View Full Version : Brian Laws - Wednesday manager Gadgetgirl 06-11-2006, 10:50 says it all :( Homeslice 06-11-2006, 10:54 At least its not the guy from Dagenham and Redbridge they were sniffing about. Still funny though! ow do 06-11-2006, 10:59 wether we like it or not hes the manager of our football club, so lets get behind him and the team and build on the last couple of weeks!!! tinsel_ninja 06-11-2006, 12:29 I know nothing about him. What kind of football does he get his teams playing? Attractive, flowing football on the deck, or hard-working hoofball cloggers? madowl 06-11-2006, 12:35 sheff star 06/11/06 Brian Laws is the new Sheffield Wednesday manager. SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY The club have agreed terms with the Scunthorpe United boss and he was unveiled at Hillsborough today as the successor to Paul Sturrock. Laws, 45, has been at Scunthorpe for almost 10 years and took them twice to promotion from League Two. He had emerged as favourite ahead of Gary Megson after Bryan Robson dropped off the shortlist. Laws took charge of Scunthorpe at Huddersfield on Saturday and his move to take over at Hillsborough was sealed in talks yesterday. He went to Glanford Park this morning so that his staff and players would be first to hear the news that he would be leaving. He regards it as a "great opportunity" and said he had had a wonderful time at Scunthorpe. "I am now looking forward to what is a really big challenge at Sheffield Wednesday," he said. Laws, who was player-manager at Grimsby when only 33, was a full back at Burnley, Huddersfield, Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest, much of it in the top flight. Latterly he played for Grimsby, Darlington and then made 18 appearances as a player after moving to Scunthorpe. He had been manager since early 1997 although there was a brief break of a month when he lost the job but was then reinstated. Laws becomes Wednesday's 22rd manager since the War and the seventh in eight years since the departure of Ron Atkinson in 1998. Chairman Dave Allen met Laws for a second time last week and speculation grew late last week that he would be the man to move in at Hillsborough. Gadgetgirl 06-11-2006, 13:07 He's a clogger, and according to the Scunny fans clueless.....should have expected it really. Camrat78 06-11-2006, 13:15 Why not keep the assistant manager on? He was doing really well. Maybe thats what we needed, someone with no baggage or ego who could get us results. CHAIRBOY 06-11-2006, 13:20 Why not keep the assistant manager on? He was doing really well. Maybe thats what we needed, someone with no baggage or ego who could get us results. My sentiments also, same players who must have decided to 'play' for him rather than Sturrock who found himself with little support at Southampton, though Beattie counts for little in my estimation. Laws can also upset players as he did at Grimsby: [edit] The "Chicken" incident On 10 February 1996, an incident after a 3-2 defeat away to Luton Town lead to the departure of Bonetti from Blundell Park. Just a month before Grimsby had beaten them 7-1 in the FA Cup third round. Apparently Brian Laws, angry after the defeat, threw a plate of chicken wings at Bonetti, who he felt did not try hard enough, leaving him with a fractured cheekbone.[2] At the time of the incident, Grimsby were doing well in the league, reaching as high as 2nd, but ended up finishing 17th. At the end of the season Bonetti left for Tranmere on a free transfer, Laws lasted until November of the next season. ow do 06-11-2006, 14:00 [QUOTE=Gadgetgirl]He's a clogger, and according to the Scunny fans clueless.....should have expected it really. think who ever you spoke to was talking out of their ar#e. he has led them to promotion, they are in with a chance of winning div1 and he is regarded by the likes of martin o'neil as one of the best young managers in the game. clogger never. have you seen scunthorpe play? they play good football ojools 06-11-2006, 18:43 Brian Laws has a lot of respect over here in Scunthorpe, and he will be missed by our supporters. He comes over to S6 with our best wishes, and I really hope that success follows, both for the club, and for Brian personally. Scunthorpe are punching well above their weight, when you bear in mind that we're only a small club, with around 5000 average gate, and very little money knocking around. The only thing that worries me is if some of our players now follow Brian down the M180, for example, Sharp and Keogh, mind you as ex Blade and Leeds respectively, they might not get a very warm welcome until they start sticking 40 goals a season in. SpeedwayDan 06-11-2006, 18:44 well he gives a good interview, lets give him a chance and get behind them once again, lets hope we can keep a manager for a while for a change WHITEKNIGHT7 06-11-2006, 19:28 iv e been an owl all my life ...lets all get behind Brian Laws because anyone from the Clough era really knows football...and yes lets hope that Sharp and Keogh want to join the no.1 team in Sheffield so we can go onwards n upwards...COME ON YOU BLUE N WHITE WIZARDZ... F. Sidebottom 06-11-2006, 19:43 Although I didn't want Sturrock to be sacked, I'll get behind him. I just wonder why, after Allen stated he wanted someone with experience of taking a team from Championship to Premier, has he chosen a man whose only experience is two promotions from the bottom league, and one relegation to the bottom league. If it doesn't work out, will Allen admit he got it wrong, or will he find some way of blaming the fans/team/rest of the board (delete as applicable). WHITEKNIGHT7 06-11-2006, 20:09 the club has my full backing at the appointment of Laws...BUT this time if MR ALLEN is once again wrong with his appointment (and for gods sake and the clubs i really do hope he isnt)then mybe himself and the board this time will know its time to move on... swfcgal 06-11-2006, 20:29 the club has my full backing at the appointment of Laws...BUT this time if MR ALLEN is once again wrong with his appointment (and for gods sake and the clubs i really do hope he isnt)then mybe himself and the board this time will know its time to move on... Hear hear! If, and only if, Laws can do something good with the club, the fans' faith in the board may be restored. Good luck Mr. Laws! We are behind you. WHITEKNIGHT7 06-11-2006, 20:40 glad to see your not just a pretty face swfcgal:love:  :D ...UP THE OWLS... Annoni_mouse 06-11-2006, 20:42 glad to see your not just a pretty face swfcgal:love:  :D ...UP THE OWLS... SWFCgal and whitenight sitting in a tree... A moment alone??? I hope he lasts longer than that lmao  Heyesey 06-11-2006, 22:28 If it doesn't work out, will Allen admit he got it wrong... It's axiomatic that football chairmen are never wrong. They pay managers and other staff to be wrong on their behalf. CHAIRBOY 07-11-2006, 06:14 well he gives a good interview, lets give him a chance and get behind them once again, lets hope we can keep a manager for a while for a change Yes, comes across very well and I like his clean-cut appearance. He comes from Wallsend (noth of the Tyne) which I can tell you makes him a genuine "Geordie" unlike many who are called that because they come from the North East desy 07-11-2006, 07:25 According to a guy on Radio Sheffield a friend of his known him for years and he doesn't think that it will be long before Allen an Laws have a few explosive words. Annoni_mouse 07-11-2006, 07:37 A moment alone??? I hope he lasts longer than that lmao  Given his excitement last night - I wouldnt bank on it:D CHAIRBOY 07-11-2006, 07:47 I saw a brief excerpt from the press conference and it came across to me from Allen's perspective: "produce or out" whereas Laws, realising it wasn't going to happen overnight, described himself as a "builder". I understand Allen's economics and he added that money for players would have to come from his own pocket and the forthcoming attitude at the AGM would determine what he was prepared to do in relation to that. It takes me back to when Derek Dooley had done sterling work with the Development Fund and was then promoted to manager - (poor decision) but all Dooley's efforts for the club, in various roles, suddenly were turned sour with a Christmas Eve sacking! As has been said earlier, we can only hope it works out for everyone concerned though I'm not so sure it will. Just look at the clubs in the Championship who came down thinking they'd go straight back up; it isn't easy, let alone with financial debts and constraints. Laws will be welcomed by the shareholders, as were Jewell,Turner and Sturrock in recent years. I heard the Turner press conference when he arrived, according to Allen - the best thing since sliced bread. Alas, not to be! lunnster 07-11-2006, 12:02 oh my god. why are we slagging him and dissing him when the dude ant even took charge of 1 match yet. lets get behind him and sing bid brians barmy army!!!!! Blade1983 07-11-2006, 12:19 heard an interview with him on Radio Sheffield this morning. He said: "I will not be making an aproach to sign any Scunthorpe players" when asked why, he said: "Because we can't afford them" :hihi: :hihi: :hihi: :hihi: :hihi: Brilliant!!!!!! So if you can't afford to sign Scunny players, what chance has he got!?!?! Up the Blades! CHAIRBOY 07-11-2006, 12:27 Nobody's "slagging him off", merely pointing out the poisoned chalice this post brings! jossyboy 07-11-2006, 12:51 so all this talk of billy sharp signing you should just forget it Blade1983 07-11-2006, 12:52 well his asking price must be £1.5m AT LEAST - so no way pigs could afford him! Robbie Loving 07-11-2006, 13:58 Who took the c*nt out of scunthorpe?? :hihi: Robbie Loving 07-11-2006, 13:58 well his asking price must be £1.5m AT LEAST - so no way pigs could afford him! Who are we stating as United's "shíte" strikers? think they ought to really consider bringin him back to the lane if u say you lot have 1st dips...but if u thought he wasnt good enought why enter a clause givin u first refusal... :suspect:  Sometimes a player is not right for you at that time (look at the liverpool situation with owen, they had first refusal on him when he left madrid) and might be worth being in the squad in the future. As it stands, all Sharp is is a League One player, he has not proved standard any higher standard. Whether he could is another matter. mr_blue_owl 08-11-2006, 14:52 Any one of our strikers would walk in to the wednesday side. Who are we stating as United's "shíte" strikers?
