Should hermaphrodites have seperate Public Toilets?
Have hermaphrodites got the same rights under the discrimination act?
Do employers have to provide suitable facilities for their needs?

Who the heck are they ? :suspect:
Phanerothyme 04-11-2006, 12:16 AM He means hermaphrodites, people with 'dual' genitalia.

Hermophrodites are People who have both Male and Female reproductive organs.

We have just been arguing about the correct to spell it, so is it spelt 'hermaphrodites' ?? No dictionary and google gave both spellings?

Someone with a mixture of both male and female reproductive organs.
My understanding is that hermaphrodites live their life as a male or female, depending on which of the organs are the most developed at birth and the wishes of the parent. An operation is then performed to remove the redundant organs. Separate toilet facilities are not necessary. I would think that they wouldn't wish to be singled out either. There is a lot of stigma attached to the condition and like anyone else they just want to get on with their life "normally".

Can remember nursing an old man on a geriatric ward once who was one.Felt sorry for him/her as they didnt know what ward to put him on.

It's based on the story of Hermes and Aphrodite so Hermaphrodite is the generally accepted spelling.
King Rat 04-11-2006, 12:27 AM Apparently hermaphrodites are more common now and not all can have a operation to have which ever organs removed.

Thanks, I will take you're word for it. How do you edit the title?

sharkw 07-11-2006, 04:00 PM why not use the disabled toilet ?
sharkw 07-11-2006, 04:01 PM not a disabled toilet in the sense that it is "out of order"
sharkw 07-11-2006, 04:02 PM after all you are only going to do one or two things ( in theory )
nick2 07-11-2006, 04:03 PM I would have expected Sid to have started this thread.
camping_gaz 07-11-2006, 04:05 PM it wouldn't hurt to ave a third communal toilet for both genders surprising how much use it would get when others are full
LordChaverly 07-11-2006, 04:29 PM I met a transvestite at a conference recently. I actually thought he looked quite butch-looking, despite the female clothing and make-up. Anyway, purely by accident I found myself in conversation with him during the break. He asked me where the loos were and instinctively I directed him towards the gents. However, he walked straight past the gents and went into the ladies.

Well, naturally I didn't probe the matter too closely by making personal inquiries, but for all know he/she could have been in the process of gender transition

do you recon theres sensation felt in both parts
babychickens 07-11-2006, 04:55 PM hermaphrodites don't necessarily have one variety of organ removed, actually. there was a lot of fuss about some twins in the states in the 50-70s, if i recall... enforced gender assignment left them both killing themselves. i think a lot of cases now are left to develop until adulthood to see which gender is prevalent following and during puberty (actually, a lot of hermaphrodites don't even know until puberty).
look up guevodoces if you're interested - think the spelling is right. it means 'penis at 12' - ie the boys of a particular population are treated as girls until the hit puberty and grow winkies due to an enzyme deficiency thatcorrects itself at puberty...possibly aromatase, but my memory is currently a wee bit dodgy.
see, i don't have a phd in gonad development for nothing. quite literally, it's a phd in b*****ks.

As a society these people can't be ignored to the extent were a lot commit suicide, waiting for miracle breakthrough's in Medical science is not necesarily an option.
How come we don't cater for Hermaphrodtes in this wonderful world of equal oppurtunities?
babychickens 07-11-2006, 08:02 PM unless you are a hermaphrodite, how do you know to what extent there is already provision for them? whilst by definition they are a combination of genders, there is usually one predominant one, which can be encouraged and the other supressed using appropriate hormone therapy. part of the problem is knowing which is the right one, though - hence the need for waiting until the person involved is old enough to choose wisely. obviously gender preference can interfere - how do you decide whether you're straight or gay if you don't know whether you're male or female, and vice versa?
incidentally, you can be hermaphrodite and completely fertile, so even if you have kids you might still be hermaphrodite...doen'st necessarily do you any harm, although i think there may be some combinations of bodyparts that lead to higher rates of certain cancers (in the same way that cryptorchid males - undescended testes - have higher rates of germline-derived tumours, a hermaphrodite with mostly female parts but an undescended testis might have the same problem).
male and female not such a straight forward matter, after all...

Just had to do a 3 day course on equal oppurtunities as part of my new job and it was very boring but it covered all aspects of discrimination except Hermophradites, and until the hermophradite can start using hormone therapy or decides which sex to choose etc what are they supposed to do?
