My grandad was in York and Lancaster Regiment and the ASC. I'm not sure which battalion but he ended up in Buttevant, County Cork as he married my gran there in 1920.

Hi Gevans,
Yes, my uncle was in the 9th (Service) Battalion. He was killed in action in 1917. Why do you ask?

What did you find out about the polar bears as my father in law was in the Hallamshires throughout the war?

Quite a bit.
My Father and Uncle Mick were in the Hallamshires, both Polar Bears, however uncle Mick got posted to the desert rats (quite a contrast really) where he got captured and later escaped, “long story”.
One interesting snip bit I found was the fact that the Geneva Convention didn’t seem to apply to the Polar Bears, and so it was a blessing in disguise that my uncle was wearing the Jerboa Insignia (Desert Rat) at the time of his capture.
I’m still compiling the research.
There is a photo of my fathers regiment on my site.
You can "save picture as..." then blow it up for a better view.

It sounds fascinating Coyley, I hope you will share the story at some time.
