Does anyone know of any Architecture Practices that provide placements for Part One (Post-Degree) Architecture students? Any help would be much appreciated!

Most do, so write into all of them in the phone book. Don't expect much in the way of wages though.

Hadfield Cawkwell Davidson on Broomgrove Rd would be a good starting point..they are crying out for staff. Bond Bryan in Crookes are a good bet as well but like Tony says expect to get poorly paid. HLM are looking for staff as well.

David Lewis Associates Architects was advertising to fill another full time position a month ago. They might need someone to bridge a gap? Didn't see the ad this month, though, and they do seem a bit specialist ie: very, very posh jobs only.

HLM are looking for staff as well. Great on the CV. Good solid old practice that are very commercial and well respected technically, but don't expect to work on anything other than dull as dishwater architecture! Contact Mike Brearley.

Interesting work, especially in the education sector. Also involved in the Sun International casino at Don Valley along with the Attercliffe Village project- should be fascinating. Contact John Bond.

Great people, great architecture, and getting back to their roots after recent commercial ups and downs. They would be my pick every day as a year out student. Contact Nick Beecroft.

Mike Brierley has lost a bit of..how can I put it kindly??..standing within HCD. Nigel Morley is probably a safer bet and if you work with him you ar emore likely to get a wider range of projects to work on. The other part of HCD tend to concentrate on Boots and Sainsbury's work.
I'd tend to agree with Tony (again) and go for HLM primarily.
Maybe even try BDP in Sheffield if you want a high profile practice.
There is also Axis Architecture in town...Howard Fry

I've got a huge amount of respect for Axis, but they seem to have become a bit of a factory of late, and the architecture has suffered.

Never heard of them - any more info?

You could also try:
Studio 1 - up and coming in the style of HLM. Contact Chas Kelsey.
BDP - gone off the map in Sheffield for some reason but historically a good firm.

The thing to remember about your year out is that you need to either aim for high design (built or not) or high technical ability (that gets built). Anything inbetween won't mean much.

Also, put aside your pretensions that you've got an architecture degree. You will probably find yourself assigned to a 20 year old technician who will probably have to teach you how to draw properly before letting you loose on a real building ;).

Tony, I don't know much about David Lewis Associates. But I've hunted down the ad and checking them out now...

There's not much info. They're not really local, by the looks of it. It says it's a medium practice "located in the beautiful Peak District". They have work all over the place, mostly down South. Looks like they work on historic houses and new build in sensitive areas, and as I thought, posh stuff.

Oh goodness- I've just seen their client list!

:o

OK, very posh stuff.

Actually, I'm a bit of an architecture freak myself. Its like a hobby. I've collect a lot of books on architecture. I wish Sheffield had just a little more decent architecture. I would change my career if I could afford to take 7 years off, so good luck on your placement Emmaleigh. Let us know how you get on.
