View Full Version : Does anyone remember? (shoe shop on fargate)
wickedwitch 25-08-2004, 09:37 Does anyone remember the name of a shoe shop which was on Fargate in the 80's, it was around the same time as the Wham era.It had a glass floor with a train running underneath it. Knowone I know can remember the name and its driving us potty.
of Fargate was it?
I can remember Barratts and the Bargain Basement which was next to another shop.
wickedwitch 25-08-2004, 10:24 The shop was roughly somewhere inbetween River island clothing, although that may have still been Chelsea Girl at the time and what is now HSBC bank.
joestrummer 25-08-2004, 11:05 was it saxonne..or freeman,hardy,willis..
wickedwitch 25-08-2004, 12:09 No, sorry. It was only open for maybe a couple of years and everyone used to shop at Rebinas before it opened .They had nice shoes but a bit pricey
RoyalRegular 25-08-2004, 13:19 I remember an expensive shoe shop round about there-it was RAVEL. Don't remember a train though.
wickedwitch 25-08-2004, 13:27 Sorry it was,nt Ravel either. I dont even think it belonged to a chain. We're sure it had a glass and metal floor with toy train running underneath it
Was it Russell and Bromley by any chance?
wickedwitch 25-08-2004, 14:13 No it wasnt that either, like I said its driving us all potty
joestrummer 25-08-2004, 14:18 think it was called shucz(not sure on spelling)its now in orchard square...
wickedwitch 25-08-2004, 14:22 No ,Schu was on fargate before moving to orchard square but this was before then though the shop in question could have been where Schu was situated
It was the same shop, and I *think* it was the first incarnation of Schu.
wickedwitch 25-08-2004, 14:30 Nobody seems to think it was that.
wickedwitch 26-08-2004, 07:15 no it definatley wasnt Rebinas
was it called stylo's they had a shop on fargate or it could have been timpsons !
muddycoffee 28-12-2004, 09:36 I think it was Schuh. Which opened on fargate, until it got a better unit in orchard square.
A friend of mine's dad was involved with the shop fitting around the train set.
By the way Schuh is German for Shoe
wickedwitch 30-12-2004, 07:20 THANX FOR YOUR REPLIES BUT IT WASNT EITHER ALL MY CLAN CAN REMEMBER BOTH OF THESE SHOPS. WHEN THIS SHOP FIRST OPENED IT WAS REALLY NOVEL IT'S FLOOR WAS PARTLY GLASS AND IT HAD A TRAIN RUNNING UNDERNEATH IT . THE TIME WAS AROUND EARLY TO MID EIGHTIES, WHAM ERA. NOT SURE WETHER JEANERY WAS NEXT DOOR OR WETHER IT BECAME THIS SHOP. THE SHOE SHOP WAS'NT PART OF A CHAIN AND IT WASNT OPEN THAT LONG.
I'm sure before Schuh was there it was a Clarkes.

I too believed it was Schuh, before it became a chain. I remember being surprised to see one open in Liverpool, because I thought it was a Sheffield independant store.
There is one in every major shopping centre now, but in the eighties it was a very specialist shop. Pricey, but very individual (hang on, that's what they still do!)
I'm a boots addict, by the way. Shoe shops are my obsession.
Okay, having read this (http://www.schuhstore.co.uk/about/company.html) it wasn't what we know as Schuh now, but I still believe that the shop was called Schuh. After all, it's a bit of an obvious name for a shoe shop. Hardly a coincidence.
There's a shoe shop in this pic (http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.nimo118.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/img/CGS59YorksBank40_jpeg.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.nimo118.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/Site/New%2520Photos%2520Page.htm&h=64&w=100&sz=3&tbnid=j2zCPU2bQZ4J:&tbnh=49&tbnw=76&start=39&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dsheffield%2Bfargate%2B%26start%3D20%2 6hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26newwindow%3D1%26sa%3DN) but it's earlier than you were asking about
rebina was at the back of the dove n rainbow wasn't it
Sam Miguel 21-01-2005, 18:18 I worked for then British Shoe Corporation around 1984, this comprised of Saxone, Dolcis, FHW, Curtess, Manfield and one or two others.
I was based at Saxone which was situated in the building on Fargate that now is the Halifax Bank.
To answer everyone's question: Dolcis was on Fargate on the right-hand side near the top as you walked up.
Just before the entrance to Orchard Square

It was definately Ravel! My company managed the premises at the time and they were the last occupant before it became an Anne Summers outlet.
The premise was owned by Clarkes and had formally been their shop.

I remember the shop you mean, in fact I went to the opening of it. It was opened by an actor from Brookside, who I was in love with at the time but who's name escapes me now.
I thought it was Schuh, but could be wrong.

I tell you all, the last time it was a shoe shop was around the turn of the decade 1980's -90's and it was Ravels at the time. I went in when it was vacant and that was the livery displayed within. It's also on the property management register as such
Was there a shoe shop called Jaegers in Fargate, manageress Marjorie Elwood, friend of my parents? The shop probably closed about 35 years ago when she retired.

Merry_Legs 22-06-2007, 15:42 Hiya I remember this shop - just down from chelsea girlit definitely wasn't Schuh. It was around 1987 and used to sell Doc Martin boots and shoes, It had a toy train running round a track and a hologram of Siouxie Sioux in the floor, it was a great shop but it was only there for a year or so. Sorry, don't remember the name though.
PS I do realise this is an old thread!!
There was a shoe shop on Fargate called Sasha, they also had a type of party plan outlet which my friend did part time for extra cash.

crookesey 20-05-2011, 10:45 Was it Lotus, on the ground floor of Fargate House, located between Alexandre The Tailors (now H Samuel) and M&S? There was also Tudors newsagents, there is a photo of it in Sheffield Library Pictures.
Mrs H Solo 20-05-2011, 13:15 when you have all sorted out what shop it is, can anyone recall how much on average you would pay for a pair of ladies shoes, circa 1973? Nice shoes, that is.

It will possibly go on forever as nobody appears to have the correct answer.
