Hello,

I'm looking at getting a new car. What's the best way to go about this? I was thinking of going to an auction. Is there one in or around Sheffield? Is this is a good way to get a car? My boyfriend knows a bit about cars so will check it over for me, but I just want to know what is the safest and cheapest way to buy a car. I haven't bought a car for years! Exciting! Haha.

I've got about £3,000 to £4,000 to spend and was thinking about something like a Renault Megane Cabriolet. Does anyone have any advice about these cars?

Any advice would be gratefully received!

Thanks.

in my experience Renault megane and lagoona are not good cars! everyone i know who has had one of these has had problems with the immobiliser. i have had one too and no end of trouble with it,
make sure you take it for a test drive before you buy as that can help show up any problems.

Just as winter seems to have arrived you want a Cabriolet, is that clever thinking because you’ll get one cheap or are you just daft!

Having a look on autotrader or maybe in admags and consider buying privately...you could get a newer/less mileage car for the same sort of price a dealer would charge for an older one with more mileage...You can have it checked over by mechanics and HPI etc...I have bought my last two cars privately and they have both been fantastic.

i agree entirly,if u have the cash buy private and get it checked by a proffesional, scan autotrader website and dont be afraid to travel abit,i think a 40 mile radius is acceptable if its semmingly the right car, cause i dont immagine there will be tomany megane soft tops locally
good luck

i couldnt agree more about the immobiliser problem.personally i wouldnt touch a renault just because of past experiance that friends have had,but i think with all cars today even brandnew some are good some are bad.
my renault laguna company car that i used to have had 160,000 miles on the clock and drove great,my aunt has the megane convertable for the past 6 years and has had no problems at all with hers.
if its what u really want go for it.

Car auctions are great if you have the time to get to them. One in Rotherham and also Chesterfield. If your after a Megane Coupe you might struggle a bit as they are not so common. You will save a packet buying at auction compared to private sales but set yourself a limit and don't get carried away.
Get a Parkers price guide and remember that most cars struggle to meet the prices listed and winter is a good time to by a convertable as people don't really want them in the winter.

For sporty stuff, you would check owners club websites, piston heads (http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/) and the biggie - auto trader.

I agree, I had one on a 52 plate and although a bit underpowered, it was great to drive and very reliable. Owner reviews on the What Car site tend to suggest this too.

What he said :)
I'm biased, but pistonheads has its own free forums too and you'll be able to get loads of specific advice on megane convertibles.

Renault Mégane are placed 152 out of 159 by TopGear's Survey from 76.000 readers experience. That's 7 from the bottom. Ha.

I doubt she wants a high performance car. It'll cost her about 50 times more money on fuel/servicing etc.

If you want something that's quite sporty for a girl, but still decent on insurance, tax and running costs go for:

Audi A3 - Around an R/S plate.
Peugeot 206 - Around a 52 plate
Renault Clio - Around a 52 plate
Seat Ibiza - On a Y plate

Pop up lights on the mark 1 = tres cool, back in the days before health and safety took over car design.

The mx5 at the price point and age we are talking about, is/was the only show in town for traditional open top rwd motoring**. It is therefore cool by definition. It is the polarised opposite of the shopping trollys suggested above in this thread. Not sure what mean by appeal of a fridge freezer tbh. You arnt one of those people who think BMW 3 series are the dogs are you?

**The MG came later. Things like an MR2 tbar arnt quite the same, though I'd suggest looking at these too.

I doubt she wants a high performance car.

I think that was established at the first mention of 'Renault Megane convertible' ;)
For the £3K-4K budget for a car less then 10 years old you're looking at

Mazda MX5
MG TF
Toyota MR2 Tbar
Peugeot 206CC
Fiat Barchetta (left hand drive only)

More money/older cars allowed in gets you into
Golf convertibles
BMW 3 series conv..
BMW Z3 (at a pinch)
Lotus elise (at a pinch)
any number of old classics, slow and fast.

Some might disagree: -

The MX-5 has won over 150 awards in its history,[2] including making Car and Driver magazine's annual Ten Best list seven times; Wheels Magazine 's Car of the Year for 1989 and 2005; Sports Car International's "best sports car of the 1990s" and "ten best sports cars of all time"; 2005-2006 Car of the Year Japan; and 2005 Australian Car of the Year.

aviod auctions? where did you think simon holland or you get your cars from?

GazB
24-11-2006, 12:45
Avoid auctions? Sorry but, IMO it's the best place! Most cars are ex-lease that have been serviced every 10,000 miles. Pick a car up for typically 25% cheaper than trade price!
