.....Can someone explain the rivalry between Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United fans...and also why are the pubs they all drink in, segragated? .....can't all fans of football teams just get on and not dislike eachother so much?

They do get along when it's world cup time!
Read the book: Blades Business Crew by Steve Cowens, it explains a lot about the rivalry and links between different firms around the UK.

I think football rivalry is a strange one to explain sometimes. I'm a mad Manchester United fan (please don't send me barrages of abuse, I'm a bit bored of it! I'm not from Sheffield, I'm originally from Macclesfield which is near Manchester... OK?!! :D )

We have a huge rivalry with Liverpool, Leeds and of course Man City. With teams from the same city, like Manchester United and Manchester City (and I suppose Wednesday and United?) the rivalry can be based on wanting to be the best "on your home turf". You work with and sometimes live next-door etc to fans of the local opposition so you have to put up with stick and banter when you lose to them. And if they haven't beaten you for a while then this stick can go on for months, believe me!

Sometimes it's a bit crazy like when Leeds fans do the Munich aeroplane thing (waving arms around in the air to imitate a plane which is out of control), which they know will wind up Manchester United fans. So we sing about hating Leeds s**m and it just goes on and on! Liverpool fans sing something about hating United so we sing about the "Liverpool slums"... It's sometimes just not based on anything sensible! Then you might just get ignorant, prejudiced people who genuinely hate rival opposition teams and fans and I don't understand that... Thankfully I haven't come across too many like that. When it comes down to it I hope that most football fans just love the sport and the rivalry just adds a bit of spice and excitement! Ultimately you want your team to be the most successful. So for (Manchester) United fans that means catching up with, and passing the number of trophies the Liverpool have won...

Sometimes you just sing stuff for a bit of a laugh! I remember last season when West Ham came to Old Trafford in the FA Cup (for their 6-0 thrashing!) they started waving their arms in the air singing "Let's all do a Barthez, let's all do a Barthez, na na na na. Na na na na" which was a mickey take of the season before when Barthez stood like the statue of Liberty when de Canio scored. I was in the Stretford End and I lot of (Manchester) United fans, including me, started laughing!

I think for different people the rivalry can be based on slightly different reasons. These are mine!

Anyway, are you still with me? Or have I sent you to sleep?!

I'm with ya, hmm football rivalry happens all over the world but some take it far more seriously than others. I'm a football fan with some bitter rivals but I am friends with a number of fans from rival clubs. For me it's more that I want their team to do badly than any ill will towards the fans themselves. That said I do still sing all the songs :-)

Me too: the majority of my footie liking mates are Liverpool fans! And I certainly don't have any ill will towards the fans either. I've met some very nice Scousers! ;)

So why is it specifically that you want the rival teams to do badly? Is it along the lines of what I've put about wanting your team to be the best on your "home turf"? If you don't win any trophies at least you have the consolation of being the "best" in your part of the country?

I think football rivalry starts when we are children, it's natural for kids. Then we just never grow up!
But it's all in fun and adds to the excitment.
Come on you Owls!!!!!!!

I've always been a Blades fan, but since moving away from Sheffield i've wanted both teams to do well.

Now living in Manchester I just want City to do well and United to go down the pan! I once saw Beckham in a petrol Station at Salford Quays and he looked like a muppet from a Vodafone sales stand with the crap he was dressed in!

Its all a bit strange to me cos i,m neutral.

I don't support either but then I ain't originally from round here so I "kept" my old team from back home (Crewe Alex).

Get to see em get stuffed by the Blades once a year, maybe Wedsnesday can give em a game if they go up?

Because it's a tribal thing madowl......and it depends on where you live and who your family/friends support when you first make your affiliation to one particular team. Sure you can change, but I wonder how many people have said, Hey! Liverpool have just won the cup so I'm going to change and start being a supporter!? Nah, it's a loyalty issue.......loyalty to those around you, as well to the guys on the pitch.

Men are tribal beings - being part of a tribe (team) with all the trappings (scarves, emblems, chants, colours etc) makes them feel like they belong. Belonging to two tribes is not the same.

Who'd want to set themself apart from those around him?

Look at your own name! You don't call yourself madsheffieldfootiesupporter do you? That would make you a member of neither tribe! (not to mention pretty weird.......)

We're SUFC supporters as it happens - tho my nephews in the north are SWFC - but I do wish your team all the best today.

Maybe that's what we should do? Have a team to support for day-to-day stuff, but get behind either Sheffield team whenever it counts?

All the best, m8e!

You can't support both... you just can't!
You have to suffer all the defeats and knockback, pain and sneers from work colleagues (who will all be apologising on Tuesday I can tell you). But because you do and because you don't become a glory supporter it makes days like today all the more thrilling!

Me and my (yet to be born) baby were on the edge of our seat.

Of course you can support both but not when they're playing against each other. I've supported United since I was a pre-teen but this hasn't stopped me rooting for Wednesday on occasion. I took my eldest son downtown when Wednesday lost out to Everton in the Cup Final of 196? and they had a parade for them. If United is not involved in any Wednesday result I will support them all the way. Today was a case in point. I had to listen to the game on my computer but I was there in spirit. Maybe perspective becomes a little clearer when things are viewed from a few thousand miles away. In any case it was a great win but I hope United take them apart next season.

You can't support both and if you think you can then your not a true football fan. Wednesday and United are what gives sheffield our edge becuase we have some wars in the past both on and off the pitch.

Don't know if you remember this but 4 or 5 years ago when wednesday was in fear of going in to administraion theres was a rumour going round that wednesday and united would join togeather, I asked my mates (who are all blades) what they would do and they said they could and would never accept it. I have to agree.

This to all the blade pigs out there wednesday are back and just wait untill we see geary, quinn and bromby. Traitors!!

Unlike some Blades fans, i don't 'hate' the Owls. My best friend is a devoted Wednesday fan and we have never argued about our teams. Instead we discuss our teams trials and tribulations.

Now when i see/hear the load of b******s posted below, i get rather aggrieved. I don't know why the Wendy fans come out with such 'tripe'

Rivalry is what makes sport what it is, what gives it a little extra bite, and its not just Sheffield. Liverpool/Everton, Rangers/Celtics. ManU/ManC, Yankees/Redsox, whatever.

Anyone who needs the reason explaining to them won't understand.
Anyone who supports both is neither a Wednesday or United fan.
Anyone who says that they are both from sheffield misses the point
And to anyone who wants to go along to watch the matches next season to see what all the fuss is about don't bother there won't be enough tickets for those that know which side they support

Don't look for any rational comments regarding the two teams

There are two things in life you cannot alter.
Your date of birth and the team you support.

Perhaps it's a genetic thing I don't know.

In days gone by, a Wednesday supporter wouldn't eat streaky bacon cos of the red and white stripes and a Unitedite would only reluctantly go on a corporation bus cos they were blue and white (well cream really but near enough).

Can't understand these people who claim to have an allegiance to both United and that other lot.

Anyway, well done Wednesday for getting promotion.
You're really going to be a force to be reckoned with, phew, needed extra time to finish off the giants from Hartlepool.
More points for United.

What did the "SLEEPING GIANTS" from Sheffield 6 win ?
OOOHHH thats right the DIVISION 2 play-offs..They got to Extra time against Mighty Hartlepool on a :suspect: penalty and then managed to beat 10 men the rest of the way and now as the Sheffield Stir said "are back with the BIG BOYS" who i am assuming they mean the Mighty Blades
Should give us an easy 6 points in our promotion push , and the sleeping giants will be a yo-yo team or at best a mediocre mid table team ...Carrying on like they won the Champions league :D
You can only support one team in one city and its usually what team your Dad brought you up watching ..Theres been many nights i could have strangled the old bloke but, being a Blade is what its all about. The Blades fans have more fun, have a better sense of humour and stick with the Red and White Wizzzzards through thick and thin ...

The great rivalry used to be Toronto Mapleleafs against the Montreal Canadiens. But of course the Habs were always vastly superior (24 Stanley cups) Neither of them are much cop today, that's if they ever start playing again. Right now I'm supporting AHL in the season. Good hockey at a reasonable price.

personally, i despise the grand majority of wednesday fans, mainly because they are so smug! ok, so they were above us for most of the last century but since they were relegated in 000, they must have only been above us in the league structure on two or three occasions, and that was only when we were v poor in 2001/02.

that said, i was sort of cheering for them on sunday, although i would have liked to see hartlepool win just to wipe the arogant looks of the wednesday fans faces.

the perfect situation for me would be for wednesday and united to both be near the top of the premiership etc, so the rivalry would be similar to what inter and ac milan fans have, with champions league games between the two teams and so on.

One thing that makes me laugh is the bitterness we feel when the other (sheff) team does well, i dont care if utd beat us home, and away next season as long as wednesday are still in that league at the end of the season, we have to work hard to get whan we want and so do the blades, are the owls or blades, ready for the prem? No. wednesday i think may be ready in a bout 4-5 seasons if were lucky to build a good team.. utd on the other hand to me need a new manager i think mr w has had his best day as manager and a change is needed to fresh things up, hes done well, but i dont think hes the man for the prem for them. If utd did get to the prem would i be bitter... Yes i bloody would but at the same time id be glad a sheffield team did well, but in no way would i ever go and support them. As for the utd fans that call us wednesday fans "wendy" well good luck to them too, i just wounder what else they love is as blunt as the team they support?:heyhey:

Im suprised nobody has said it, but the rivalry has a more historical route, between steelworkers and tradesmen.

Sheffield United were founded as a team of steelworkers, whereas sheffield wednesday were shopworkers, shopowners etc (Might be wrong here but the Wednesday part might be a reference to having wednesday off to play football as people ceased trading that day - might be wrong)

Lots of other rivalries, such as celtic and rangers and Man U and Man City are deeply routed between Catholics and Protestants.

But the bigges factor in the rivalry between wendesday and united, is the sheffield wednesday fans have always took exception to the foul stench of pigsmuck that has omitted from Bramall Lane.

We are Wednesday, We are Wednesday, Sturrock is our King.

On the up!!!!!!!!

Let's get this in perspective.
That lot from Sheff 6 went belly up and nosedived to the old Div 3, difficult thing to do but they managed it all the same.

Eventually crawled into the play offs and beat 10 man Hartlepool with a penalty in extra time. Fact.
If this is being on the bl**dy up then next season should be very amusing, for United that is.

Who wants to start a book on their excuses for being relegated?

Getting back to what this thread is about:
RIVALRY: you are a blue or red in this city, when it comes to football, we love to hate each other and love it when the other team does terrible, when wednesday went down the blunts were a happy lot, when wednesday went up the blunts are not a happy lot. why? cos they dont like us. When we beat them in the semi-final we were a good team, things have just been bad since, but hopefully things will now start to turn around for the wednesday and build team that can play against the best in england. Utd to me have always been the underdogs but do! have a better record than we do on our own turf (sheff), i dont take the wed v blunt games to be too important, anything can happen in these heated games i like to judge a team on the way they play over the whole season, and wednesday have been long over due some good luck as there has been some right crap for our money over the last couple of seasons, the blunts were really unlucky with what happened with the games with Arse, (another team i dont like, you know why) i think they should have won, i was pleased that the arse won but at the same time felt the blunts should have won it, yes i watched it. but support them?? NEVER. ALL THE BEST TO BLUNTS AND WEDNESDAY NEXT SEASON.

as you say you can take the blunt from sheffield but not the sheffield from the blunt, bye.

:hihi: :hihi:
On the up :hihi: Enjoy it before the down next season ...
Yep you can take the Blade from Sheffield and place him in paradise (Canada) same as the Piggy who came here and wrote a book , Actually had many beers with the lad and he was at my wedding when i got remarried , so Blades and Pigs can get along only 3,000 miles away from Sheffield...
Now a quote from your other post

"hopefully things will now start to turn around for the wednesday and build team that can play against the best in england"
Glad you consider Sheff Utd among the best in England because thats who you are playing next year

I also know all the wendy think you are a massive club and have a god given right to be in the premiership (ala Man city )so until your alarm clock goes off in the morning and wakes you up , you can dream about wendy playing the Chelskis, moan u's and arsenals etc
:loopy: Its going to be a long long time for you lot, with the teams we have had the past few years and failed to get promotion you lot have no chance and believe me it gets tougher and tougher every year to get out of this division.
And MadFowl please stop this I dont care about Pigs Vs Blades matches and dont take them seriously , dont make me :hihi:

??? why would i make you laugh about not taking wed v blunts seriously, yep its a big game for both teams but its only two games, win or lose its the start to the end of a season as a whole that i care about, its no good being great at the start and failing at the end, (as you blunts have done this season) you have to be good from the first kick off to the last whistle. for me you could have the 6 points aslong as we are still in the championship at the end of the season, and yes i do consider utd to be among the better teams in the championship, and yes we are a massive club, with a much bigger fan base than utd, but we like you will have to play hard and win the right to play in the prem, as you know the championship is a hard place to get out of, (unless you go down) i have had a season ticket at hillsbrough for over 23 years and only missed 19 matches at home league or cup, i think i have the right to choose what matters to me the most, 6 point have them. its where you finish at the end. And i too have mates that go to the lane, and your point is??
yours madowl not foul who made you the ref?

Sheffield United are the pigs,
I just wish that they didn't exist,
Their ground is like a cabbage patch!
their team is really crap to watch,
Their deckchair shirts and gypo fans
Look like some medieval clan!

The chav's that support this mutley crew
are god damn ugly - through and through!
They can't kick a ball and try to play footy
whilst their fans sing about a greasy chip butty.

They have always been in the shadow
and have always - tried to follow
their wiser, greater neighbours who -
play at Hillsborough in dazzling blue
The team that teaches them how to play
Sheffields number 1 - that is Wednesday!!

Rather than get involved in childish comments I thought I would just mention how far fans will go in their dislike for the opposition. In the mid80s I had a personal reason for disliking a certain Lee Chapman. One night I saw him in a pub (nr the cathedral) and thought it was the ideal chance to give him the beating he deserved;luckily (for him) my friends stopped me.A few months later Weallateleeds played at Hillsbro'(on TV) and won 6-1 with Chapman scoring-I think-4 goals. On that day I totally forgot about my dislike for him.I think most Blades would only cheer the Fowls on in a game if the result helped us in gaining promotion or avoiding the drop.I admit they are the bigger club(support wise)...obviously there are more gullible people in Sheffield 6.

You are obviously a blunt. Can't spell, thick and you probably smell like the tramp that you all are. Your a crappy little supporter of a crappy little club with crappy small support in a crappy area of Sheffield. That pretty sums up wednesdayites feelings toward your sad little existence of what it must be like to be a blunt.

If YOU'RE going to be critical of someones spelling, maybe you should check YOUR grammar. There is a difference between "your" and "you're"
