View Full Version : Cover versions: love them or hate them
trophyman 25-08-2004, 08:36 whats everyones opinions on cover versions constantly being released nowadays????. personally im against them as most artist spoil the original product but a few are quite good, even better, than the originals.
Here are my fave and least fave:
hey baby - d.j. otzi (better now its not as slow)
eternal flame - atomic kitten (hate that one)
My least fave is definitely the Westlife version of Barry Manilow's "Mandy", I mean just... WTF?!
How DARE they b******ise that song?! It was a classic originally.
One of my faves though is the Kevin the Gerbil version of Sir Cliff Richard's "Summer Holiday", hey I was only 6 when I bought it in 1982 and was mad on the whole Roland Rat thing.
miniminch 25-08-2004, 09:46 Hate; anything that pop idlol/stars in their eyes contestants butcher.
love; anything that is done to progess the music; No doubts - Talk talk cover Its my life is a good one I can think of because its unusual and not some standard like Elvis and beatles songs. It has a different sound to the original (less mellow) but what is clever is that many people prob don't know the original so will be hearing it for the first time.
There are so many brilliant songs out there to be covered. Why do people choose songs that have been played to death and record them in virtually the same way the original was done. Long and winding road- eternal flame to name but two -****ing garbage.
neeeeeeeeeek 25-08-2004, 10:16 Richard Cheese has done a great versions of Creep by Radiohead and a Classic version of Closer by Nine Inch Nails... Check em out!
DaBouncer 25-08-2004, 10:24 I thought Mansons version of Tainted Love beat the original hands down.
Westlifes Cover of Uptown Girl was a dire remake of the original tho :nono:

Westlife ruin anything they touch...
Contrary to the belief of a mate of mine who is convinced I'm a Westlife fan just cos I bought the Mandy abomination on CD :loopy:
Please no more of their inane crappiness.
DaBouncer 25-08-2004, 10:39 Hey Rich,
Although we all appreciate your strong views and in a lot of cases agree with them. However children read this site and it would be a better use of English to refrain from your use of profanity in this way.
How about adopting a softer terminology from the 'B' word?
I've noticed it on at least 3 seperate posts recently - is it your new word of the day?
Thanks :P

Richard Cheese Rocks!! His lounge style versions of "She f***ing hates me" "Smack my bitch up" and "Hit me baby one more time" are amazing!
Worst cover has to go to Will Young and his version of "Come on baby light my fire". Leave the original alone. it's too much of a classic to mess with.
The Darkness did a great cover of Radioheads 'Street Spirit'. And Snuffs version of 'I Think Were Alone Now' by Tiffany was pretty good as well. Sure this threads been done before though...
{edit}
Knew Id seen it before...original thread can be found here (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2765&highlight=cover+versions)

If you think that's bad you want to hear him doing Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds and Mr. Tambourine Man. They're positively bizarre!
carcrash 25-08-2004, 13:16 Somewhere in a dark dank area of my record collection I have that album.

You a mod now or summat?
Phanerothyme 25-08-2004, 13:59 Best - 14 Iced Bears once did a cover of Summer Lovin on an anti-poll tax benefit CD called "Alvin Lives in Leeds". Notbeing a fan of the song, their slowed right down distortion and drone version really improved it for me.
Either that or the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy with their cover of Dead Kennedys' excellent "California über alles".
Worst - Tide is high by Atomic Kitten. For a creditable cover look no further than Blondie, but this was just execrable, anodyne, sterile, vacuous musical offal
Will Young - Light my Fire. He totally extinguished the dangerous and seductive quality of the original with his wet blanket voice.

Originally done by Soft Cell, ooh, what, must be 20 (ish) years ago!!

Soft Cell's version of "Tainted Love" isn't the original. Gloria Jones recorded a version of the song in 1964 and it became a favourite on the Northern Soul scene which I think is where Marc Almond heard it. Her version is quite different to the Soft Cell and Marilyn Manson versions because it is uptempo and I think it beats all the other versions I've heard (including a version by the Inspiral Carpets) hands down.
Travis's version of Baby One More Time was great.
One of my favourites has to be Faith, covered by Limp Bizkit.

Will Young sucks period.
He only won cos fickle young teenage girls fancy him.
But then I hate all boy band/pop idol rubbish with a passion.
FairyNormal 25-08-2004, 15:06 Jamie Cullum's version of "Fronting" is also excellent.
alchresearch 25-08-2004, 15:55 Atomic Kitten are just dire. They cannot sing, cannot play any instruments and cannot write songs - which is why they covered as many songs as they did.
But, the worst song must be "you and I". Check out these 'lyrics':
You and I
You and I
Two of a kind
Two of a kind
A meeting of minds
The time of our lives
The perfect night
Our sight
As I look in your eyes
Never felt so right
<CHORUS STOLEN FROM ELO>
I really want tonight to last forever
I really want to be with you
I really want tonight to last forever
I really want to be with you
Night and day
Come what may
There's always change
Nothing stays the same
Who can say?
What will come our way
Leave it all to fate
Let tomorrow wait
I really want tonight to last forever
I really want to be with you
I really want tonight to last forever
I really want to be with you
Tonight, yeah
Tonight yeah
I really want tonight to last forever
I really want to be with you
Let the music play on top of life tonight
The perfect night
Out of sight
As I look in your eyes
Never felt so right
Ooh yeah

Yep, a search for "Atomic Kitten Lyrics" did the trick!
I'm someone who thinks musical perfection was reached in 1986-87!
great!
counting crows - big yellow taxi(joni mitchell)
dare i say - will young - hey ya(outkast)
****e
'the appletons and shaznay - can't remember the name" - under the bridge(chilli peppers)

Well, aren't people so shallow-minded? Atomic Kitten found a gap in the market and made a lot of money making records (however bad you or I might think they were) giving a certain element what they wanted to buy.
It's not a question of personal taste when you make records, it's a case of weighing up what is going to sell.
Isn't it obvious?
Please tell me you know this.

I think that's blatantly obvious. It's the face that sells, not the record.
But, this is not the subject of this thread.
We are slagging off cover versions and I found this to be one of the worst. It wouldn't have been so bad if they had used ELO's 'Last Train to London' lyrics. They are bad, but not half as bad as the clichéd drivel they managed to cobble together.
Sam Miguel 25-08-2004, 19:16 Hmmm, I'll let you off. A cover version has to do or say something that the original piece didn't.
A prime example of this was Joe Cocker's version of 'A Little Help From My friends' which was done in a completely different way to The Beatles original version, and so became a new 'original' song in its own right and at the same time earned John, Paul, George and Ringo a few more pennies in royalties.
I hope that someone someday gives the same sort of treatment to my immortal piece 'Our Cat's Got a Green Piano'.

Ditto "Light My Fire". Doors' version and José Feliciano / Will Young versions completely different.
What about Mike Flowers Pops and Wonderwall? Great or grating?

Not strictly true, George and Ringo make nothing from a cover version of a Lennon & McCartney song
Sam Miguel 26-08-2004, 17:21 Well pointed out. I ran away with my words.

They are works of genius! I include one Shatner on any first compilation I do for someone. The spock album's even wierder.
commie pig 26-08-2004, 17:49 Greatest covers, hmmm, tough choice, but, assuming old blues standards are dismissed, then The Breeders version of Happiness Is A Warm Gun is astounding, ditto Hendrix's All Along The Watchtower. And almost all of the last Johnny Cash album too. Oh, and The White Stripes' I Just Dont Know What To Do with Myself.
Worst? far too many to choose from. Who was the saddo that made a big point of doing an absolutely identical version of a (?) Nat King Cole song a few years back? Pointless and vile it was.
Will whats his face?
Come on baby light my fire.
Although i'm not a fan I do like this version almost as much as the doors.
Oh and scissor sisters, comfortably numb I like too.

Try and hear the original done in this style.

Yuck, the Will Young version of Light my fire sucks in comparison to the classic original, Jim Morrison would turn in his grave if he could hear it God rest him.
