I know their are a lot of folk on this site with local knowledge of Pitsmoor so I hope that someone can help.

I have an old death certificate with an address that I can't locate. The certificate is dated 1923 and the address is 2 Smiller Lane, Pitsmoor, Sheffield. I've looked on various lists and can't find it at all.

Could it be 25 miller lane?

Hello no1machiist, thanks for the reply.

It doesn't look as though it could be that as the 2 is written above the Smiller between the S and m. The S in Smiller looks exactly like the S in Sheffield.

2 Smilter Lane was the address for the Northern General Hospital or Firvale as it would have been then,
Smilter Lane now Herries Road

1925 Kelly's
2 Smilter Lane
Wilfred Roebuck Beevers-assistant Poor Law Institute master

Thankyou retep. I've been trying to find this address since 1996!! Another mystery solved and yet more questions seem to have arisen from the answer. I can't believe I got replies so quickly. Thanks again

I thought that Herries rd was called Piper Lane, are you sure it wasn't an off shoot of that.

Smilter Lane was a continuation of Piper Lane, the bottom bit as you go round the corner towards Firvale lights.

Has anyone ever found any records of the inmates of the workhouse there. My Grandfather died there and I have never found out anything about him. Can anyone help?

hiya, i've just looked for smilter rd in my 1895 street directory but the only listing was for smilter lane (barnsley rd) there was on this lane only odd numbers at that time from coningsby rd,firvale rd,batley st,crabtreerd, and piper lane, the numbers were 45, to 143
