I used to deliver the newspapers there in 1955, I remember going in for a pint when I turned 18 & it was like dishwater, just like the rest of the John Smiths brew.

Yes, it was great in the 40s & 50s.My father was the bookmaker there.Later on it became a den for drug pushers and was closed down because of that.

We used to sit on the step outside the pub, waiting for our dad to bring us a packet of crisps out. No pub lunches in those days.

I used to go in there from time to time during the late 70s early 80s. It was a loud rowdy place but I bloody loved it in there.
From what ive heared, the locals all go to the white horse or the forty foot now? Is that right?

I remember around about 1947 or so I fetched a Jug of beer nightly for an old chap across the road (Morgan). I used to run up Galsworthy Rd get the jug filled from the Magnet beer-off and then race down so the beer didn't go flat. If the beer was flat he didn't give me the halfpenny for fetching it. I was ten at the time and wonder however did I get served?

mangnet was pulled down around 1992 i think. the story about the gang running off with the bandit is true.my dad was there that night.some close friends of my family used to practically live in there and are very well known in this area for obvious reasons and most of the stories i know of the magnet come from them.thats probably cos half the mischief was caused by them!!!!!!! not the bad stuff though.

towards the end it did become a haven for drugs, main gang used to come from manchester untill the gang from pitsmoor found out, shotguns used nobody killed though.
after it closed most people started frequenting the southey social club, that was a good place at one time but alas how times change, on a saturday and sunday you had to be in early to get a seat nowadays you can sit anywhere, they have bouncers on a sunday night and if you fancy a smoke you can always nip upstairs to the back room, not a family place anymore, i'm afraid it's days are numbered just like the old magnet.

I have just been reading all the comments on the magnet, and i have to say it brought back great memories. I use to work behind the bar in the early 80's, some of the names of the customers mentioned had me laughing. The night the T.V was stolen was so funny, but there was no mention of the the night a fella went behind the bar and tryed to steal the till. The barman (Patrick) stopped the fella but got his arm broken. Someone mentioned Jack Frost, he always use to play the pinball machine and have his pet snake around his neck. One great charector who has not had a mention was the legendary Annie Fogg, what a great lady. She was my favourite customer and had me laughing all evening, she was'nt shy at telling people what she thought of them.

I used to play around there when I was a lad in the 1930s. A fair used the ground behind it every year where I once found 3 tortoises in a tyre outside a caravan which I promply took home. I gave two away and each one was painted a different colour so we could recognise them while they were racing.

When we needed a few pennies we would climb the wall of the Magnet or the WMC and borrow some bottles which the landlord would pay us for by returning them. Apart from that we were in a pain in the neck, nearly drowned in a lime pit when they were building Parsons Cross.

We went to live at Southey Green in 1929 so I remember the Magnet Hotel very well.It had a 9 hole golf course at one time.It had a beautiful long bar made of magohany and was privately owned by a man called Bradshaw. The pub built there previoosly was called Thr Traveller's rest. When we left Southey Green in 51 Iwould have said that it was a bad choice, but visiting the area in later years,Iwould say that it was avery good choice.

Can anyone remember the "hot dog" man in the early 60s? He used to turn up in something like an A40 van, open the back doors, and there inside was the food. He had a big tub of what I think was sausage meat and onions mixed together, and used to spread it onto a breadcake. Looking back, I don't recall a lot of hygiene being practised, and if today's food police came across anything like that now they'd shut it down. However, it was quite tasty, and as far as I know he never killed anyone!

We were in the procession for Jack, a sad loss to us all. At the funeral the police went round all the bikes and nicked the owners for the most ridiculous reasons, there was in excess of 500 bikers.

"Sharrabank" or "Sharra" As in `Quick, get on the sharra, its leaving!`

I bet its spelled wrongly.

My dads family lived on Southey Green Road, throughout childhood (Ted, my father, was born 1928) his brother Albert Jenkinson lived there most of his life and never married or left home until he was in his 80's. He had to move out due to a burglary (whilst he was asleep), which was terrible and forced him to move to a flat.

Ted and Alberts brother Frank Jenkinson used to frequent the Magnet and we once joined him for a pint on Boxing Day, just before they pulled it down. It was full of travellers and we got some looks that day.:hihi: sadly both Frank and Albert are no longer with us.

I am going to show the pics to my dad as I am sure he will know someone on them.

[QUOTE=poppins;2946643]jmdee, I just Goggled sharrabang :) came up with >Coach Bus.

Just took the trouble to look it up. The word 'charabanc' is an English name given to a bus, commonly open topped in the 1920's. The word itself comes from the French, 'char' meaning coach, or buggy, and the word 'banc' meaning rows of seats. Guess it depends ont which dictionary one looks at.

The Magnet used to be a good pub, when I was a kid there used to be a tossing ring on a sunday and the spivs would pay some of the young lads to look out for the coppers and if one was around everyone would scarper like double quick. It was a pub for older people no disrespect to anyone where the young ones wernt bawlin and shouting, thats when Ted Catlin had it, he used to play for Wednesday. He retired and the looneys took over and the police were always too busy, ugh. whats new. When we were young Southey club would run a trip to Cleethorpes for the day,the only holiday most of us got .apple orange bag of crisps bottle of pop great we all wanted a pee after five miles and a ticket for fish and chips when we got there. We were supposed to queue up yerv never seen as many feights in yer life. dave"jack" frost, 1 night, him & the recently deceased frank vaughn(yes, really) were pulled over by the cops, asked their names...both being arrested when they gave em,released without charge about 2am when it was established they were telling the truth!!!

Yes this is a true story! And Jack was also known to have bitten a police dog when he was arrested I think at the Penthouse! Sad to hear that Frank has also died so young, we went to watch Wednesday all over the country together in the early 80's and knocked around getting drunk at the Magnet, Wap and Rebels. is your first name LOL by any chance, my dad always told me as a lad about his mate Lol who almost died in a lime pit up parson cross

No my name is Doug Kay my brother Geoff was a bit of a scroundral, he and his mates who were about 12 Y.O. would bully me into going to a newsagents and tell them I had put money in the fag machine and nothing came out. The girl always went out to the machine and of course no coin was stuck but she gave me a packet of 5 woodbines and a box of matches and I got the penny change.

Does anyone remember the Brown shirts marching around the terminus.

yeah ,the working mens club is still across the road .

As for the Magnet , it was a blessing in disguise ,the day they pulled it down .it was on a par with the Castle in town ,which has been closed down by the police .

The Magnet was a very apt name for the pub ,as it was a magnet for petty criminals and trouble makers.

I have spent many of summer, sat on maggie wall with a cool pint. I remember as a kid looking into the Magnet and thinking what an exciting place, when I grow up thats for me. Well I was naive then, but joking apart had many a good night in there. Even pulled a few ladies. (Yes I did say LADIES) Excellent memories, and yes these ladies will now like me, be slightly older, in their 40's. Damn the aging process. Give me back the Magnet and my youth anyday. I can but dream. As said i was naive.

well in the end it got a really bad reputation. I really myself personally think that the Southey Club, just really took all its Business. All the sensible drinkers went were beer was cheaper and entertainment better (southery club) and well lets say the less sensible ones stayed in the magnet. Thus its bad reputation. But why pulled magnet down, well when the magnet was closed down, the empty building was set on fire, thus making re-opening impossible. Hence pulled down. That's my opinion for whats it's worth.

does anyone remember the magnet pub at southey green?? closing it down......was it a good or bad choice???

From 1967 to 1970 I think we had our dinnertime there most days. That is PWD employees based at the Southey Depot.
Dinnertime was 12.00 to 12.30.The bitter served was ,and I quote,"Like nectar"

We used to play darts, a game of " Life" and the pot could each 7shillings and sixpence or I think now 37.5p. Quite well worth winning then.

I never did win,but I do remember the great times we had and the comradeship of the lads I worked with back then.

The bitter was great, just the one pint, but the Magnet was even better,a peeny or tuppence dearer...!!!!!

On Fridays they even let us bring in Fish and Chips.Try doing that today

Great pub, greta memories.

In the early 70's I worked in the building trade, I must have been 26 year old, and the Magnet pub had the finest beer in Sheffield. Those days I was working out at Dore as a building labourer and I used to catch a bus at Southey into town and then walk and catch the no 50 bus to Dore. I started work at 8 am until 5 pm and after a hard day's navvying I used to arrive at the Magnet at 6 o'clock. I used to have 2 quick pints and then sit down. Then another 2 quick pints and go home to a big cow pie.

I remember this bloke.and those sarnies.but it was outside the Meadow on Meadow Street, where I used to get them..yum yum..

Did you know that The site of the pub used to be a "Tossing Ring" (Odds & Evens) back in the twenties. The other one was on the Wybourn. They were controlled by the Mooney and Park gangs and were illegal betting rings.

I left Sheffield in 1968, but when I was younger eg 8 ish, my sister and I used to go to the off license with 2 Tizer bottles for 2 pints of mild for my grandad. Use to be poured througha brass funnell. I never saw the Tossing Ring but think the same grandad used to be part of it at some time in his past.
I always wanted to sit outside with my friend with a bottle of pop and a packet of crisps, but neither dad nor mum went in the Magnet.

What year exactly was it pulled down Jabbers, do you know?.I didnt think it was there in the 80 s.But I maybe wrong.

I came to Sheffield in 1995 and the pub was definately still there then. If my memory serves me correctly it was early 2000's (2002/03) I think it was when it was pulled down as I moved back to this side of the city around that time and it was shortly after that.

I still refer to that round about as the Magnet Roundabout and most of the bus drivers know exactly where i mean :D

I remember it as a children's nursery school, if it's the same place. This was before the new church was built, the old one being more or less a wooden hut. The bricks for the new church were piled up on the land for may years before building got underway.
