New tower approved today will be the tallest ever built in Sheffield, just giving it the edge over the University of Sheffield's Arts Tower which was built in 1965.
Hope this is just the beginning of more high rise developments to come, to give Sheffield the skyline it deserves.
Report from Sheffield City Council:
St Mary’s Gate Flats given go-ahead
The official go-ahead has been given today for a prominent development of flats and offices on St Mary’s Gate by members of Sheffield Council’s City Centre and East Planning Area Board.
Permission was originally granted for the development in September 2003 providing flats in a 19-storey tower with 12-storey wing on a site at the corner of St Mary’s Gate and Moore Street and a seven-storey office block.
The original scheme proposed 193 flats with 55 car parking spaces with 69 car parking spaces on the existing short-term car park. The seven-storey office block would have 69 car parking spaces.
An amended application was submitted in March based on a more accurate cost appraisal. This application was to provide 12 more flats (making it 205) and 19 more parking spaces (up to 74). The first floor of the wing was to be used for parking instead of flats and the extra flats were to be accommodated in an additional floor in the wing (making 13 storeys) and by adding two more floors on the tower (making it 21 storeys).
The latest revision follows a further cost appraisal by the applicants. They include adding to the overall size of the tower by building two extra flats per floor, adding an extra floor to the tower, adding an extra flat per floor to the wing, using the first floor of the wing for flats instead of parking and the addition of a retail unit on the ground floor.
Councillor Alan Law, Chair of the Board commented: “We believe it is important to develop this prime site into the city centre, but the final appearance of the buildings must be to a high standard and provide a visually-attractive addition to Sheffield’s skyline.”
