I have been offered a house on Parsons Cross - not one I bid on, but one the council bidded on, on my behalf.

It is off Deerlands which my sister-in-law used to live on and was moved off due to demolition. I have been to view the house it is nicely boarded up with views across a small strecth of ground to a house which has recently been burnt out and just down the road from one which appears to have been fire bombed in some way as the shutters placed up are burnt and buckled.

Being in a position where the council can refuse to rehome myself and my two children and leave us homeless I would like to double check peoples opinions on the area. According to personel at the property shop they are having to put people off bidding on these houses because they are so "popular".

Opiniosn please..advice too would be handy on how they can force you into areas.

Hi Moonmaden I have lived on the cross for 40 yrs and only recently moved to my present location due to my propert being demolished.
Now there are some good people where you have been offerd in fact my best friends live on deerlands ave near to where you are.
I woul'd take the offer as this area is due some serious money very soon to regenerate the area, you will find the pub acroos the raod to be a bit of a dive but even that will get better.
You are also near to the shops on buchanan rd and not far from the school ,chaucer comp, you also are near magetson shops also.
And the area is well served by the no 53 bus which run every 10 mins,I say go for it.

(no offence to others that may live there)
I say, whoever offered you this house, you need to beat them with a very large tree.

I live at Parsons Cross and Deerlands is just down the road.

Most council places in Sheffield have good and bad bits. I like living here and would not want to change it.

Try and find out about the neighbours MoonMaiden.

As for you that slag Parsons Cross off please dont unless you live here, some of us like it and the people and get a bit pigged off you label us all with the same brush.

I used to live there but moved once the house next to us got burnt down, my nannan threatened and intimidated by yobs. I am not stereotyping the people that live on the Cross, just simply giving others the con's. You do the pros through your experience, I'll do the cons through mine. Thanx.

Thanks for the feedback folks.

I will add that my sister-in-law was relieved to get off the esate due to harrasment and the kids being scared to death after being verbally and physically threatened in the area. She had to take and collect her 12 year old son from school as he was so frightened otherwise he wouldn't go.

I very much appreciate that not everyone is a pyromaniac or with violent tendancies who live on the esate. I noted it looked like some people had bought their houses...or were just very pleased with their homes. On the other hand the number of houses that were boarded up not to mention the burnt out house at the end of the street did nothing to alleviate my fears of the area and the affect it would have on my kids.

The concerns over the actual area were at the bottom of the list as there are other issues that make it particularly unsuitable. As I said considering the fact the council could refuse to rehome us I wanted to get an overall view to make the decision on whether to accept their offer or not.
I do not think the move would benefit either myself or my kids, in fact I reckon it would be a big mistake to move my kids into the area.
If the council still think it is a suitable offer after I have submitted my reasonings then I can only assume from that and the nightmare that has been the last few weeks, that the homeless department has been set up to fill the less desireable areas with people who have no choice but to be put there. This would includes the ever popular chavs(i hate that but canne think of a better term), single parents, people recently out of prison, immigrants and those who have been moved on due to nuisance in other esatates.

Despite Barnsley having this stupid bidding system as well...it is looking very much like my only option to help maintain some emotional stability in my kids lives as the council don't seem to give a rats arse.
I know many people who live in areas like Parson Cross, my younger brother and sister were brought up in Kendray and is another HUGE reason why I do not want my kids in areas like Kendray as the main reason they survived there is because part of their family lived there - a sad sort of pack mentality.

Again I understand that not everyone in these areas is as I have described, it is sad and unfortunate that areas have to become as run down as the streets I saw.

Parsons Cross is officially sheffields most deprived area* so it is unfair to condemn people who have a lot to contend with.

*i know this from when I lived in Pitsmoor and we used to have a free community paper thru the door every few months.
In one issue it gave the results of the governments index of multiple deprivation in which every council ward in england is ranked in order of being deprived. The nearer to 1 you are the more deprived.
There are about 8,500 wards in England and the only areas in sheffield in the worst 100 in england were
Manor at about 98,
Burngreave/Pitsmoor at about 65
and Parsons Cross at 38.

Incidentally the bottom 20 was mostly made up of areas in London (Tower Hamlets/ Newham etc) and Liverpool.

Each area has good and bad points, one of my closest friends lives just off deerlands and as for the people we have met on there, we couldn't ask for better, but then again there are also some bad people we have had run ins with, i went to chaucer and only left the other year, i can't really say it's a very bad school as i had some of the best times there, it's what your kids put into the experience, getting in with the wrong crowd can steer you away from the grades you should get i should know.

Parson cross is altogether i would say a good area though, no area is perfect, just remember that!!

I find the Cross a bit depressing but I suppose it depends on what you're used to and what the alternative would be. It is a run down area although a lot of money is being invested to try and change this. As I said, I suppose it is what you're used to.

Slightly OT, but it does seem to be a policy of the housing department to put those in a desperate need in properties no one else would go within a mile of (although not knowing P/Cross that well I couldn't give an honest opinion on your offer in particular).

I have know 2 families recently (1 family - 1 friend) who have had exactly the same. In fact, my sister in law is about to move away from her council property back into a private house at twice the rent simply because she has been put in such a sh**hole by the council, and now they are refusing to do anything to it (it didn't have a single window the day they moved in and it took them 2 months to get a new bath - there was a 10cm hole in the other and they were told to stick tape over it !!!!!!).

The friend was moved into a derelict property on Windmill Lane at Wincobank, and now they are terrified to go out as people try to break in even when they are at home, their car was trashed after 2 days, and they have been threatened by other 'locals' saying that they better leave as they don't belong there (apparently the house was used as the local 'social' club until they moved in!!!) Needless to say, they are also off next week.
