Hunters Bar Primary school & Hunters Bar Junior School.

I think "Hunters Bar" was a toll gate orignally?

If you look closely next time you are passing, you will see the original toll-gate slap-bang in the middle of the roundabout.

The family who collected the toll money were called hunter.

The 'Hunter House Hotel' just past HB Roundabout used to be a farmhouse. The farmer, Mr Hunter had rights to charge a toll to pass through his land hence ' Hunters TOLL bar' - I don't know if the toll bar on the roundabout is the original, would be suprised, cos it's so long ago. (Read it in a booklet)

Other stuff from here included items about witchcraft in the area - Endcliffe Park derived from 'ELFcliffe' Dobbin Hill, further up the road supposedly from 'GOBLIN hill'

Read this booklet early 80s, and have tried to track it down since, couldnt find it in library archive, either..

The irony is a modern form could soon be back if Sheffield council ever realise their dream of a congestion charge (which is totally unnecessary IMO).

Interesting photos - hard to identify the original building as part of Hunter House Hotel (understand still exists) a friend of mine built anextension to bridge two adjacent buildings that now form the HH Hotel, one being the original, I think, and one of a much later build, I believe

The stone posts are still within the modern roundabout, but the tollhouse on the left (going out of town) was demolished.

From the impression I get here of the council...the funny part would be that it wouldn't look any different than those pictures. A guy sitting on the side of the road on a plastic chair holding a coin box and a wooden gate across the road.

and they do say that everything goes full circle eventually, so why not?
