The sweet boxes in the window were sun bleached, i seem to remember an old lady ran the place. societygirl 30-06-2007, 14:15 I can remember the sweet shop and the faded sweet boxes in the window, it was just opposite the school on Greystones Road and a Mrs Scotson used to run it. There was a greengrocers shop, I cannot recall the name of the family who owned it but I seem to recall a Judy Bird going to Greystones School so she may have been the same family. Powerage 11-07-2007, 18:18 I remember Mrs Scotson we used to go there all the time. I remember the greengrocers and Judy Bird but I didnt know her I think she was a couple of years older than me. I remember a Mr Taylor who ran a grocers on the corner of Ranby Rd I think it was just up from Mrs Scotson. One of my best friends dad ran the fishmongers shop if you remember that. Its quite upsetting actually to think it used to be a thriving shopping centre and now there is nothing left. pensionipper 12-07-2007, 08:31 Hi Powerage - the fishmongers was Jacksons. Do you remember the cobblers shop near the bottom of Greystones Road - Dixons? Prior to that he had a shop on Ecclesall Road near the bottom of Walton Road. He told me that there used to be a dozen cobblers shops between the old Arcade and Hunters Bar, but that wasn't yesterday! Powerage 12-07-2007, 23:43 Hi Powerage - the fishmongers was Jacksons. He told me that there used to be a dozen cobblers shops between the old Arcade and Hunters Bar, but that wasn't yesterday! I dont remember the cobblers that must have been before my time. I remember there being another sweetshop/grocers near the bottom which closed about 73/74 ish. There were loads of sweet shops when I think about it there was also one on Tullibardine near the school. The shops all started going when they opened Challenge! does anyone remember it before it changed names it is currently Somerfields. My mum got a part time job there when it opened and I had a saturday job there at 16 until I left school. pensionipper 13-07-2007, 09:21 Hi again Powerage, I used to take my son to the sweetshop on Tulli. every school morning at one time; and my wife worked part-time on the cheese counter at Challenge! Do you remember Fretwell Downings bakers that was just on Rustlings Rd? They haven't been there for years but I believe they are still in business. Yes I certainly remember Fretwell Downings my dad used to buy different flavoured battenburgs from there for our Sunday tea they had a lovely chocolate one, they had the most gorgeous cakes. I think they are still going but are no longer at Greystones what a pitty! kegg1e 20-08-2008, 19:37 The sweet shop & grocers opposite the school on Tulli was McKegg's (my dads shop). Do you remember the other shops on Greystones? Starting at the Ecclesall Rd end by Blair Athol Rd. The Chippy, Mrs Deeleys (Hardware), Stan Herriotts Garage (I think his son Steve took over). Opposite there is/was the cottages where to the left of the row was the cobblers shop, (sorry but I can't remember his name), then there was an old man who sold newspapers (I recall his name was Dan Dabbs). Then the PWD depot. The off licence on the corner of Ranby Rd. I can't be sure of his name at the moment, but I think it was John Willie Hargreaves. On the opposite corner of Ranby was Mr Peats butchers. I remember the greengrocers as being owned by the Armitages, then the bakers, a haberdashery shop and Barry Jackson (fishmonger), Thompson (chemists) and Mrs Scotsons. Reading your posts certainly brought back some memories :) Steptoad 21-08-2008, 09:33 Do you remember Fretwell Downings bakers that was just on Rustlings Rd? They haven't been there for years but I believe they are still in business. If I understand correctly Fretwell-Downings moved into computers and I think have or had an office block on the old quarry near the bottom of Greystones Rd. I occasionally served Mrs. FD (as her chauffeur called her) in the bakery I worked in in the 90s. Steptoad 21-08-2008, 09:39 There was a mini-market on Greystones Rd in the 70s, the first one I'd ever heard of, run by a Spanish family. I never went in, but my friends who did said the owners followed them around the cramped space inside keeping an eye out for any misdemeanors. They also complained that sweets were often discoloured or showing signs of having been melted and tasted of paraffin (from the winter heaters.) pete_fcs 21-08-2008, 10:23 I can remember a little old sweet shop on there when i visited a friend over 20 years ago. The sweet boxes in the window were sun bleached, i seem to remember an old lady ran the place. there was a sweet shop across the road from greystones infants. i used to go in it before school and spend one pence on a bag of sherbert. because all the sherbert stuck like mad to the bottom of the paper bag, you could make it last all morning! :) hutch 21-08-2008, 11:00 Thomas Henry Bird had a greengrocers at 58 in the 30's and 40's a Mr Snowden had the shop in the early 50's. manxcat 28-08-2008, 17:03 The off licence on the corner of Ranby Rd. Was there are off licence on the corner of Ranby Rd up until a few years ago? I seem to remember a pretty run down looking shop there not that long ago? Powerage 02-09-2008, 10:07 There was a mini-market on Greystones Rd in the 70s, the first one I'd ever heard of, run by a Spanish family. They also complained that sweets were often discoloured or showing signs of having been melted and tasted of paraffin (from the winter heaters.) It was run by the Sanchez family the two girls where a couple of years younger than me at school. Mrs Sanchez still lives there I think even though the shop closed a few years ago I used to see her walking up and down Greystones Road until my mum moved away from there last year. I know no one used to like going in the shop as Mr Sanchez wasnt the friendliest of shop keepers! I think there was another shop near there or maybe the same one which used to be run by the Raynor family we used to buy those frozen lolly drinks from it i cant remember what they where called. royalscam 02-09-2008, 10:42 If I remember correctly, was there not a murder close by the Greystones road shops, and the young couple living in one of the shops were convicted? This would be about 1984. Powerage 02-09-2008, 12:29 If I remember correctly, was there not a murder close by the Greystones road shops, and the young couple living in one of the shops were convicted? This would be about 1984. Yes there was I think it was about 82ish it wasnt on Greystones it was one of the shops on Ecclesall Road I can not remember the ladies name who they murdered but she used to shop and might have also worked at Challenge I think as my mum knew her and I remember serving her when I worked there. I also remember the couple who murdered her loudly proclaiming on the bus one night how they were being persecuted by the police who were trying to frame them! SheffNiner 02-09-2008, 15:41 Is the shop on corner of Greystones and Blair Athol road opposite the chippy still open? when I moved away about 2 and half years ago it was on the verge of shutting as the old boy was finding hard to get around scargill 02-09-2008, 21:15 Did there used to be co-op opposite the Highcliffe pub? shanes teeth 02-09-2008, 21:27 Is the shop on corner of Greystones and Blair Athol road opposite the chippy still open? when I moved away about 2 and half years ago it was on the verge of shutting as the old boy was finding hard to get around It is still open-just.It seems he runs it more as a hobby than a business. But he can still find what you want or talk you into an alternative ! kegg1e 03-09-2008, 12:29 Did there used to be co-op opposite the Highcliffe pub? Yes there did. I think it closed in the late 50's or early 60's. Gordonb 03-09-2008, 23:55 My father in law used to work at the co-op oppositethe Highcliffe. It was one of the typical shops where they put your money into an overhead container and pulled the handle which sent it off to a cashier sat in a glass fronted booth. She then sorted out your change and fired it back to you. I seem to think it had closed by the time we used to make a weekly trip upto the Highcliffe to the Folk Club to see the likes of Billy Connelly, Gerry Rafferty and Ralph Mctell etc in the late 60's ~Does anybody remember a Knitting wool shop further down Greystones Road, possibly run by a Mrs. Clarke? Would be about the mid - late 50's Lillie 04-09-2008, 08:37 Gordonb....do you remember a lady that worked behind the bar called Dora? She lived next to my Grandparents on Greystones Road. algy 04-09-2008, 09:32 Hi again Powerage, I used to take my son to the sweetshop on Tulli. every school morning at one time; and my wife worked part-time on the cheese counter at Challenge! Do you remember Fretwell Downings bakers that was just on Rustlings Rd? They haven't been there for years but I believe they are still in business. Fretwell Downing was eventually run by the 2 sons. One was into computing and set up the computer business next to Somerfields, the other developed the food side into a catering concern for 'posh do's'. Gordonb 04-09-2008, 11:26 To be honest I don't. Lillie 04-09-2008, 11:59 Ah well worth a try! My Grandad was Tom Andrew..did you know him? Gordonb 04-09-2008, 18:28 Fraid not Lillie shanes teeth 04-09-2008, 19:02 Gordonb....do you remember a lady that worked behind the bar called Dora? She lived next to my Grandparents on Greystones Road. I remember Dora. She had to be watched . She always used to try to clear your drinks off before they were finished ! Mind you she used to serve us when we were about 15 so I can't complain really. Was that when Brian (Scarlet ) O'Hara was the landlord ? Lillie 04-09-2008, 20:16 I don't know who it would have been as I was much too young to go in there! I would stay with my Nan whilst Grandad went for a drink! Dora used to buy us Thorntons easter eggs each year...they were the poshest ones we got! sparra 25-03-2009, 00:06 hi folks i was bornat143 greystones rd next door to the highcliff the shop at the front of us was a sweet shop owned by underhills who had a newsagents shop on ecclsall rd next was a wool shop and then a bread shop last one was a green grocers owned by bert wilson and his wife bert did a local milk round as well across the road were some garages owned by malthouses the builders, struthe that takes me back a bit 60yrs ago since i arrived in the world. hotrock 25-03-2009, 12:30 My mother Pat was the manageress of the Victoria wine shop on Rustlings rd, back in the 70's - 80's, i remember going to Fretwell Downings for cakes etc, & i remember the sweetshop opposite my old school, Graystones, & i remember a sweet shop on the corner of Rustlings rd & Ecclesall rd. househunter 25-03-2009, 15:39 If I remember correctly, was there not a murder close by the Greystones road shops, and the young couple living in one of the shops were convicted? This would be about 1984. The murder was at the then Freezer food centre on Carrington Road, which is now an interior design shop across from plumbing merchants. Fretwell Downings bakers truned into Vernons the bakers which has now gone :( The off license on Ranby Road was run by Pete and Sue, think Sue did one, so Pete closed the shop. Scotsons was known for giving extra sweets and was a proper traditional sweet shop "quarter of chewy nuts please" but unfortunately nearer the end due to her age and eventual death the shop closed, which was a shame as i'm sure it will still make a lot of kids happy. I too can remember the butchers, fruit shop, wool shop and fishmongers, which at one time became a hair dressers and a sandwich shop? Used to get a rabbit's tail or foot from the butchers when I was a kid. I have fond memories of Greystones Video, always had the latest video games and we could rent 18 cert videos when we were 12, then pop into Rounds news for some Mr Freezies. And I remember Sanchez's shop as we used to get our plastic sledges from there. hotrock 25-03-2009, 15:59 i also remember something about the lady that was murdered, i remember that she was called Pat, i used to deliver her barley wine to her from my mothers shop, & she always gave me & my brother a tip, we even got a remote control toy speed boat once. |
