View Full Version : Where can I get an allotment ebuygum 04-11-2006, 10:20 and how much are they? dee1212006 04-11-2006, 16:46 depends on the size of the plot, i think there usally about £15 a year plus water rates, but u get a 50% discount if you are on benefits if you go to google.co.uk and type in allotments sheffield the council website will come up. all the info should be on there, hope this helps D  RobD1 04-11-2006, 18:48 The info you need, you'll find here: http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/out--about/parks-woodlands--countryside/allotments Depends on where you are looking really as well, over this side of the city (Crookes) there aren't many vacant plots unless you want to take on a really overgrown plot pn a neglected site. It costs us £27.50 for the year including water. I think they send the bills out in January, Rob mc55 04-11-2006, 20:41 mine (Meersbrook) costs £20 for allotment and £20 for water per year. We get tonnes of wood chippings and leaves dropped for free. RobD1 06-11-2006, 08:43 mine (Meersbrook) costs £20 for allotment and £20 for water per year. Rob mc55 07-11-2006, 20:08 hee hee, see NOW you're interested in Meersbrook !!! they are dumped regularly in the carpark - assume they come from the council run parks etc. mc - lonely in Meersbrook , but don't worry about me, sniff I'm gonna have my own party    neeeeeeeeeek 07-11-2006, 21:21 Vacant sites available at:- Ouse Road - Darnal Victoria Road Landcroft Soaphouse lane The last 3 are in woodhouse area. There's a car park on the map for our site, but it's obviously been many, many years since that was accessible - nice to see the council are on the ball there. So can we come over to Meersbrook and steal some of the bark chippings? :) mc55 08-11-2006, 20:11 Got a BIG gate too .... come too late 'n you'll get locked in :help: Not sure whether all of the car parks have chippings, but certainly the entrance from Cartfield Ave (just beneath the bus/taxi gate) does (although we seem to have more leaves than anything else at the moment). Can't see why anyone would object as they're delivered by the council for allotmenters use. I'll bring a lorry :) I'll email the beloved allotment office to check first, you do pay more than us, maybe that's why?! Yog Sothoth 20-11-2006, 10:32 mine (Meersbrook) costs £20 for allotment and £20 for water per year. We get tonnes of wood chippings and leaves dropped for free. I noticed there seem to be lots of abandoned plots at Meersbrook allotments, on the downhill side, towards the woods. Some of them are pretty overgrown. Would I have to clear these myself if i took one on? I presume there wouldn't be a waiting list for these? Becky B 20-11-2006, 17:16 Isn't the allotment office in Meersbrook? :hihi: don't go for rivelin, you'll need some heavy machinery to get anywhere with them. Or a small army.... mc55 20-11-2006, 22:15 Hi YS, yes there look to be quite a few abandoned plots at Meersbrook, but then again its a huge site. I was offered one in the woods when I first applied, but turned it down and asked to go on the waiting list for a better one. It only took a month or so and although it was very overgrown when I took it on, you can tell its been well looked after in the past. You need to be careful that you don't end up with a shady plot (downhill slope / trees - big no no). The ones closer to the gate / car park appear to be less likely to be targetted by vandals. Bob the ranger is available to help strim the allotment, but unfortunately doesn't do digging (and also seems to have very little vegetable knowledge considering his job ! ) Yog Sothoth 21-11-2006, 09:19 Is vandalism a problem then? I notice there's lots of ways in from the woods - suppose the kids come through from there. Are you allowed to put up fences and barby wire on top? :suspect: mc55 21-11-2006, 20:16 I've been there a year and not had any issues, but my plot is fairly secure and I'm close to the main gate, which is usually locked at night, but where there's a will, there's a way. Quite a few neighbours have greenhouses on their boundary, with no protection to the glass and don't seem to have had any issues either - I think the tip is to be close to the busier areas. The agreement that you have to sign states that your plot will be enclosed with a privet hedge, no higher than 5ft ... no barbed wire supposed to be used ... |
