Went to Greystones 1954 to its closure as an Intermediate School in 1956.
Mr Reeman was headmaster and Deputy Miss Hopwood who taught Music and Needlework,a fearsome teacher who terrified me.She only died a few years ago, well in her nineties.I still have copies of The Martlet school magazine with lots of signatures on the back.It was tradition at the end of the academic year to get the leavers to sign the magazine.
In 2004 a book was launched about the school for its centenury.I went back for this ,first time since 1956 and it brought back many happy memories.I dont think it was promoted enough, there did'nt seem all that many there and certainly no one I recognised and I never saw the book on sale in the local bookshops.

Hi Marylin
I remember the name but can't put a face to you.Maybe we were in different years. The school closed at the end of my 3rd year.King Ecgberts just was'nt the same.I opted to join the Commercial class i.e.4c.I would have preferred Science but the form mistress for Science option was Miss Baxter and just as scarry as Miss Hopwood.
Do you remember the Ranch House and all that marching we had to practice prior to Sports Day and the rehersals for Speech Day.
I see you're new to this Forum so if you want to contact me you can click on my user name and choose PM option

Hi Audrey,
I was very excited to get a reply from you. unfortunately I have to have 10 postings before I can use the personal method. We are having major work at home and every room is upside down and I can't remember where my Martlets are. I wanted to look and find the date of the one I am pictured in. It is probably 1954 and I'm in the netball team and I seem to remember your name from netball. Am i right? I did go to King Ecgberts but don't have the same recall as you!! Kitty used to put the fear of God into me , just like Miss Hopwood. I couldn't believe she died recently, she used to live with Miss Baxter on Carterknowle Road.I would like to email you on a personal level in the future. I'm not brilliant with computers and haven't been on the net very long. I found that my class had a reunion this April but unfortunately I was away. A few names from my year Norma Wilson, Christine & Sylvia Brown (twins) Pearl Methley, Anne Bronks, Elaine Ibbotson, Christine Marriott to name a few. I live in Ilkeston in Derbyshire, it's about 7miles from Nottingham. I often come to Sheffield as I have a sister living there. Look forward to your next contact. Marilyn Cam ( nee Hasler)

Hi Marylin, You have mentioned me - Ann Hill (nee Bronks) and the re-union
you missed. Just to let you and others who may be interested know that Norma Wilson, Chris and Sylvia Brown, Beryl Marriott, Yvonne Rowland and Chrissie Ireson all went on a cruise for our 60th birthday and we are all off
again in June next year for our 65th. Except Pearl because she has to look
after her Mum. We have been in touch for many years now and meet about
twice a year. Anyone who wants to join our luncheon club will be most
welcome. (Marilyn - I even remember your address 218 Tullibardine Road!

Hi Ann,
Thanks for your email, it was great to hear from you. I always remembered your birthday was March 20th but wouldn't know your address although I did go to your house for tea once. I think it was to Parson Cross. It would be great to meet you sometime and catch up.I bet you had a great time all together on your 60th and I'm sure on the 65th too!!! How did you all manage to keep in touch originally . Do you live in the same area? I've missed out on all the fun so it seems. All best wishes Marilyn (Maz)

I was a red "Lovetot" in the late 40's. 'Rough' Reeman was the head & a Quaker I think. He seemed massive with hair growing out of his ears & nose & a selection of canes by his desk. In the bad winters, in assembly he informed latecomers that if they came on the circular bus they would escape detention as it often got stuck in the snow. Many years later he began a local history course at the sheffield museum and on the first night he was late & as I opened the door I saw this small elderly man with a few snowflakes on his hat who apologised for being late. I said it was allright if he had come on the circular bus. He looked at me in amazement and I had to explain. A very nice gentleman.

Barbara Fletcher did live on Boston St! I had forgotten about Mr Wragg, pink face and white hair!! Have you seen the Greystones sec Modern book? it shows pictures of a group of us who went to Switzerland!! I used to baby sit for Roy and Jean Turley, read somwhere he had been awarded some Queens medal OBE or something for what I don't know. He was a real looker, and the girls fancied him like mad, we said he looked like Ty Hardin(Bronco Lane, not the footballer!) You have to be a certain age to remember him!!! Do you remember any of the names I posted?

Of the names you quoted I can only recollect the name of Whiting and that was of a boy called David,he may have been Janets brother?
My son Christopher and his wife and two children are flying to Turkey on Monday next for a two weeks stay in Yaliciftlik at the Hapimag Sea Garden Hotel. He is going to visit Bodrum because of its archaeological interest, this will be his second visit, but the first for his family.
Nice to hear from you again-keep in touch.:

Yaliciftlik is a place my fireind has a restaurant and spent many a happy hour on this beach and the sea there is lovely. I work Sunday evenings All day Monday and all day Thursday but as the Sea Garden is not one of our resorts, we dont go that area on our coaches. I live on the very first road down into Bodrum called Dr. Mumtaz Ataman Caddesi, yes and lots of intesting places here. I also have a friend who works for sea garden a fella called Terry - Irish -he sells the trips etc Its so nice to hear from people back home I do get so home sick some days. Hi Roger
Janet Whiting, as was, here. Now Jan Beresford. Finally, somebody from school whose name I recognise. I'd almost given up. Not a sign of anybody in ages and then two come along at once (bit like buses I suppose). I heard from Vera Parker nee Hardwick last week and now you. There's someone called Jack Hewitt and someone called Hetty on the Forum and they certainly seem to know a lot of names from the year I was in, but I don't recognise their names. Perhaps you do, although I think you must have been in the year above me if you left in '58. I left Christmas '59
The David Whiting you mentioned was, or is my cousin and he had or has a sister named Carol. Their dad was my dad's brother and he kept the Vine at the end of Hodgson Street. One of my mates was Christine Marsh and she lived in the end house across from the Vine. She had about 7 brothers and sisters. One of my best mates from school was Judy Milner and she is Vera's cousin.
It would be nice to keep in touch. Regards JanB

Hi Janber
Are you sure Christine Marsh lived opposite the Vine the large Marsh family i remember lived on Young st in the yard below Pickerings cardboard box factory and opposite the chippy at the corner of Bishop st if my memory serves me right Bill Brown was a half brother the others i remember are Steve Marsh and Danny Marsh RIP Steve is the same age as myself Danny was younger by about two years Bill was older the names of the girls just don't register with me such a long time ago now  .

Hi Jack
Yes, Christine definitely lived across from the Vine when I knocked about with her. They could have moved later. A girl named Kath Fowler (who we also knocked about with for a time) lived somewhere near Pickerings but I can,t remember the name of the road.
I remember Steve's name from the Marsh clan and I think Chris had a brother called Tony who was a year younger than her but, Tempis Fugit and the memory fades as to the names of the rest of them. Regards.

Back again Kath Fowler lived on Bishop st in the same yard as the Williamson family another large family Frank,Roy,Graham Keith to name a few of the lads plus Roger Kay who i don't think you will remember him being a few years younger Bishop st is the st that runs between Wicks DIY store and the Manpower service building as it stands now back then Bishop st with the junction of Young st stood a chip shop and at the side built into the wall was a cage with a monkey in it do you remember a girl called Pamela Clarke i seem to think she hung around with Kath Fowler and another girl called Jean Hancock who lived on Michale rd who i knew very well back then back to the Marsh family it looks like they might be two different families i don't remember a Tony within the one i know i hope that helps you TAKE CARE.
