View Full Version : The Seven Wonders of Sheffield
ohhshurrup 04-11-2006, 16:17 There is a current project to name the New Seven Wonders of the World (http://www.new7wonders.com/index.php)as the original list was made 2000 years ago.
What would you nominate as being on the list of Sheffield's Seven Wonders?
My two niminations are:
1. Sheffied Round Walk
2. Parkhill Flats
Maybe we can have a vote-off if anyone is remotely inetersted.
I would vote for the 'Valley of Beer'. :)

Parkhill flats are one of the seven world disasters. As for a wonder, I vote the Fat Cat !!
As for a wonder, I vote the Fat Cat !!
My nomination covers the Fat Cat, although personally I hate the place. :P

I take it you don't like rotund pussies then? Me neither :hihi:
ohhshurrup 04-11-2006, 16:43 Maybe it's just a wonder they were ever built. But, they are a massive landmark that help identify Sheffield. I'm not saying I like them, but they are pretty unique.

i wish all the odd balls who think park hill flats are some sort of iconic building instead of the ugly eyesore they are would go and live there, lets see if after 2 weeks in residence in the park hill hilton they would still say what a lovely creation it is.the wonder of the world is sheffield forum and a close second is the spar at richmond!

Maybe some people have voted it because of its architectural qualities or something, not because of the living conditions or neighbours etc.
ohhshurrup 04-11-2006, 16:53 I admit I was being purposefully controversial in order to spark debate. I pretty much hate them too, but they'd still make my list. As a structure it has raised so many emotions over the years and it's hard to miss. When people see it they express awe as in, "What the **** is that monstrosity?"
Anyway, what would be your nominations to the list, then?

what architectural qualities are there i dont see anything pleasant to look at or different from a thousand other concrete slums.
muddywolf 04-11-2006, 17:02 what architectural qualities are there i dont see anything pleasant to look at or different from a thousand other concrete slums.
Well I like looking at it from afar :p Not so nice when I get close tho.
enough about park hill i vote for the winter gardens now that is a building to be proud of.

I vote Tinsley viaduct, it looks amazing from a distance in the dark with both tiers full of traffic moving across it, red one site white other side. I'm sure some people will hate it tho.
muddycoffee 04-11-2006, 17:35 For some years I have maintined that 2 of sheffield's 7 wonders are
1) Hendersons relish
2) Bardwell's electronic shop
I think that the paternoster in the arts tower could be another
StarSparkle 04-11-2006, 17:38 what architectural qualities are there i dont see anything pleasant to look at or different from a thousand other concrete slums.
I believe the Flats are a prime example of New Brutalist architecture - I'm sure I saw a picture of the Flats in an architecture textbook once as an illustration of that type of 'architecture'.
Well named indeed - just a shame for the poor people who've had to live in a failed architectural experiment.... :gag:
StarSparkle
ohhshurrup 04-11-2006, 17:48 I think that's a good nomination. Uniquely Sheffield.

Thanks glad you agree m8 :) Friday morning driving to work in the 0degree temprture at 7am the whole donvally area was filled with smoke & steam and it looked amazing from top of Jenkin hill.

Gawd bless 'em, they must be so pleased for your words...
rubydazzler 04-11-2006, 22:10 The mysterious concrete building at the bottom of Eccie Rd by the roundabout ... that's been the subject of so many threads over the years ....

Henrietta 04-11-2006, 22:33 Niagra Falls at Middlewood Park! Especially in the summer ;)
.
pattricia 04-11-2006, 22:37 Im voting for The Sheffield City Hall. Lovely memories of dance nights, walking home in the snow after missing the last bus or waiting in the taxi queue.Blimey if thed had those fountains outside then, we`d have been the first to jump in. !

Did you ever jump in the Goodwin Fountain? or that one that used to be outside the railway station? :hihi:
pattricia 04-11-2006, 22:44 Did you ever jump in the Goodwin Fountain? or that one that used to be outside the railway station? :hihi:
Yes, theres not many places I havent jumped in when drunk. Just wish I could have a "little" jump in the new ones. :D
Don_Kiddick 04-11-2006, 22:48 1: Rovvrem = the cultural part of Sheffield
2-7: Leeds & Derbyshire = the rest of Sheffield.
Well, if Park Hill is up there, then the Ski Village must also be on the list !
Actually, for those of you who thinks Park Hill is an eyesore, then you really ought to eat your words when you see the amazing view from the inside. Seriously ! I think living in West One is worst than living in Park Hill.
StarSparkle 04-11-2006, 23:37 Gawd bless 'em, they must be so pleased for your words...
Don't read things into postings that aren't there - I'm not saying NO-ONE liked/likes living in the Park Hill flats.... but the Park Hill flats are an example of New Brutalism, an architectural style that I understand has been branded as a failure. That's architects/planners talking, not me.
StarSparkle
Its still vile though... :D

StarSparkle
I think I prefered the old brutalism myself. :heyhey:
okka north 05-11-2006, 09:45 My nominations are:
1. Moorfoot building that can probably be seen from the moon
2. The electricity substation aka the concrete construction behind Moorfoot near the roundabout.
carcrash 05-11-2006, 09:58 Bardwells.
The Wolsley Wedge cafe. The only cafe I've found in Sheffield that uses uncut bread for toast.
Heeley City Farm.
Meersbrook Park.
Muddycoffee got it spot on with Hendersons Relish (so how do I vote?) I can't imagine a world or a meatantater pie without it. When my daughter lived in Australia, I chartered ships to send the stuff out there. Mind you, she did put a bit of weight on.
The Botanical Gardens.
The view from the Bole Hills, especially when the sun is setting over the Bradfield dams.
The ski village.
Peace Gardens / Winter Gardens.
Tinsley Locks on the canal.
Kelham Island industrial museum.
Still having a city centre accessible on foot.
StarSparkle 05-11-2006, 12:06 I think I prefered the old brutalism myself. :heyhey:
LOL! You would! :D :P :hihi:

Don_Kiddick, the eighth wonder of Rotherham :hihi: (and probably the first seven as well).
coretext 05-11-2006, 12:11 save the cooling towers (near Meadowhall) they are the only good thing in Sheffield :hihi:
ara01jbb 05-11-2006, 12:27 1) Park Hill (an absolute social disaster, but it's a permanent reminder of when Sheffield City Council had balls)
2) The Arts Tower (I work in it every day, and would chain myself to it if anyone ever managed to get round the listed status to demolish it... although it's not officially 'open' I recommend you pop in one weekday to take a ride on the paternoster lift up the seventeenth floor to view Sheffield from the postgrad architecture studios)
3) The Cooling Towers (and the Go boys for their balls in setting up a competition to get ideas to save them)
4) Stag Works (on John Street in Sharrow... go in and have a peak at the gorgeous old courtyard one day... very shabby but proud home to dozens of bands, jewellers, Sandman magazine and the studio where everyone from Def Leppard to the Artic Monkeys have recorded)
5) The Brown Bear pub (on Norfolk Street) ... surely the last remaining decent city centre pub. An amazing crowd of people from all walks in there, no piped music, no fancy decor and a pint for £1.31
6) The electricity sub-station on Ecclesall Road
and finally
7) The hills, godammit, the hills.......wow. I get treated to a dozen amazing views of this beautiful city just on my way down from Crookes to the city centre. No other city has the ugliness and beauty of Sheffield or the geographic situation to appreciate it all so often.

Well said!!!
Driving into Sheffield from Derbyshire at night. You've driven through breathtaking countryside and then you turn a corner in the road, and see the awesome mass of lights - absolutely amazing.
Seriously, I’m trying to think of seven! City Hall, Winter Garden, surrounding Derbyshire countryside, it’s mix of citizens (I’m always wondering about them!), Sheffield Forum definitely. That’s five, and I need help if there are two more?
The 7th wonder of Sheffield has to be Friday.
miniminch 06-11-2006, 00:02 I think there is only one!!! (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=158305)
ohhshurrup 06-11-2006, 02:13 Derbyshire countryside. Mmmm. That isn't exactly Sheffield. You've only got four by my count :)

The view from Stanage Pole. From the Valley to the Humber.
Gadgetgirl 06-11-2006, 06:54 The 'hole in the road'...its as valid as the 'hanging gardens'
frankkettell 06-11-2006, 10:11 If you look at a pictoral history of Sheffield you will see that many beautiful old buildings have been demolished over the years. Frank

GOOD LUCK!!!!
:hihi: :hihi: :hihi: :hihi: :hihi: :hihi: :hihi:
Brunette 08-11-2006, 21:18 Firth Court - the red brick university building - its so pretty, especially when the ivy is all over it.
auctionman 09-11-2006, 00:30 i vote the sheffield steel works oops sorry maggie sorted them out didn't she along with the other british heritage the coal mines, she dint do bad when you think about it threw away numerous lives in a war over a glorified sheep farm and not content with that threw away the majorit of northern workpeoples lives .Just think if somebody had told her that the park hill flats were full of coal miners, steelworkers and argentinians they would have gone years ago
1) Park Hill (an absolute social disaster, but it's a permanent reminder of when Sheffield City Council had balls)
one of the best comments i've ever read about Parkhill
ash
firecracker 09-11-2006, 13:43 Seven wonders of Sheffield?!!!!!
Park Hill Flats - bring on the wrecking ball.
Brown Bear - full of scruffs and leaves much to be desired
Cooling Towers - bring on the dynamite and the blasting caps
Arts Tower - see Cooling Towers
As for an electricity substation, how can that be a thing of beauty (unless it has Doric columns).
Lets demolish and rebuild the Moor, and finally turn Sheffield into a 21st century city - with a few of Manchester's and Leeds's bars and shops thrown in for good measure, plus Criterion Place.
As for an electricity substation, how can that be a thing of beauty
...............plus Criterion Place.
LOL - you suggest a big square lump of concrete is ugly, then propose building a big square lump of glass, very, erm, "modern"
My Nomiations are:
Rivelin Valley
Bocking lane (for no other reason than when I 1st moved to sheffield I constantly got lost and ended up there many times)
firecracker 09-11-2006, 14:24 LOL - you suggest a big square lump of concrete is ugly, then propose building a big square lump of glass, very, erm, "modern"
Still, you must be rueing the day Sheaf House came down :hihi:
TESTPASS 09-11-2006, 14:39 Wincobank hill fort.
Still, you must be rueing the day Sheaf House came down :hihi:
Not realy, sorry.
I would like to vote for the mosk on wolsely road in nether edge.
Trully this is a wonder of sheffield and shows where our taxes are going to people who sponge of the government and block the road each friday with their taxis
Funky_Gibbon 09-11-2006, 20:05 enough about park hill i vote for the winter gardens now that is a building to be proud of.
I'd second that. Pity they hid it behind that bloody hotel.
I'd also nominate the Peace Gardens. It's great to see everyone enjoying this small oasis in the middle of town on a sunny day.
Googleberry 11-11-2006, 20:54 The Royal Hallamshire Hospital - it looks like a rusting 1950s Russian nuclear power station from behind, and not a lot better from the front, but it's so nice inside!
bladezman 11-11-2006, 21:07 1) Beautiful Down Town Bramall Lane
2) Henderons
3) Wards
4) Leadmill
5) City Hall
6) Peace Gardens
7) Town Hall
Superlative 11-11-2006, 23:23 Manor Castle......Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned there!

Dont it always seem to go.....that you dont know what u got till its gone!
andythepiema 11-11-2006, 23:47 1. The Tinsley cooling towers. Although i reckon they should be painted black and cream with a Guiness logo on the side
2. The Hendersons Relish factory. For manufacturing mana from the gods.
3. Kelham Island museum. For showing us what the place was like before Mrs Thatch
4. The Shakespeare Pub. For allowing me to get very very drunk at 16 years old
5. Manor Castle. For surviving all that time intact on the manor without squatters moving in or scratters nicking all the stones.
6. The Peace gardens. For showing that the city can get something right when it really tries too.
7. Valley Road fish and chip shop. The best fish and chip shop in the world
happyhippy 12-11-2006, 02:38 I would vote for the 'Valley of Beer'. :)
