Just wondered what different people's expectations and experiences are of Sheffield Forum.

Why are you here !?

What do you hope to get from using Sheffield Forum !?

Does it meet those needs !?

I'm here to keep in touch with my home town. To catch up on local news and happenings.

I would go to shefieldtoday.co.uk but it is a pile of bo***cks, a couple of crappy news stories and very little else in the way of content.

At least on here I can ask a question about something and get an immediate answer.

The only thing this forum needs is a couple of webcams, one focused on the city and one perhaps from Bishops House, or top of the Hallamshire, and it would be perfection!

I needed to find a housemate....so I advertised but much to my ever resilient patience..my current housemate decided not to leave until mid september...so I was just kicking around here.....you know...bimbling :)

I dont have/want a TV but this is entertaining...a bit like a cross between a soap opera and a car wreck......AND interactive

Love you all tho....xxxxx

I work all hours
Only discovered this (sheffieldforum) recently... and I like it...
Not only does it give me an opportunity to distract myself from work... I can vent frustrations, broadcast views and feel in touch while earning the pennies.
I also enjoy sticking an oar in and checking the reaction. :D Sorry people, but I know I'm not the only guilty party here. So it's fun and you get to know people, albeit cyber folk.

BUT... I've also found it useful 'cause it's good for what I do. I write a bit here and there and this forum is an excellent source of information and inspiration.

It gets a big  from me.

Well this is my first post, I'm here because the monotony of news 24 was getting to me a bit, my other forum I've posted at for the past 50 years has shut down. So here I am, I dont know what I expect from this forum, apart from I come from these parts and I didnt want to talk about the same old blethering flaming nonsense we posted on my old forum, am i growing up I wonder? If any mods are reading this, whats the score on the old 'bad' language? Do I have to watch my filthy mouth? or not?
Theres maybe some 'rules' thread that I've missed? Thats me all over, I'll check..... no I can't see one.
Right first post so I'd better not send everyone to sleep.

I joined after my wife found the forum, and as I have a view on most things and a great desire to make other people aware of that view, I started posting. I've been on various online forums for the best part of 20 years, so this forum is another in a long line of places where I pontificate!

And, hopefully, offer the odd good bit of advice, listen and learn new stuff myself.

Why? Why not? Its just something else to read, and a better way of keeping up with whats going on where I live than the local papers.

Why are YOU here, Jamie? How about answering your own question?

Thanks slh73.

I was thinking about this last night (hence me starting this thread).

Several reasons I guess ...

It's a very very good online resource for local information.

It's also a good sounding board for testing out ideas.

But I guess the real reason I am here is that I hope it will fill a need I have for 'connecting' with people (and I am not sure that it does).

I work at home and so I spend a lot of my time alone (apart from my evenings). I guess I like other people's company and if I can't have other people around me in person, the next best thing is online company.

It is habit forming though, and I spend way too much time on here lately (and I only blame myself for that).

That's me.

I came on to purely advertise the Classic Rock Bar, Ecclesall Road, near Safeway....live music playing every night.....but often get distracted and end up contributing to other threads. I guess it's that opinion thing that's just bursting to get out!

Well I'm here cause I was looking for a new forum as my old one packed up.

Well to state my opinions and the classifieds section has come in handy cause I have bought a guitar off it and hopefully a new amp :D

Yes it does, it's a good forum.

It all started with a need to find a place to live.. moved on to finding new things to do and new people to go do them with... *stop sniggering in back there*...

.. and now I just pop back once in a while to share a nugget of useful information or to solicit a little advice...

I live at the other side of the world so I use Sheffield Forum to keep me in touch with the happenings in the city of my birth.
I love reading the posts, sometimes alarming, sometimes annoying, sometimes enlightening but best of all, sometimes downright amusing. Thanks Sheffield Forum, for helping me stay in touch with my roots !

I found this place by accident while looking for something else on Google way back last September, and I've been addicted ever since.

I found the forum by accident and now I'm hooked.

I usually log on at lunchtime as a break from work and then my biggest problem is then shutting down and getting back on with some work.

Reading posts on this forum has made me...
- laugh
- angry
- sorry
- rethink my opinions
- frustrated (trying to remember days gone by)
- think I am sane after all
- think I'm going mad.

all these emotions - the forum must be doing something right!

I was introduced to the site by a good mate of mine... I find it very addictive...

You can keep updated with whats happening around you in your home town... have a goss... make/meet new friends...

I feel its a good way of communicating people... As some people can be Shy, Dont like to go out alone, Restricted on their social life etc... so being online brings that new lease of life into their own home...

Online is the way forward! (dating chatting friends etc...)

Cos I'm a mod!! :D

I first came here yonks ago when the site first opened, because I was doing some research for a website I was making for one of my modules. I stayed, and Geoff asked me to be a mod, I accepted, the rest is history. I don't even live in Sheffield any more.

I'm here because I'm not there, if you know what I mean.

I find the Sheffield Forum to be a great source of entertainment.

It's nice to be able to contribute to other peoples' views and express yourself at the same time.

I find the Sheffield Forum usefull, I have spent many happy hours here, it is informative, entertaining, challenging and althouth there is a lot of rubbish on from people who post, there is a wide variety of topics to choose from and it serves a purpose for not only the locals, but from people all over the World.

That journalist who said it is not "usefull is talking out of the top of his liquerice hat, why doesn't he go and play elsewhere, or better still GET LOST!!!

I was forced to join this forum by a Mod at knife point.

I ended up using it for a break away from what I saw as 'real life' and also for chatting to people I possibly may not have talked to in sheffield (perhaps through prejudice or a feeling I have nothing in common with them, which is always a complete lie, i've discovered) and just to learn about their feelings about this city I love to bits.

I tend to use it now just for casual insanity, and perhaps for a laugh when i'm stuck in this middle of nowhere village

Jamie, it's much more entertaining than the T.V
It is a bit addictive - getting a bit concerned:D
I found it 'cos the landlady in my local said that another local pub had been 'on the internet' because 'the other landlady' had been accused of being 'the worst pub manager in the world' or similar.
Did a google search for the pub, got linked straight toForum, stayed here...

I googled looking for stuff about Kelvin Flats and ended up here. I agree that it's kinda addictive and I log in every day to catch up with the gossip, news and opinions of others.

There were a few familiar faces I knew from r/l and other forums etc and I have made several new good friends here. I think it's a valuable resource and a pat on the back for those who run it.

Do you think that's true? If so, it's very sad.

Has it ever happened, though? I doubt it.

Well probably not 90%, but there are some blokes on here who seem pretty desperate.

Hi There, My reason for using the forum is the same as Banksias is. Not having lived in the country for many years I find it great to catch up with a lot of the local news and changes. Love the letters on Sheffield Dialect, Yep! it could come addictive if you have the time to spare. Although I am still finding it difficult to follow the links but a bit of practice and we'll be right mate.
Cheers Banksia from N>S>W>

Stumbled upon it when I was trying to research the dodgy city we were supposed to move to for my hubby's studies :)

And it has been a big help... a good place to have questions answered. Have met a few great people out of the deal as well.

A good distraction any way you cut it.
