What did anyone think of Channel 4's new transatlantic drama?
Unfortunately I missed the middle part (doh!) as I was on the phone.
At first the acting seemed a bit cringeworthy, the Americans seemed like they were putting their accents on, even though they are American!
But it definitely picked up and the acting improved. The ending was a bit vague but I'm intrigued and will probably watch it next week.
The bit I saw of it was singularly unimpressive.
I assume they're after the 'This Life' audience. The dialogue was pretty poor and quite cliched. The characters didn't really engage me, and the acting was 'mannered' if that makes sense.
The whole conceit of London and New York being suburbs of the same metropolis that just happen to be separated by a 3000 mile wide duck pond isn't something that means anything to me - and probably doesn't mean much to most people who live in London and New York and DON'T have the frequent flier miles....

I quite liked it, but then I'm a sucker for anything filmed in New York, I'm kind of obsessed with the place. The photography was stunning (they even managed to make London look nice!).
The script was pretty clunky though (as if anyone from New York would leave their bag unattended to in another big city) and it relied a bit too much on coincidences for my liking. That poor guy from Teachers needs a bit more to do as well, I'm wondering what the point of his character is.
Taped last night's though and haven't watched it so it may get better. It suffers by being on at the same time as The Sopranos on E4 (now there's a proper drama!).
noseyrosie 01-09-2004, 22:20 I thought it was awful, and how the hell does that guy afford to keep travelling back and forth. I also noticed he never seems to be jet lagged or anything, even though london - new york is about 12 hours!!! Stupid guff.
I think he's meant to be a stockbroker so is probably stupidly rich but I agree it's pretty unbelievable. The jet lag thing is certainly harder to explain. Watched this week's on video last night, dear me where on earth did they get that guy who plays Edie's ex-boyfriend? He makes the acting in Hollyoaks look good!!
genesiscouch 02-09-2004, 18:13 Flying direct is 7 1/2 hours LHR -> JFK and 7 hours JFK -> LHR. The time change is 5 hours.
I haven't seen the show but I'm assuming the guy is flying for business? It's not as if he's paying for the tickets.
The business people who refer to NYLON work 80-90+ hour work weeks...a 5 hour time change is a minor factor in their well-being.

noseyrosie 02-09-2004, 19:45 I wouldn't say he was travelling for business, and I quote:
"You'd travel all the way from London to New York just to see me for a couple'hours?"
Dear me. What tripe.
andy1702 03-09-2004, 20:31 I'm afraid I'm not going to go along with the flow here! As someone who can't stand all those fuddy duddy old British style so-called dramas we get in unpalletable two and three hour chunks over on ITV, I was immensly impressed with C4's NY:LON.
At long last a British TV company have proved they can make something with a bit of style if they really try.
I guess I shouldn't be surprised really though. Channel 4 have always had a knack of picking up shows that are popular or groundbreaking. Meanwhile over on ITV we've got yet more borring old firemen in Steel River Blues, a kind of Londons burning but without having to pay a popular cast!
All in all, lets have less Frost, Morse and enforced visits to that Midsommer place and much more fun in the NY:LON style.
After all, TV is supposed to be entertaining!
Oh don't get me wrong, I am enjoying it and like you say it's better than 90% of UK drama. It just has some flaws, but I'll keep watching.
And the woman who plays Edie is *very* nice :-)
andy1702 08-09-2004, 19:07 Well, we've now had three installments of this trans-Atlantic tale of love.
According to the bods at Channel 4, there are another 4 shows to go.
After last night's part, we now know how they afford to jet backwards and forwards all the time. It's quite simple. They don't! Poor Edie is flat broke after buying her last ticket to the UK and I blaim it on her psycho ex-boyfriend who keeps going into the record shop and chasing all the customers away. Surely they can't afford to pay her with the down-turn in trade!!!!
So if you're not hooked on NY-LON yet, tune your TV to Channel 4 at 10 pm for the next four Tuesday nights.
cluelessmuff 20-09-2004, 15:23 Are we all watching the same programme?! Totally agree with noseyrosie! This programme is so awful it's funny. The acting is the worst i've ever seen. The bloke who plays Micheal is especially bad (where did they find this guy??). Monotony in delivering those (crap) lines to the highest level! He looks like he's just reading them from behind the camera. My housemates and I now watch it to laugh at how bad it is! Also has anyone actually noticed that in every scene at least one person is on the phone? No seriously, EVERY SCENE!! Lastly, if they're going to make a programme crap, at least put some good looking people in it! Channel 4 please sack the person who brought this to our screens (if he was serious in thinking it was good!). If it was a joke however, buy him/her a drink!
