse-riding. Both exercise all your muscles. Failing that, run all the way to the gym, turn round and run all the way home; it’ll keep you fit and healthy without the expense.
Kirsty- keep an old pair of trousers that you can't fit into any more and try them regularly, it's a fabulous motivator.
Jabberwocky 12-11-2006, 13:18 After a long layoff I promised myself a workout with weights this afternoon, but... and I AM going to do it, but...
Its hard to get back into the swing of things isnt it? I find its easier to make excuses for myself than to actually get up and do something.

Iv got a few pairs of trousers I cant fit into actually! Two pairs that were waaaay too small for me that i can get into comfortably now. I did lose a stone and half but i think iv put the half back on- which is making me feel a bit crappy.

Thats exactly what im doing lately, making excuses.
Thing is, iv done all my washing today, will do the ironing later and I havent got the internet at my house (im at parents atm) so i havent really got an excuse not to exercise tomorrow.

Devine22 30-11-2006, 09:00 Start up a gym meet thread!!!
lizzmobile 30-11-2006, 09:11 Kirsty, I did an RSA aerobics teaching course when I lived in London, and it was strongly advised not to exercise more than 3 times a week to give your body time to adapt to what you had put it through. You might fiind this a bit more manageable, and might help you stay motivated if you don't make it 5 times.
SupraSteve 30-11-2006, 09:16 I set myself a challenge or a target, then I've got something I want to achieve, and progress I can watch as I make little steps towards hitting it which is also encouraging.
It needen't be something mental, but my last one was to do a sprint distance triathlon. I used to go to teh gym 3~4 times a week, and swim 4 times a week. Since then I've hardly been and I am starting to motivate myself again by thinking about the next race which would be in May.... now is the time to start training if I want to beat my time!
It could just be something simple though like lose half a stone (and the next challenge is to lose another, or whatever). The key is; don't make it unachievable else you'll give up, and make sure it's comething you actually want to achieve. Good luck! :)

Yes as above if you have a decent session you need to give your body chance to recover else you will feel drained.
_Kirsty_ 30-11-2006, 11:33 Thanks everyone, you'v been great help.
Having read Steve's post about setting targets, i think im going to do that.
I did lose a stone and half from Jan-August this year... but i think its slowley piling back on :( and i did that because i had my ex's support, he was losing weight too so we helped eachother.
So im going to set myself a target of losing half a stone in the next few weeks, cut back on all the rubbish iv been eating and start back at the gym on Sunday.
Il update this thread every so-often to tell you how im getting on- hopefully it might inspire other people to do it too
Thanks again.

I don't go to the gym either, I have a great work out routine at home that keeps me in shape and I don't have everybody watching me do my silly exercise face lol, and I can do it to my own music and just feel more comfortable! Everybody's different though, I can see why people go to the gym but its not for me!
Ways to keep me motivated are to think about if somebody has mentioned that I look 'curvier' or saying I have a 'big bum'.
Also I nicked a pair of my boyfriend's combats just to relax and pretend I'm a skater chick in (which I'm so not) and he said how they were baggy on him, but when I tried them on they were a bit tight! And I can't have a bigger waist than him, its just wrong!
So I use them to judge whether I'm slim or not and if they're tight then I do like a gazillion sit-ups :hihi:
the_mandarin 30-11-2006, 12:12 I get motivated simply by stepping into the gym. That could perhaps be because I cannot go there everyday due to my work schedule and try to make the most of it whenever I do get a chance.

Im gunna try going 3 times a week as recommended by lizzmobile. Theres no way I can go back to my 5 times a week workout, not straight away. Plus, iv got too much on at the moment.
Aparently the gym's are packed after xmas until about March... that should be fun

Yep, all the 'New Year Resolutions' people decide they're going to do something about their fitness. Most don't make it past 6 weeks. ;)
BrainThrust 30-11-2006, 13:26 Oooh I'm having trouble doing ANYTHING at the moment!
Ijust can't seem to get out of bed unless I absolutely have to, I'm sleeping 12 hours a day without realising, doing little or no exercise and I just can't shake myself out of it!
I think I need help :(
