View Full Version : British Road Service Workshop Location ?
During the fifties my father worked for British Road Service ( Sheffield) as a body builder . On the occasional holiday I would get up early in the morning and go to work with him , packed lunch and all . I spent many happy hours , building bird houses , wooden toys and such , in the workshop where he rebuilt truck/lorry bodies , which at that time had a wooden frame under the sheetmetal body . I cannot for the life of me remember where this workshop was located . Can anyone help refresh my memory , photos would also be good ?
BRS had a depot on Langsett Rd., just below the old barracks building, no idea whether there was a repair shop there though.
never wrong 04-11-2006, 17:32 it was on staniforth rd nr the staniforth hotel
B R S had a place on Staniforth rd on the left hand side going towards Darnell Just before Bacon lane Bridge Then they had a place on Eyre ST The place they had on Penistone Rd was where B and Q now standsNext to the river, but Idon't remember anybodywork shops there. I used to work there1957Iwould think the body shop was on Staniforth Rd
frankkettell 04-11-2006, 22:22 Just after the war we used to play in an area flanked by Staniforth Rd. Shirland Lane, the canal and the railway. There were a couple of allotments where pigs were kept. A big Fun Fair with all the rides and side shows used to set up there too. A large part of this area was taken up by B.R.S. I am not sure about the workshops but there was a large depot there
My Dad also worked for BRS in the body shop during the 50's and 60's.
He first worked at the Body shop on Harvest Lane which was just off Rutland Road - I think they pulled down that building and he was transfered to Staniforth Road.
Clocker - I too spent a few happy hours in Dad's office at Harvest lane - from what I remeber he was the draughtsman, designing the lorry bodies, but i think he spent some time building them as well.
The only other people I can remember was a Polish guy and the foreman who I think was called George.
Dad died a couple of months ago and when I was going through his stuff I found some old photo albums - when I next visit my old Mum I will dig them out and see if there were any of his time at BRS
Clocker - just sent you a pm

That rings a bell , Harvest lane . If I remember correctly the office was at the back of the shop with a window where you picked up your paypacket . I think the blacksmiths forge was near the front door , to the left ....its been a long time , memory is a little fuzzy on this .
My memory is also a little rusty, but I think there were two entrances for the lorries - one at the front the other down a side road with the workshop being 'L' shaped.
Again memory may be playing tricks, but I am also sure that there was another office up some stairs which was down the side of the workshop.
Its the smells that take me back - the smell of paint, or sawn wood seemed to pervade that workshop
....and everyone who worked there always seemed really happy - but that may have been a young kid's view.
My Father in Law worked at BRS for ages, so if any of you feel like owning up to your names, I will pass them onto him.........he was called POP by the way.

My Dads name was Al Tomlinson , He was Canadian . I don`t believe he was at Staniforth road though as we left for Canada 54/55 . Unfortunately he passed away 1964 so I only have my memory to go by ....fuzzy as it is .
My Dad was called Nelson Melluish but I think his work mates will have known him as Stuart Melluish - he didnt transfer to Staniforth Road until the mid 60's
Many moons ago,a school pal of mine Peter Crombie lived on Bawtry road in Brinsworth and BRS had a depot next door in someones back yard so to speak.Whether this was a reapir depot or stock yard I could not say,but Pete and I would play on the trucks and trailers until told to clear off.

Bushbaby - what you have just described really comes as no suprise - as I said earlier my memories of visiting my Dad when he was at BRS were that the workforce always seemed a really happy friendly crowd - my old man had nothing but praise for them - the bosses were great and by all accounts they really looked after the workforce. I think Harvest Lane was closed about the same time as Eyre Street - probably under some 'rationisation' - Dad tranferred to Staniforth Road and was ther for about another 6 years when they made him redundant. I remember his saying it was never the same after they closed down the smaller depots and I don't think he was too sorry when he left.
bullerboY 07-04-2009, 21:06 BRS used to have a repair shop on Worthing Rd.

Hello Owdlad
Harry Potts was my dad, sadly he passed away in 1993. Our Uncle Frank Potts worked there too.
My brother and I had visits to the depot - do we know you?
Hello Di-namic sorry to inform you but Owdlad passed away at the end of March. Check in General Discussions and there's a thread in there.

Hi,
You are one of the few people who remember the old fair ground, allotments, etc. on Staniforth Road. I remember the fairs there, long before BRS took it over. I didn't live around there but we had relatives who lived on Broad Oaks.
Another thing, do you remember the Corporation rebuilding the bridge over the railway next to fairground. Before that, the tram track used to over lap (not single track) with simple traffic lights. It took ages to complete the work. I think it was1954/55.
Regards
you can actually see into the brs depot at darnall from the railway line if you happen to get on the lincoln train, theres some trailers in the yard which are a good 20-35 yr old just stood there they havnt moved in the last 20yr that i know of
Yes I remember the 1 on Harvest lane, where I lived at #3 early 50's
