View Full Version : Am I still an expat?
no1machinist 08-11-2006, 20:27 After 22 years in Australia I finally pulled the pin and have come home. I am living in possibly the most beautiful place on earth. On a North Devon farm. Do I still class myself as an expat? I went back to Oz for a daytrip in september just to be sure farmlife is what I wanted and this it definately it.
Regards.
How do you go to Oz for a day trip ,it takes a day to get there?
Maybe he/she meant Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire. :hihi: :hihi:

Sheffielders are not the greatest at the use of the English language ,how on earth can you be an ex when you are back in your country of birth.
Patriot champion or lover of his country.

Hi There
Well at least you tried both sides of the world. Glad you made the right descision for yourself. Wish you all the very best.Gods country is where you find the most happiness and peace. GOOD ON YA MATE
Vera.
I've got to agree with Vera on that No1, I always said that if I didn't like it when I arrived here, I would not return to Sheffield until I had been all around Oz & had a good look at it, I've been here over 30 years now in the same place.
The only thing that I've missed and still do are family & friends close by.
Some farmers just like to MOO've around a bit.
Hi no1machinist
My understanding of a Sheffield Ex Pat is someone who has left Sheffield, but still thinks of the place. And DavidRa is correct, Sheffielders are in general not the greatest in there use of the english language, and "before we get the grammer experts giving their views" all Sheffield folk care about the people not the grammer and spelling.
You were born in Sheffield you will always be a Sheffielder wherever you live.
I live in Inverness, but at heart my home town is the capital of the north of England and more importantly Sheffield is in YORKSHIRE.
We are I think the only county that call ourselves with the county's name and our puddings are eaten not only in the uk but world wide and our steel and cutelrey is world famous (MADE IN SHEFFIELD).
Sorry for the rant but there is only one Sheffield and all that live there now and all who have moved on are proud of the name

All very true there Sandie.
Ive been away now for 43 years. If anyone asks me where I come from I just say "where you get all your good cutlery from" they usually know straight away, that has to tell you something eh!! then you can bet they follow it up with and they make the Yorkshire Puddings. Only time I don't want to talk about Yorkshire Puddings is when I have someone in for tea and the puddings don't rise. Now that's a great let down for a Sheffielder. Yep! Proud of the place but moved on just for a look at aussie still here and still looking.
I used to work for a cutlery Firm Hopkinsons (no relation of mine) at the bottom of the Moor. Come to think about it wasn't there a fish and chip there too. Good old Sheffield.

I say yes you're still expat because you're living in Devon not Sheffield Yorkshire, but then it depends if you were born in Sheffield.

I have just sent you a private message please reply
I left sheffield 22 years ago and I have been fortunate to have lived and worked in many parts of the world. I am a Gleadless valley lad.
Today I have two kids that live a much more privilaged life than I was raised on. The two things I have engrained into them is to "say what you mean" and "not to suffer fools gladly"
I am proud to tell people I meet of my roots.
I think roots are important.
How can you be an ex-pat from a place that you're known all your life ?
