Hi everyone, I don't know if this is the right place to post this as I've just joined the site, but here goes. I moved to Sheffield (Beighton) from Norfolk 2 months ago and I still don't know anybody. I am not working, so spend a lot of time at home or walking around the Rother Valley lakes. I joined a Tai Chi class which I am enjoying immensely and chat to people there but as yet, no friendship has evolved. I realise this will take time but in the meantime I'm getting a bit lonely. My daughter is in Sheffield at Hallam uni but has her own life and hasn't got much time for the old crone. So does anyone want to hook up, have a coffee/drink and a chat? I like walking but 5 miles is about enough. I'm into writing and getting more into that now the kids have gone. I play the piano, Les Dawson style and love music. Love eccentric people and people with anything interesting to say. Female by the way, very young 53, aging hippy, don't follow the crowd, non smoker.
Be very pleased to hear from anyone male/female any age. We can chat on msn and perhaps meet if we find we have enough common ground. Looking forward to hearing from you.....Sara

Hi there, and welcome to the forum. I dont mind meeting for a coffee in town sometime. No doubt I shall be heading that way quite often in the weeks leading up to Christmas. I am not into walking, but like music & am a keen amateur thespian.

Hi there Sara,
Welcome to the forum. I've only recently started posting on this site myself with a view to perhaps making new friends. I used to play guitar in a band years ago and still do a bit of song writing. I don't use msn but can pm my email addy if you'd like to know more?

Cheers
Dez

Hi Moonwalker....Yeh Beighton seems alright, although there does seem to be a lot of kids with footballs round here! I'm not far from the post office....which is where I'm heading now before the dam gas runs out!! Are you studying at Hallam? My daughter is doing Media studies there. I think Sheffield is a cool place to be and I'm glad I came.....Bye for now, Sara:cool:

Have you ever considered doing some volunteer work? I go out on most Sundays with the Sheffield Conservation Volunteers, and if the timings bad, or you don't fancy conservation, then there are a bunch of other organisations in Sheffield you could join. You could pop in the Volunteer Shop on Division street who would probably find something up your street.

Richard....yes I have thought about conservation work. What sort of things do you do on a Sunday?

Hi there, I live in Beighton too and love to ride my mountain bike on the trails around Rother Valley. Does anyone here ride too? We could all meet up one Sunday and hit the trails as a group and throw a coffee stop in on the way. Anyone interested? male or female especially those not fit coz I aint looking to race.

Hi there, I moved to Sheffield nearly 2 years ago from london and have found it quite hard to make friends. I think this is for several reasons, ie 1) loads of younger people having been at uni here and keeping their old uni friends and therefore being a bit cliquey, 2) older people seem to be a bit suspicious of outsiders - people frequently assume i am 'posh' whatever that means because I have a southern accent, and i often get grilled about my social background, 3) there is a lack of an after-work quick drink thing like there is in London, people go home and get changed, so you don't meet new people through that, and probably i will annoy people saying this, but 4) i think people are superficially friendly (chatting on the bus etc) but are actually quite cagey and don't invite you to their houses till they have known you for months and months, years even. My advice is to do volunteering and get a hobby eg join a walking club, get an allotment etc. Give it time, I still find it hard work, and people are still telling me that London is snooty and unfriendly ha ha!!! Good Luck :)

Hi notion....interesting post!! Yes I've heard of this North/South divide thing before but having a Yorkshire accent, I haven't noticed it personally. As for people being only superficially friendly, you obviously haven't been to Norfolk! They say you have to live there for at least thirty years before they will accept you......well not quite...try fifty! I lived there for 15 years and never really felt I belonged, nor did I have many friends, even tho I am a friendly person and pretty easy to get on with. People there regard new commers with suspicion. Here Sheffield is a dream compared to there. I like it here. I feel more at home. And the response I've had from my ad has been surprising. I am meeting someone tonight for a drink as a matter of fact and have someone else to meet on Thursday, plus e mails flying backwards and forwards and new pple to chat to on msn. Thank you everyone. It really does make me feel wanted and welcome. The other thing I would like to add is that I suppose you do have to make a bit more of an effort yourself. No good sitting in a corner feeling unwanted! Technology makes communications easier, so even if youre a shy person, you can get on yr pc and talk to people from the safety of your own home. I am one happy bunny and I love Sheffield and its people!!

Nice to see everyone coming together to be honest!

A good way to get to know people, believe it or not is through Karaoke! There is no way you can look at someone the same way after! And you wont be alone in making a bit of a wally of yourself!
Chin up! It seems you're doing really well. I always feel anxious bout even considering going to the meets that are arranged, been here a year and i'm still nervous! :loopy:

I'd be interested in getting some mountain biking in (I'm the daughter btw) although I don't fancy biking to Beighton from Ecclesall. Need some spanners to sort out my brakes first though.

We'll have to drag Repunzel along on her shopper-bike! :P

Hi Figsta

Sounds like a plan. Do you know anywhere round where you live? If not, I have an estate that we should be able to chuck the bikes in and go find some trails. PM me if you are still interested and we will arrange something (shopping baskets and all) :)

I live right next to Endcliffe Park, there's plenty of trails into the peaks about a mile out through all the woods. That will be fun and not too hefty so all can participate. Either way the lakes near you'z two are very pleasant.

I also intend to get to the closest wind farm to Sheffield, and other environmental sites for my dissertation project. It'd be nice to make this into an open to all mission, and get a handful of people to come and pose for the photography I require, we can bike, bus or drive either way it'll be a good bit of urban exploration for all to enjoy. Anyone interested?
