View Full Version : Guy Fawkes dropped from bonfire night
LordChaverly 02-11-2006, 12:44 Apparently, its not just poor Guy who is getting dropped by Hackney Council - its also the bonfire as well. Both are being replaced by a Bengali festival involving a fireworks display funded by the Council. Bonfire night of course no longer has any political significance, but it has a cultural significance in England. Replacing it with a Bengali festival seems to me to unnecessarily provocative. Even George Galloway is supposedly upset.

Robbie Loving 02-11-2006, 12:50 By the way your Avatar makes you look like a rapist.! :hihi: :hihi:
He could claim for hurt feelings now and get £1100 in court :D
Ermmm .... if you get rid Guy Forkes then there is nothing special about 5th November so the council should have saved their money and pretend nothing happens on that date.
What are they replacing Santa with?
charlie9865 02-11-2006, 13:11 I think this is insane what is coming to the world.
My son is 5 and has been learning about king james and guy fawkes, and he has really enjoyed it he even came home gasping on and on about it.
Insanity i say its like history is being made a distant memorey.
As a child i used to love Bonfire night, then i learned that Guy Fawkes was a Yorkshireman, and his aim and that of his fellow conspirators was to destroy the Monarchy and the Ruling class.
Further more he was a Catholic.
I never seen it the same light since. We should be expressing our sympathy at his failure, not his capture!
Imagine how different the world would have been had they suceeded.
The future of Europe and therefore the entire world would have been changrd completely.

Its our history. As I said earlier, although it now has no political significance, it is quite an important cultural festival which is celebrated all over the country and which links us to our past. I think replacing this festival with a Bengali festival is tantamount to saying that 'we are not interested in your culture or history and have no desire to participate in your cultural events'. It hardly serves the cause of integration. It seems to me like another example of the pernicious effects of multiculturalist doctrine, which, if carried to its logical conclusion, would turn our country into little more than a geographical expression.
I would be interested to know who were the key decisionmakers behind this. Is it yet another example of pre-emptive grovelling by a local council or does it represent the genuine wishes of the Bengali community in Hackney? Either way, its a bad decision in my view.
pk014b7161 02-11-2006, 15:01 its about time they replaced the hackney council set of t****
Don_Kiddick 02-11-2006, 16:26 Could we compromise & replace Fawkes with an effigy of Bin Laden or even his unilimbed cycloptic sidekick ?
More relevant & upto date, integrating cultures etc

Why make do with effigies?
Moreover, they deserve to be hung, drawn and quartered as well.

Thats why I come on the SF - the camaraderie.

You mean look-a-likes?
It could be called The X-Jihad & shown on dumbed down TV. :hihi:

As far as I am aware, only one rapist has ever worn similar headgear, so it hardly a good example of a sartorial stereotype. Bankrobbers, burglars, Crimean war soldiers, members of special forces, international terrorists, mountaneers or Arctic explorers in my view fit the stereotype better.
"Our sole aim is to stage an exciting event - on the traditional Fireworks Night - that will attract the interest of as many people as possible. Since introducing the themed events four years ago, visitor numbers have increased from 3,000 to a massive 23,000 people at last year's event. Let's judge the event by how much people enjoy themselves on the night."
So, what were the previous themes in the last 4 years ?
CockneyMafia 02-11-2006, 16:47 I like the line
"We did Guy fawkes last year"
Brilliant.

I agree with you and artisan. As a kid,mum and dad always encouraged us to make a guy(with a bit more effort than a binbag and mask  )
However,we always made it look like the primeminister at the time.Maggie thatcher burned really well, but my personal fave was the 'john major Guy' as his features were easy to make out of papermachier!
Ive always thought it made more sense to burn a poiltician on nov 5th,rather than poor old Guy!
As regards the original topic,i think the Bengali idea is WRONG,WRONG,WRONG

You have it all the wrong way round. He was foremost a catholic and he had no intention of destroying either the monarchy or the ruling class, simply replacing it with a catholic version. The future of the world would hardly be affected at all had he succeeded since he would have replaced one king with a queen, who was then a small child who they hoped to mould.
For many years, centuries even, this event was an anti catholic one which should have been banned. Now that it is long forgotten that this is about catholics and doesn't offend anyone, we are banning it. You couldn't mke it up!
