8) Nah Den Ace.......

Anyone remember all those local bands wi' dodgy names from the late 80s/early 90s?

F*** City S****ers daubed there name in big letters on the car park fence on West Street (where the new flats are now.) Who else was there......??? Slop, Dosh and Bobbar......Go Get F***ed.

What were they putting in the snakebites in them days?!?

My personal favourites were The Deformed Tadpoles from Mars.......whatever happened to "The Taddies"?

If you vote in the poll on the left of the page that says that your vote has been registered there are links to websites about some of the bands in the poll. However, if you click on the Cabaret Voltaire link you are taken to the website of an Edinburgh bar/club called Cabaret Voltaire which seems to have no connection with the Sheffield band of the same name.

I daren't click on the Joe Cocker link to a website called cocker.com.

Awww, I *HAD* to vote for Little Angels. Used to be a major fan in my early twenties. Went all over the place following them around. I know they were never international, but tried, but I still have a wee place in my musical heart for them.

I'm sure there are bigger and greater bands, but they were and still are one of my personal favourites.

Keep voting guys

The whole point of the poll is to make sure that some band from Hull or dare I say it ......Leeds win.

Anyway I voted for Heaven 17 - mainly because of the memories I have of that period.

But if Richard Hawley was listed on his own then I would vote for him.

Hey Boyface and Captain Sleep

we are supposed to be supporting Shefield Music in this thread, not dragging it down.

I never said they were my favourite band, I was just pointing out that they are from Sheffield, and if they can sell out the City Hall, then somebody must like them.

And BTW they probably have one of the most talented Spanish guitarists this side of the Rio Grande.

Laughing at the Sharp cuts... God they are memories of my teenage years. Playing on fargate whilst you sat in the Wimpy opposite...
Once had to interview them for my school magazine, (the height of my journalistic career) and I remember them being really nice lads. Then went on a trip with school to London the following week, and who should be playing outside (R.I.P.) Tower Records? The Sharpies! Remember bemused looks from passers by as they hugged and kissed what seemed to be this random 14 year old. I was a fan for a whole year after that!

Sorry, I was a traitor and voted outside Sheff for the Beautiful South.

Agree with Nooka and Mdesty re Chakk and Hula. I'd add another to the list-Workforce. They were around at the same time as Chakk and Hula, and released two singles, "Skin Scraped Back" and "Back in the Good Books" [Cabaret Voltaire were involved with both]. They were heavy industrial funk/experimental in style. They did two Peel Sessions too, both of which were repeated three times. Line-up was Tim Owen on Saxophone, Percussion, Keys, Tapes: Paul Wheatcroft on Vocals: Rod Leigh on Guitar, Keys: Terry Todd on Bass; and Alan Fisch on Drums, Tapes. Owen had previously dabbled with experimental music in the infamous Naked Pygmy Voles: Wheatcroft later went on to form soul duo, Ashley and Jackson: Leigh had previously been in I'm So Hollow: Todd had been in The Box: and Fisch had drummed for Cabaret Voltaire and Hula.

Hi folks

I remember going to this party in Sheffield at a good friends of mine!

These Rockers turned up at this party, it was a well mixed group of people, any way, I was chatting for a while to a friend at the same time as glancing over at these guys, I said to my friend" Those guys, they must be Def Leppard fans, they even have their hair the same etc, well Everyone burst of Laughing, It was bloody them, the back door opened and in walked this old guy, going bald, Everyone stopped laughing, it eased a little, then /I said

" I suppose thats Joe Cocker"

F*** me backwards, it was!

He had worked with my Friend as a Gas fitter and they were school chums!

Back to people of Sheffield, well, I lived near some of the human league and think the guy was totally original, one of the girls still works down at one of the recording studios, think its now Red Tape on Pastanosta, the blond hair one, forget her name!

Then there was Fon Studios on the Wicker, pulled the buildings down now, remember doing a little work for my Rasta friend Rob Gordon down there, one of most talented Music Producers around at the time, still is! Alot of famous artists use to turn upo there.

Boy George, Mica Paris etc, use to be a regualr sight.

But I remember the little coffee room they had, Rob and phoned me for an Urgent patch job on some leads, I shot down late one night, he was recording and in walks this leggy tall short haired blond girl, jeans ripped that badly that one she bent over to put something in her bag, she revealed all, no knickers, she looked like some sort of working girl, I did not ask!

She looks over to me and asks me to make her a coffee, I replied, make your own love, the kettles on the side, she said, "do you know who I am", " Nope "I replied!

Turns out, its Yazz out of Yazz and the plastic population!

We got chatting, and I found out she was afro Carribean, but bleached her skin, married to this rich guy, she had done modeling before that, she like me because i did not know who she was I think, I did not make a fuss! Ruth Joy from Crush, which by the way got to number two in the dance charts with House arrest, is another star from sheffield, although it was somewhat of a one hit wonder, she never did anything successful again after that, apart from backing tracks for Yazz.

A few others I met, but did not know that well were members of Cabaret Voltaire, and remember Hasi Fantaysi, I dont think they was from Sheffield, but you will definately know the singer from Hasi Fantaysi if your a clubber, I met up with him in Ibiza with Boy George, none other than Jeremy Healy, the DJ!

Diverging, back to stars of Sheffield, I have mixed with some of them and rubbed those shoulders, but I will have to agree with only one mention of my fav, without exception and never got the acclaim that they should have got, they should have been massive!

That is ABC!

Album

Lexicon of Love

Download some of those Classic New Romantic tunes, ABC was the epitomy of Genuis for the type of music that was around!

The guy got cancer later, I remember him having treatment at Western Park, but he made a full recovery!

My claim to fame in the pop world, necking with none other than Madonna at the Acienda in Manchester after she was booed off stage in her first vist to the UK!

Photo to prove, a few actually!

I ditched her for this skinney blond, as madonna had a few pounds on her then and I could not cope with all that netting and bangles she had on, like holding a a curtain, although for the time I was with her, she definately made me melt, very sensual, but sticking to my routine, I never desserted the boys to early on in the night, girls were for taking home and the odd snog to clinch the deal, not for wasting the night away with. You would make a big impression, promise them the earth, get their number, tell them you have alot of friends (Girls included, in case they saw you kissing later with someone else, just pass it off that they kissed you, they was drunk, if you was confronted) in the club, that way you had plenty of reserve later in the week!

Although, I must confess, I was seeing Ms Sheffield at the time, so I was been a little naughty playing away!

The 1980.s, never to be forgotton!

By the way, remember the "Limit", the DJs from there got a job hosting MTV for some years, they now are back in Sheffield, I still Sean and John who use to work the doors there!

But my fav club has to be the " Sin Bin", you had to be different to just get in there, a paradise of Fashion and music, it was the place to be seen, alot of Londoners use to travel up just for that club, Trevor Oucha Jones, the Six foot plus Drag queen that was once voted one of the most beautiful men in the world! Pete Burns was seen there from Dead or alive, also Holly Johnson.

Also Trevor oucha had a record, but it got bad reviews!

John who use to run the Sin bin, should start it all up again!

The clothes we wore then, if not made yourself, shops like >

Worlds End, Hyper Hyper in London etc, Reading Vogue in your lunch break was the norm, when showing your femimine side was all the rage of the 1980.s!

The 1980's were the Play years, no one had a serious Job, because they wasn't any, like was to be enjoyed!

How things have changed!

Life goes on!

Regards

Mark. .
