View Full Version : The Big 'BORAT' movie debate!
So, It's out tonight. Been described as racist, hilarious, anti-semitic and homophobic... Have you seen it yet or will you be watching it?.. I will definately be watching it as I think Borat is the funniest thing thats happened in comedy for a long while.
Hopefully be going this weekend, so will add my review later. What are your thoughts on the Khazakistani journalist thats caused so much distress....... and mirth!:hihi:
Jagshemash!
Minesadouble 03-11-2006, 21:26 I think he's excellent and people need to lighten up ....

sufc_tom 03-11-2006, 21:39 Great sketches, apparently the movie is absolutely mental and so so funny. I was watching the trailer the other day where he was at a rodeo and was guest to sing the national anthem...only to belt out Kazakhstan's NA, I know how serious the yanks are about patriotism and respect to the "home of the free" so I can't wait to see the movie just to see what reaction footage they got.

It's always funny to watch the americans getting the p*ss took out of them! on that point alone it's worth watching. :hihi: :hihi:

When it comes to politics and stuff, Americans aren't generally light hearted (apart from the genius Daily Show on E4).
Check out Borats response to the people who think he is taking the p*ss!

I think hes very funny.Didnt get it at first but now find him excellent . Hes so funny when hes talking to the Yanks. :hihi:
Its cringeworthy but hilarious
waa waa wao very nice, hilarious - he does push it a little - hes a jew in disguise
BrainThrust 04-11-2006, 01:00 waa waa wao very nice, hilarious - he does push it a little - hes a jew in disguise
He's not exactly disguising the fact with a name like Sacha Baron Cohen, I expect he's proud of his religion. Thats why his material which some claim as anti-semitic works, he's just poking fun at those who actually think that, showing how idiotic it really is.
Wilf
Brainthrust - just a quick question away from the subject for a mo.....
That face in your avatar - is it the devil dog that chases the ghostbusters in the first movie?..
Its not that bad, the racist part was kind of bad.. But depends how serious you take yourself really..
KJ_VENOM 04-11-2006, 17:55 can a jewish person be anti-semetic and i know that many people were know as semites but in this case its obviously in the jewish connection?
It seemed too scripted to me. A lot of it seemed really feigned and planned etc. All the stuff with members of the public has always been brilliant, but that's pretty much where all the comedy comes from from me :)

Ditto, the pamela anderson incident for instance, or the jesus thing..
PinkxTinks 04-11-2006, 23:34 i think he is soooo annoying
i thought it was suberb
...so you sayin the man who stick rubber dildo up my anus is homosexual
superb
AJ sheffield 05-11-2006, 12:28 I hate Cohen, he is painfully annoying. I much prefer the man who paved the way for Cohen character style, Paul Kaye (Dennis Pennis).
Paul Kayes new series Strutter starts soon on MTV...excellent.
I saw it tonight, thought it was brilliant. There were lots of cringe worthy scenes but the best one is where the senator starts eating the home made cheese then finds out the source of milk. Pure genius.
I’m not sure how much of it was scripted, the scenes with the prostitute were, as she was clearly an actress with what happened (tried to phrase it in a way that it isn’t a spoiler, if you’ve seen it you’ll understand, I hope). I think Pamela herself knew about what was going to happen but her entourage didn’t.
LordChaverly 05-11-2006, 23:50 What is especially cringe worthy about Cohen is that he has made his name lampooning ethnic groups or nationalities of one kind or another. If however a gentile was to lampoon jews, or to stereotype them in the way Cohen does to other groups, it would not be very long before he or she was accused of rabid anti-semitism.
Plain Talker 06-11-2006, 10:32 SBC and his creations are about as funny as mumps!
"one trick pony", is a phrase that comes to mind.
MickeyBarnes 06-11-2006, 10:39 i saw it last night, and i laughed at all the interviews and most of his acted bits.
I must say, Cohen is so, so brave. To be able to do the things he did and keep a straight face was really a good.
I really enjoyed it.
ps. I think Pamela Anderson knew what was happening too.

PT I totally agree with you, he's about as funny as a case of rabies at a dog's home. The problem at the moment (Grumpy Old Git syndrome coming on) is that people have been starved of real comedy for so long that they find this banal "insult innocent people" garbage amusing. Surely this is only Ali G in another format.
MickeyBarnes 06-11-2006, 11:24 Yea but Ali G is funny - so Ali G as a different format is still funny
mr.blaze 06-11-2006, 11:25 The mans a genius, pure and simple :D

Well I'm happy that Mr Baron-Cohen isn't our only example of comedy. I rate him alongside Little Britain as classic examples of alternative comedy. Comedy = funny, and the alternative to that is not funny.
I'll see it when it comes out on DVD, he's pretty funny.

Isn't that what Basil Fawlty did in every eppisode ?
NEKRO138 06-11-2006, 13:51 I like Borat. Sacha has balls for doing this character in some of the places he's took it. I'm off to see the film either tonight or tomorrow. Can't wait.
I saw him on the Jonathan Ross show the other week. He managed to make Wossy look embarrassed: which is quite a feat!

LIttle Britain is ****e though, Cohen is much more talented.

who do you find funny pitsmoorlad? or are you antifun?

He seemed to make a bit to much effort on that show for me!
sheff_minx 08-11-2006, 16:40 The film is hilarious!! I went to a freebie preview about a month ago and was determined that I wouldn't like it as I'm not an overly huge fan of Ali G... however I was in stiches from the beginning!! Agree with GazE that the milk/cheese scene was hilarious! The look on the senators face is absolutely classic!!!
Very very clever - not many people could carry off what he does. Surprised he survived the States.
Really looking forward to seeing this -
all my mates have said it's hilarious!

Its down to personal choice. I bet you haven't even seen the film.
squeakyclean 10-11-2006, 13:32 It takes alot to amuse me, but I must admit I enjoyed it, and found it very funny.
I cant believe I've still NOT seen it yet!!! AAAGH!.... ...because of one thing or another - mainly work!! I'll be there on Sunday! ( hopefully )
Anyway, here's a clip of the first few minutes of the film for all those who, like me are still waiting to go and watch it.
First 4 mins of Borat the Movie! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJDNOQ1oNlM)
spyro2000 12-11-2006, 18:56 Funniest move ive seen in years. I love the way it is so not politically correct, thats what makes it so funny.
sufc_tom 13-11-2006, 17:19 Saw it last night and it was fantastic...I think a few of the scenes were preordained but either way it took some balls.

Did you go to the 8.30 showing at Cineworld by any chance?? .. If so, I was laughing along with you mate!:hihi:
This has got to be the funniest film of the decade! the fight scene in the hotel bedroom had me holding my stomach for laughing!.. People were laughing before the film had even started - at the film certificate because of the stupidly long name.
Sacha Baren Cohen must be the luckiest man alive to have come out of that unscathed, some of those Americans at the Rodeo were baying for blood!
To watch this you have to leave all political correctness at home, it's absolutely brilliant.
Utterly, utterly hilarious. I can say with certainty that I have never laughed so much at a film. With lines like "My moustache still smells of your testes", how could it fail?
I saw it last Thursday, wasn't expecting what I saw... Brilliant!
Especially the part where he is with the women's group, 'Come on Pussycat, smile for me' :hihi:

:hihi: I liked that bit too!
And when that other woman was saying something and he said 'I did not know what this man was saying to me....' :hihi:
I loved it and didnt think I would.
:hihi: I liked that bit too!
I could be tempted to watch it again..
'Why you call the Police?, did the retard escape?' :hihi:
Birth-Peace 16-11-2006, 11:46 I saw it last night and thought it was hysterical. Loved it.
Although the bit when he was talking to the rodeo guy was terrifying, terrifying that people can think and believe that.
"We are strong supporters of your War of Terror" To rampant cheers from the crowd. Dumbasses
My hobbies include ping pong, disco dance.. and Sex, is nice!
I didnt like when him and his friend were erm... fighting :gag:

Azamat, i can still taste your testes! :hihi:

:hihi: I bet you loved it really!
And just to recap on the film they showed it again :gag:
superdai 16-11-2006, 13:57 great film!!!
the hooker was an obvious actress, but the rest were genuine, just solely on the reactions from when he returns from the toilet (shant spoil it), but she served a purpose, to bring out a reaction in the upper class american folks. Same as with Pam, obviously in on it, but fun to see the reaction of everyone else, hence the point.
Either way, it doesnt matter if it was staged in places, was still hilarious in adundance. Like any film really, some people are gonna like it, others are going to want to use it line a bird cage.
PimpDaddy 16-11-2006, 15:07 The film is sick. Loved it.
Absolutely brilliant film....the running of the Jews!! Oh lordy, I thought I was going to burst!!
Or the bit where they were at the B&B and he did a little video diary type piece.....clutching his money like a good un!
Legendary film, we saw it yesterday and it was utterly brilliant. . don't take it seriously and you'll laff till you wet. . xx
BoroughGal 22-11-2006, 06:26 I saw it last week - was howling with laughter.
I was disappointed (only a little) at the scripted bits too, but understood it as Superdai did, that the emphasis was less on Pam, more on the reaction of the people in the queue. But still I found the totally inscripted bits funniest. Like the stoopid frat boys. Heh heh! :D :hihi:

I was cringing with embarrassment at the fat, mouthy one. How dumb was he! :gag:
BlueAngel 23-11-2006, 14:35 I'm not a big fan of Borat I prefer his alter ego Ali G:hihi:
Re: the drunken frat boys. Just so everyone knows, USC in this case is the University of South Carolina. NOT the University of Southern California.
Lestat, the fat mouthy one is now SUING (http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/1113061borat1.html#) Borat. How dumb was he? Apparently dumb enough to sign a release without reading it.
This (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15175836/site/newsweek/) article is interesting. I didn't care for the movie, but my daughter and her friends thought it was hilarious, so there you go.
:) Sierra
Check out this angry american dude!...he's trying to vent his anger in his review for Borat. He actually states:
'As someone who wrote his Cambridge thesis on the American civil rights movement, Sacha Baron Cohen should know that (and probably does). Or to put it slightly more bluntly: I don’t think a Brit is in any position to lecture me on race relations, thanks very much. Instead of making yet another movie about what a racist hellhole America is, my British friend, how about you stop bashing Pakis and go brush your teeth? If you’ve got a problem with that, slip into something red and we’ll meet you back at Yorktown—we’ll be the guys dressed in the buckskins. If you’ve got a problem with that—and I can see how you might—go boil something, you smug limeys, or else we won’t lend you any more warships the next time Germany attacks.'
american journolist reviews Borat. (http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=18065)
I thought the film was hilarous, I went with a couple of friends we were all in creases for most of the film... the naked fight scene was a bit unpleasent but highly funny... the fat man is so fat they never had to blur his tackle out haha
Think the guy's truly revolting!
