China has banned the practice of leg-lengthening, a cosmetic surgery procedure popular among young professionals who believe height will help them to climb the career ladder, after a rash of botched operations has left patients disfigured.

Leg extension surgery looks like a procedure from the Middle Ages. A doctor breaks the patient's legs and inserts steel pins into the bones, just below the knees. The pins are attached to a metal frame and every day for months the patient tightens the knobs a small amount despite excruciating pain. By constantly forcing the ends of the broken bones apart before they can heal, more new bone comes to fill in the gaps.

Conjures up amusing pic of 4 foot Chinaman who is now 6 foot because his legs are 2 feet longer.

if you look at the many Chinese students in Sheffield now you will notice that many of them are actually quite tall - probably a product of better nutrition over the last couple of decades or so (also, China now has an increasingly large middle-class, which will also have access to plentiful food). So i doubt if there will be much, if any, need for leg lengthening etc in the very near future (if indeed there is any need for it now).

All the chinese people i know and work with are not at all tall, tiny in fact!

I went to China earlier this year where I towered above most people and I'm 5'8", generally they are quite small compared with Europeans. I don't have black hair either like most of them and so I stood out a mile and was constantly harassed by people trying to flog me things.

Im only 5 feet 7 so upward is the only direction for me. I get air sick on a shag pile carpet though so it looks as if im buggered.

Ah but these are the ones smuggled in the backs of lorries to work as illegals here. They are not a representative sample, since the vertically challenged are specially selected by the smugglers and gangmasters. The students are a better example of China's emerging 'beanstalk generation' - its not just China's GDP which is growing fast :thumbsup:
