Hi,
The house i live in is a big old victorian house-its mid terrace but not double glazed (and because of the high ceilings the windows are massive) and it gets really cold.

Does anyone have any advice on addtional heaters we could use to warm the place up without costing a fortune in electricity?
And also where's best to get them from?

Thanks,
Gemma

The first thing you need is one of those companies that refurbish your existing sash windows to make them much less draughty (such as ventrolla) then you need a good heavy pair of curtains - lined of course ;)

A ceiling fan will help to bring the heat down off the ceiling (where heat likes to gather  )

You'll find it's instantly warmer, and your heating bills will be far less scary :D

(Our ceilings in Glasgow were 12-14 ft  )

We're only renting for the year so portable heaters we can take with us seem a better idea - we might have to start taping the curtains to the wall to stop cold air getting in and out!!

You think gas heaters would be the best option? do they throw out a lot of heat, and are they safe?

portable calor gas heaters are the cheapest and most efficient solution we found ;)

make sure you don't let the room get too stuffy though, and don't go to sleep with them on - the gas needs oxygen to burn

If you get curtains from ebay or make them yourselves having bought roll ends or remnants you can also take them with you

If you put it on full for a few mins first thing then turn it down it will easily heat any room in most houses and cos it doesn't need a flue it's virtually 100% efficient. They all have oxygen analysers on them so if anything goes wrong and there's any potential danger they cut off well before it.

I got an oil-filled electric radiator for a while. I thought it's more energy efficient, then again, I didn't know they do gas heaters. I use to set my heater on a timer, so it goes in waves, and the oil still retains the heat after a little while.

I don't know which option is cheaper. I got mine from Homebase in the Meadowhall retail park.

Hi

We use a covering to help seal the windows in our house. I think it is called 'Storm glaze'. You can get it from Wicks or Homebase. It really makes a difference in cutting out the drafts! We will also be investing in some draft excluder strips as well!
