no, when i was on i used to live in wharncliffe side and went to northern radio up lodge moor, so it was the three merry lads, sportsman or the grave diggers at w/s that had to put up with me :)

My handle was the ginja ninja but that was up in Durham.

Ive still got a couple of rigs upstairs which I put into a couple of vans at work but took them back out again as there is no one on them down here.

They did come in handy again a year or two ago when we went to the lakes with our car and a van. I put one in the car and one in the van and saved a small fortune on my mobile bills !!!!!

Its spooky but me and my ten yearold were only talking about this last week and he was asking me to set one up again so he could play with it.

Might have to dust one of them, good bud....

Cripes, I remember picking up a second hand set and putting it in the car. We used to sit in the car park at Shirecliffe College on top of the hill, winding up the kiddies.

I remember one very special occasion when some lad in Stannington insisted he knew who we were and that he was coming around to beat us up.

I still wonder what happened to some poor kid that evening. :shakes:

I had a neighbour who had a cb & it interfered with my TV something chronic there were chevrons all over the TV.I had many an argument with him eventually he put up a 25 foot ariel & the council told him to take it down, end of trouble, but I have a new neighbour a few doors away who did the same thing except his ariel was 30 foot high 2 of them but the council told him to take them down.I believe he has fitted something in his loft but on my terrestrial TV I still get chevrons on the Digital its ok.Don't get me wrong a hobby is a good thing as long as it does not interfere with other peoples lives.

I first had a CB when I was about 8. Two of the brothers had them and they set me up with their spare kit. Sat in the front room (Mum wouldn't let me put it in the bedroom in case I stayed up all night). Mobile rig connected to a car battery and a mag mount stuck on a Biscuit Tin, Hence the handle....

Mine was Darkstar. Was on around 84-85 and then again in 1990-1995.

Had (and still got!) a Rotel 240, mag mount and Moddy 1 on the car. Car battery, charger and GP-27 on the house.

They were the forums of the day!

dave The station at NGH was disused when I joined at Lodge Moor but it was still there.
I had a show with Mike Thompson and Bruce Fernell and we would go round hospitals at night interviewing the patients and recording them then editing it and putting it on our show.
Mike was a brilliant DJ, me and Bruce were just his hand rags really, but i did eventually get my own show,.
Gordon Harrison was the main man in charge and I remember Pete Kelsey who was the engineer.
Also remember an interview done by Bob Monkhouse who called into the studio to discuss his career with us.
Oooh, sorry should'nt go on about Northern radio, this is a thread about CB.
Regarding CBs does anyone remember the meetings at Gee Gees and Grimesthorpe club, and the nortorius wisperer.

My hub's handle was "the Android", way back in the days when it was still on "AM" not "FM"!

I was Lady Aries.

I stopped going on cb about 20 yrs ago, because it started getting really silly, people with potty mouths, swearing, just for the sake of it, people deliberately keying their mikes over what another person was saying, etc. (mostly the young-and-daft element, but it meant that you could not have a decent chat with folk, and it just got to be a pain in the backside.)

I had a "Homing Pigeon", indoor aerial, which I believe might have been illegal....

It was an unusual design, similar in style, to the poles you can buy, nowadays, for shower curtains, which twist outwards and lock into position, without the fixings... it was easier to set up than the dipole aerials, but it was not so easy to calibrate the SWR on it.

PT
Ps, talking of aerials, my other half has set up a Pudding-tin as a satellite dish...

trouble is, all i can get is Yorkshire...!

Titian
29-08-2004, 19:19
I'm ashamed to admit that in my early teens I had my dads old CB. I had a Di pole? and at one point I had a car battery that had lost it's charge so stuck a battery charger to it when I used it.
I remember a very loud buzzing and lots of bubbling battery acid in my bedroom.

I can't believe that my parents allowed me to do this. I'm sure it ruined my education with all the late nights.

Where was it? From Rotherham, pass B & Q towards Greasborough, straight over the island, top of the hill. It's on the right hand side opposite the tip. Is that good enough for you ???

Well theres not many places to hide at the Crows Nest :)

We are talking some time back, probably 92-95. Some of this time I didn't even have my own car so would turn it with either a works van or sat in with a mate.

Yellow works Transit
Yellow Works Beford Rascal (now this would be hard to miss :) )
Mates Orange?? chevette
Several Fiestas
Mark 1 Blue Astra (my 1st motor)

Never did a full install into my 2nd motor (Red Mk2 Cavalier) but did occasionally use a magmount and cig lighter for a 1 night temp install but by this time the muppets had taken over.....

Then there was the voice that boomed out all over the place. She was Crushed velvet from Heeley.
There were quite a few 'eyeballs' held locally. A couple in Graves Park and some at the sports ground near Tinsley.
Out of town venues were Scunthorpe baths and a very big one in Skegness.

You've got ' Teamaker ' on the side whilst ' SledgeHammer ', is giving you the ten tens. He's ' out '. They were great days on the rig. What as happened to all of the Dore & Totley Breakers? Come on or have you all got four or five youngsters now?

There were two vipers on during the 90's. Lived pretty close to each other too but I don't think they ever spoke to each other . One changed their handle eventually I think.

There were lots of similar handles kicking about which caused some entertaining amusement :hihi:

During the 1970 and 80s I travelled all over the country using ' teamaker ' and I never met another.
I acquired the name from another breaker called ' SledgeHammer '. The first time I had a go on his Rig was on a night shift at work in the early hours, The man who I was speaking to asked me, my handle. ( or is it Angle?). Initially I didn't realise what he was talking about!! So I asked SledgeHammer who had just seen me making a cup of tea. Hence - Teamaker.
Happy days were the CB Days but thigs move on.

How did you get your CB Name?

Another superb thread on this marvellous website :)
I was on the rig in the early 80s from the Gleadless Valley area, handle "Silver Eagle". Starting off with a Magmount on a biscuit tin (those SWR readings!!!), progressing to a di-pole and then finally a GP27. My "good buddies" were Buck Rodgers, HM1 through to HM4, Firecracker.......there were so many yet i've forgotten their handles!!.
Absolutely great days, especially going mobile on foot with a few CB'ers with a hand-held rig, calling in and surprising a few people along the way!

I used to use a family friend's cb rig, he was called Monte Carlo from Parson Cross.... I would love to know how he is, as he's either getting on, or gone to another wonderful world...

I also remember a Golden Girl but cannot remember other names.

Never got to eyeball anyone.....

I couldn't believe the change!

I wonder what he's like now? Come to think of it, I wonder what Jon - Laughing Gravy looks like too? Him and Jamie were both like the "MAN at C&A" models back in the eighties!!

You got ' Teamaker ' on the side.

When I first used the CB I was on night shift at work, SledgeHammer who had brought the radio in had nipped off somewhere and I decided to have a ear wig whilst I was making a cup of tea. I switch it on and pressed the microphone button. Nothing happened. So I put it down. Suddenly, a voice came over and asked me my hangle. I did not understand what he was talking but Sledgehammer arrived back just in time. Hence I became ' Teamaker '.

The station at NGH was disused when I joined at Lodge Moor but it was still there.
Regarding CBs does anyone remember the meetings at Gee Gees and Grimesthorpe club, and the nortorius wisperer.

the one you recall at the Hillfoot Club was Sheffield CB'ers Association of which i was a committee member.... we boasted taking over £500 one Saturday night, it sadly went downhill after that and we moved to Burnaby Street WMC and due to dwindling membership disbanded and the club was demolished and there are houses where the old club was.... it was only a stone throw away from IXL CB (sadly deceased some years ago now)... oh what memories wonder if you remember me? What a farce the whole UK CB craze was, talking nonsense to some scruffy lorry driver 300yds away while making up ridiculous names for one another. It only survived by its illegality making geeks think they were living on the edge.

As soon as the HS made it legal it died a swift death.

We gone..........
